SM West slips past LHS girls

? The three-point attempts kept going up, but not many of them were able to find the bottom of the net for the Lawrence High girls basketball team Tuesday night as the Lions lost to Shawnee Mission West, 60-45.

Lawrence High was 3-of-16 from three-point range against the Vikings, including an 0-for-10 start from behind the arc.

“We need to be more patient and get a better shot,” LHS coach Jeff Dickson said. “We play versus a zone and think it’s time to bomb threes, but we need to be more selective and take better shots.”

Not only did the three-pointers not fall for LHS, but many of them went on to lead to points in transition for the Vikings (4-2). Morgan Mauck got to the bucket at will, leading the Vikings with 24 points on 12-of-23 shooting.

“(Transition defense) has been a focus for us, and we clearly need to spend more time on it,” Dickson said.

The Lions trailed by double digits for the majority of the second half, but made two runs to remain within striking distance after the break. LHS used an 8-0 run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to eight, but that was as close as the Lions would get. While the Lions fell to 1-7, Dickson did find some positives to take away from the setback. E’lease Stafford finished with 10 points, reaching double figures for the second time this season.

“E’lease is doing a great job and coming along well,” Dickson said. “I know that the sky is the limit for her. She is an amazing kid and such a hard worker.”

Olivia Lemus joined Stafford in double figures with a team-high 13 points. Lemus knocked down two of the Lions’ three-pointers.

LHS needed Stafford, Lemus and others to step up to help fulfill the void of point guard Marissa Pope. Dickson said that Pope should be back for the Lions’ next game Friday at Olathe East, and should provide a much-needed boost for his squad.

“Marissa is a tough kid and a tremendous leader for us,” Dickson said. “She is fine and shouldn’t miss any additional time.”
