KU’s Student Health Services changes name to Watkins Health Services

Kansas University’s Student Health Services is now called Watkins Health Services.

The new name will match the program’s location at Watkins Memorial Health Center, 1200 Schwegler Drive. It’s also hoped that it will clear up confusion — revealed through research by KU journalism students — about who runs the program and who can use it.

“Research showed us the word ‘student’ in ‘Student Health Services’ caused some students to incorrectly think our health care providers are students, not real doctors,” Douglas Dechairo, director of Watkins Health Services, said in a news release. “Changing our name will help students understand that our medical team comprises board-certified physicians with many years of experience.”

Another reason the name change made sense is that the unit provides services to nonstudents, too, Dechairo said. Those eligible for services include KU faculty and staff, as well as spouses and domestic partners of students.

The name change was effective this week.
