FSHS gymnasts a close second

There were plenty of high-fives, wide smiles and fist pumps for Free State High’s gymnastics team on Wednesday night.

The Firebirds had a lot of high scores, and just missed out on first place in the team standings, as Olathe East topped them 107-106.85 at the Lawrence High quadrangular.

Free State senior Grace Bartle took first place on the beam (9.3), floor exercise (9.35) and all-around (36.8). Senior Haley Johnson finished fifth all-around (34.55) and senior Carrie Howland was seventh (34.15).

“I was happy that we’re starting to close in on Olathe East,” FSHS and LHS coach Brooke Kissinger said. “They’ve been about two points ahead of us at every meet we’ve gone to so to be only 0.15 away at this meet is really exciting.”

Junior Callie Hicks added a second place finish on the uneven bars (9.1).

“Every meet, I feel that we’re putting the most effort that we can, and we’re steadily increasing our scores,” said Johnson, who medaled in the vault and beam. “Everyone is just super determined to do well and it’s just great to be around.”

It was Senior Night for LHS seniors Elizabeth Harms and Heather Wisbey, and they responded with some of their best performances of the year. Harms took 12th in the floor exercise, while Wisbey was 12th on the beam with a score of 8.2.

“Actually really proud of myself. I beat my (highest) floor score for the first time this year, so that’s exciting,” said Harms, who scored a 8.1.

The Lions took last in the team scores, but kept energy high and teammates loose during their routines.

“This is probably been one of my favorite years,” Harms said. “I think all of us girls are just super close and we go into each meet just ready to have fun, no matter the outcome.”
