LHS softball sweeps SMNW

? Lawrence High’s softball team used a few big innings to sweep Shawnee Mission Northwest on Saturday afternoon at SMNW, 6-3 and 16-4.

In Game One, the Lions trailed 2-1 heading into the seventh inning before junior Morgan Byrn drilled a two-run homer. Junior Jolona Shield added a sacrifice fly, and senior Marly Carmona drove in a run with a double. Junior right-hander Megan Sumonja (2-3) struck out six in seven innings.

LHS scored early and often in the second game, with Byrn hitting an RBI single in the first and sophomore Sophie Taylor adding a two-run single in the second. The Lions compiled seven runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore Katelyn Murrish and a two-run double by Audrina Hidalgo. In the sixth inning, Taylor brought in two more runs with a single, and the game ended in the bottom half of the inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Shield, a lefty, improved to 5-0 with the win in Game Two, allowing just two earned runs and striking out two.

The Lions (7-3) will play Olathe Northwest and Olathe North, starting at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
