Memorial services for Marjorie Ruth Hill Smith, 99, Lawrence, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Cherry Mound Cemetery in Westphalia, KS. Marjorie passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at the Presbyterian Manor where she had lived since 2005.

Marjorie was born on August 28, 1922, in Westphalia, the daughter of Mark D. and Nellie M. (Stephenson) Hill. She lived on the family farm in the Cherry Mound community, went to elementary school in the one room school at Cherry Mound, then to Westphalia High. She returned to the Cherry Mound School as its teacher for two years.

Marjorie married Andrew Murry Smith on September 23, 1945, in Chanute, KS, and they moved to Lawrence shortly after. She was a Trust Officer for First National Bank for 27 years until she retired. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and became very active in the Lawrence Pilot Club in retirement. When she and Murry moved to Lawrence, she was not in any way a sports fan, but she grew to be as faithful a Jayhawk as there is.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, by her sister, Treva R. Cole, and by her husband Murry. Survivors include her son, David Hill (Robyn) Smith, granddaughter Emily (Nate) Kalberer, granddaughter Maggie Smith, and one great-grandson, Caden Kalberer.

Memorial contributions may be made in Marjorie's name to First Presbyterian Church or The Good Samaritan Fund at Presbyterian Manor and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
