First Bell: Spring Powwow is Saturday at LHS; Junior High naming decisions expected April 11; Kindergarten Roundup schedule available in Lawrence public schools

A few education-oriented items from around the area and beyond:

The public is invited to attend and enjoy the Lawrence High Native American Club’s Spring Powwow, set for this Saturday in the gym at the school, 1901 La.

Schedule for the annual event:

• 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

• break

• 7 p.m. to completion.

“Last year we welcomed more than 700 spectators, dancers and singers,” said Marlene Bad Warrior, a bookkeeper at Lawrence High School and the club’s sponsor. “We hope to have just as many this year.”

The event is free, and spectators are welcome to take photos of dancers. A vendor will be selling Indian tacos and fry bread.

The Lawrence school board will be scheduled to determine later this month what names each of the Lawrence school district’s four junior high schools will have for the next school year, as the buildings reopen as middle schools.

The issue will be on the board’s agenda for April 11, when the board meets at 7 p.m. at district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive.

Back on Jan. 13, the administrators had recommended — with support from the principals at each of the four schools — to rename the schools as follows:

• Central Junior High School would become Central Middle School.

• South Junior High School would become South Middle School.

• Southwest Junior High School would become Southwest Middle School.

• West Junior High School would become West Middle School.

But that night, members of the Lawrence school board, on a 4-3 vote, decided to pursue different names. Those seeking entirely new names were Mary Loveland, Marlene Merrill, Rich Minder and Vanessa Sanburn.

The board directed administrators to form committees at each school to recommend names, provided the names would include “Middle School” instead of “Junior High School.”

Turns out only one school’s committee — Central’s — is recommending a change from the Jan. 11 recommendation. Central’s committee supports a change that would recognize that Central actually is located inside the former Liberty Memorial High School, built in 1922 and named in honor of the 19 Lawrence High School students and alumni who died in World War I.

Central’s committee recommended that “Central and Liberty should be combined,” and forwarded three options for consideration by the board:

• Central Liberty Middle School.

• Liberty Central Middle School.

• Central Middle School, Liberty Memorial Building.

The Lawrence school district has released its Kindergarten Roundup schedule for the 2011-2012 school year.

Parents are encouraged to call an incoming student’s school “for an appointment and to add their address to the school’s mailing list to receive more information,” said Julie Boyle, the district’s communications director.

The first event is April 13 at Pinckney School and the last is a two-day affair at Hillcrest School.
