David Livingood

Celebration of life services for David Harlan Livingood, 71, of Lawrence, KS, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2024, First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence. He died on November 15th, 2024 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka after a short battle with lymphoma.

Dave was born September 1, 1953 at the University of Kansas hospital, the son of Marilyn Rosenau Livingood and Harry Harlan Livingood. His love for music and his Christian faith began at a young age with his family's active involvement with Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church. Dave followed in his father's footsteps, playing the trombone in the marching band in junior high and at Shawnee Mission West high school where he graduated in 1971.

David went on to attend Kansas State University from 1971-1977 where he was a drum major in the marching band and graduated with a degree in architecture. It was at KSU in 1974 where he met the love of his life, Peg Granberry, when she fell in love with his blue-eyed puppy. They were married June 5th, 1976.

After graduation they moved to Topeka where Dave began working for HTK Architects. They spent their time in Topeka rebuilding an old house on MacVicar (to include passive solar), actively serving at Trinity Presbyterian Church, and were founding members of the Flamingos. They were blessed with their two daughters during their time in Topeka, Kimberly in 1986 and Jennifer in 1990.

In 1986, Dave began work at PKG Design Group and the family moved to Lawrence in 1992. The firm reorganized over the years, with Dave serving as a principal of GLPM Architects and later with TreanorHL when GLPM was acquired in 2008. He served as the Principal in Charge for scores of projects for church facilities, education, and science and technology buildings. His work included many projects at KU, including expansions for the School of Engineering, reconstruction of Budig Hall, and construction of the School of Pharmacy, and science and technology projects at the University of Texas Austin. Dave was involved with many significant projects within Kansas communities, including St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (Leawood), Midland Hospice House (Topeka), and Free State High School (Lawrence). He ‘officially’ retired from Treanor in 2020. Those who worked with Dave held him in high esteem for his kindness, integrity and willingness to share his knowledge. His family has been touched by the many younger architects he mentored who visited him in the hospital.

Dave was a cherished member of the Lawrence community, where he dedicated his time and talents to making a difference. He served on the boards of the Lawrence School District's Business Education Partnership, the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and AIA Kansas, consistently working to strengthen local connections and opportunities. A long-standing member of First Presbyterian Church, Dave served faithfully in numerous roles as an elder, youth leader, Sunday School and confirmation teacher and served on the church's technology support team, Stephen Ministry program and many mission trips. He always found joy in giving back. Among his most treasured experiences were the PDA mission trips with the Presbytery of Northern Kansas, where he lent his hands and heart to hurricane relief efforts in southern Louisiana.

Dave's greatest joy in life was his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he poured his heart into every role he held. He attended many high school choir and band concerts and supported his kids' interests as a soccer coach, FFA parent sponsor, horse show dad, and 4-H father and grandfather. Dave was a steadfast supporter and mentor, always encouraging hard work and celebrating every accomplishment. His dedication, love, and unwavering presence made a lasting impact on his family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years Peg (Margaret) Livingood; daughters Kimberly Livingood Noble (Grant Noble) of Olathe, KS and Jennifer Livingood (Brent Sullivan) of Riley, KS; four granddaughters, Callie Livingood, Maeley Noble, and Nora and Lindy Sullivan; three sisters, Chris McCoy (Mike), Stephanie Wind, and Amy Rogers (David); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Marilyn and Harlan Livingood, brother-in-law Peter Wind, and niece Kate Rogers.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials in his name to one of the following:

– Lawrence Schools Foundation (for special education and autism resources) or Douglas County 4-H Foundation, to support granddaughter Callie.

– Scholarships for the KSU Marching Band or the KSU College of Architecture.

– Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) program through the PCUSA.
