Roene Schonberg

Funeral services for Roene Jeanette Schonberg, 97, Lawrence, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2021 at the Lawrence Bible Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. She died Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Roene was born on October 12, 1923 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Adolph and Edith (Loren) Skoglund. She lived in Lawrence since 1981. Prior to that, she lived in Minnesota and California.

Roene was a homemaker who's untiring and selfless commitment to her husband and children reflected her deep conviction to serve in Jesus' footsteps. Her pantry and freezer bulged with canned and frozen produce from her garden for the long Minnesota winters. With children now grown her service reached a broader circle with home-made quilts for grandchildren, friends and those in need. Her calendar notes every birthday of her many descendants. Eventually the cards were supplemented by emails.

Lawrence Bible Chapel was her local fellowship for many years where she participated wholeheartedly in worship, Bible study, and service to others. Her kindness and gentleness touched many lives and she was a friend and mother to many. Roene loved the outdoors and was fascinated with God's creation, speaking of it often.

She married Donald M. Schonberg on October 5, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN. He preceded her in death on March 2, 2011.

Survivors include one daughter, Rebekah (husband, Chris)Leason of Wichita, KS; four sons, David (wife, Jean) Schonberg of Alexandria, MN; Steven (wife, Deborah) Schonberg of Essex Junction, VT; Mark (wife, Ramona) Schonberg of Lawrence, KS; Philip (wife, Kay) Schonberg of Eudora, KS; twenty-four grandchildren, seventy-two great grandchildren and fourteen great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Morgan (December 8, 1985) and by her sister Marion Johnson.

The family will greet friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at the Warren McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Roene requested that memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to Christian Missions in Many Lands. These may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
