3 schools to mark Walk to School Day

Three elementary schools in the Lawrence school district are participating in International Walk to School Day, with parents, teachers and others working to encourage and enable children to get to class under their own power.

Scheduled events Wednesday:

• At Langston Hughes School, 1101 George Williams Way, teachers will fan out across the western Lawrence neighborhood, beginning at 8 a.m., to help guide and support children walking to school with their parents. Walkers will receive graham crackers once they arrive at school.

• At New York School, 936 N.Y., teachers and Principal Nancy DeGarmo will meet students and parents at 7:15 a.m. at 15th Street and Haskell Avenue, the former site for East Heights School, to begin the walk along the Burroughs Creek Trail and on to school, where a complimentary breakfast of muffins, yogurt and juice awaits. Bike-safety checks also will be provided at the school’s bike racks, sponsored by Sunflower Outdoor & Bike and Lawrence Breakfast Optimists.

• At Sunset Hill School, 901 Schwarz Road, students are encouraged to wear Sunset Hill T-shirts or sweatshirts as they join parents and teachers along one of five established routes to school, with start times ranging from 7:05 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.; muffins and juice will be available at school for all walkers.
