Local players earn baseball honors

Four city baseball players earned first-team all-state honors from the Kansas Baseball Coaches Association, and Free State High coach Mike Hill was named the Class 6A Coach of the Year after leading the Firebirds to their second state championship in school history.

Free State seniors Joel Spain (outfield) and Casey Hearnen (closer), along with junior Hunter Gudde (pitcher) and Lawrence High senior Michael Sinks (shortstop) were selected for the first team. FSHS senior Cooper Karlin (second base) was picked for the second team.

Among area players, Mill Valley seniors Tyler Garrison (catcher) and Zach Hannah (outfield) were first-team selections in 5A, and Ottawa senior Sam Carver (pitcher) and Baldwin seniors Ben Brungardt (outfield) and Brock Randels (utility) earned first-team honors in 4A-I.

In 4A-II, Santa Fe Trail seniors Spencer Bessette (pitcher), Weston Gloss (first base) and Cody Vandervord (outfield) were named to the first team, while Perry-Lecompton senior Bailey Pattin was picked for the second team.

Wellsville junior Andy Dougan (third base) and Oskaloosa senior Luis Rodriguez (third base) both earned first-team nods in 3A, while Wellsville seniors Jared Klamm (pitcher) and Trent Smith (second base) and junior Tony Dougan (shortstop) were second-team selections.
