LHS tennis sharp in win over Seabury

Lawrence High's Sam Allen reaches out for a return against Bishop Seabury on Friday, April 3, 2105 at LHS.

After playing in their first tournament of the year on Tuesday, Lawrence High’s boys tennis players were ready to return to the court and clean up their mistakes on Friday afternoon.

Despite a lot of wind and cold air, the Lions looked sharper during their 6-2 victory in their dual against Bishop Seabury at LHS.

The Lions won both doubles matches handily and picked up wins in singles from Elliott Abromeit, Jonathan Kinder, Michael Braman and Chanse Bowie. Abromeit and Kinder combined at No. 2 doubles for a 6-0 win, and Sam Allen and Kinder had a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

“I was pretty happy, especially coming off losing a couple matches on Tuesday,” Abromeit said. “It felt really good to get back out here and win some more.”

Abromeit moved up to No. 1 singles this season following the graduation of tennis standout Thomas Irick. Abromeit played throughout the offseason, including summer camps, in preparation for his bigger role on the team.

“I switched my grip up like a couple of months ago,” Abromeit said. “I’m still kind of working to get that under control. But it’s working really well. … I’m much more aggressive. I hit a more powerful ball now that my grip has changed. I have a much better serve, and I’m more consistent all-around.”

The Lions have a younger squad this year, but they’ve already shown solid improvement in their first few matches.

“I was very pleased,” LHS coach Chris Marshall said. “Last year we kind of struggled against them. I was pretty impressed with the way we handled the wind. We played with confidence, and we played pretty well today.”

The Seahawks opened the season Thursday against Lincoln College Prep in Kansas City and were able to get some extra matches Friday because they were outnumbered by the LHS roster.

“We actually had only started practice on March 23, when they got back from spring break,” first-year Seabury coach Andrew Konetzni said. “Just getting after it for two weeks and then being able to play in these matches — just for the experience, I think, is pretty big. Monday we’ll get into more fundamental-type of things.”

Seabury picked up a win in No. 2 singles from Noah Yoshida in a tiebreaker, 6-5 (7-3), and Thomas DiZerega won at No. 6 singles, 6-4.

“Honestly I wasn’t too happy with my performance,” Yoshida said. “I haven’t played since regionals last year besides a few practices. I don’t think I brought my ‘A’ game. I thought I could have done a little better. But overall, I was pretty satisfied considering it was my first match.”

Yoshida is expected to be one of the top players on the team, along with Jack Edmonds and Taylor Hodge, who plays with the boys because there’s no girls tennis team at Seabury.

“I think we’re pretty good this year, honestly,” Yoshida said. “We’re a bunch of juniors and sophomores. This year and also next year I’m really excited for.”

The Lions will face Bonner Springs in a dual at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at LHS.
