LHS soccer falls, 2-1, to SM East

Lawrence High’s girls soccer team lost, 2-1, to Shawnee Mission East on Monday night at LHS.

Lions goalkeeper Alex Ewy survived a flurry of shots in the second half, stopping 16 in the game, before SM East senior Victoria Sabatas scored the decisive goal by sneaking a shot on the left side of the net with just more than seven minutes left.

The Lancers took an early lead after LHS sophomore Elaine Harris was called for a foul in the box and SM East senior Jessica Young converted a penalty kick. Less than two minutes later, the Lancers were called for a handball in the box, and Lions junior Keeli Billings tied the game by making a penalty kick of her own.

“The team bought in to the system we’ve been working on,” LHS coach Justin Young said. “They’re finally starting to see the fruits of their labor, and it allowed them to compete with a good team.”

The Lions (3-5) will head on the road to face Leavenworth at 7 p.m. today.
