40 years ago: Local air quality affected more by dust than by chemicals

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 19, 1975:

  • The quality of air in Lawrence was not perfect, but its imperfections consisted mostly of dust rather than dangerous chemicals, according to State Health Department officials and Kansas University researchers. The particulate level had been climbing steadily since 1970, said Jan Sides, chief of technical services for the Health Department’s Bureau of Air Quality and Occupational Health. Sides added that dust levels were contingent on a vast number of variables, including industrial emissions, vehicle emissions, and wind conditions which could take large amounts of dust from fields into the air.
  • The U.S. Senate’s appropriations subcommittee on transportation was preparing a measure today that reportedly would provide $10 million for projects such as the Clinton Parkway, which would get top priority. The amount matched that approved a week earlier by the House of Representatives.
