Marcella was born April 6, 1929 at the Brecheisen homestead near Clearfield, Kansas. She was born to Edith Louise (Meuffels) and Philip Andrew Brecheisen. She was the oldest of five children being raised with her four brothers, Marvin, Dale, Jay Dee, and Philip. She received her elementary education at Pleasant Oak #45. She attended Baldwin High School graduating in the class of 1946. Shortly after graduation, Marcella married Alois (Bud) Joseph Madl on July 9, 1946 at Eudora, Kansas. They purchased a farm in rural Douglas County moving to the farm on July 25, 1946. They celebrated 66 years of marriage before Bud’s passing in 2012. During their time on the farm they had a dairy for 40 years, raised field crops, and hay for the cattle. Bud milked the cows and Marcella managed the chickens for meat and egg production. At one point she had over 600 chickens roaming the pasture and the farm made the newspaper. It became known as the Madl Chicken Farm. Marcella sold her fresh eggs and chickens and milk on a route to Baldwin City and Kansas City as well. She always gave special service, even teaching the young housewives how to cut up the fresh chickens she delivered to their home. Marcella and Bud attended Annunciation Catholic Church and the Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora. She was a member of the Altar Society and was well known for the pies she brought for the bake sales and the Eudora Fair. She often taught the religious education classes and enjoyed all the children. Marcella enjoyed music, singing, playing the piano, and the organ. She always sang in the choir. She began in the Clearfield United Methodist Church in her youth. She continued in both Catholic churches. When she began singing in the Catholic churches, mass was in the Latin language. The priest was known to pray that Marcella’s home duties would not keep her away from the funeral mass where she would sing the hymns and Latin responses. Marcella and her organist, Ethel Butell, were in high demand as they would travel to area churches to sing at weddings and funerals. Following the marriage of her fifth daughter, Marcella entered the School of Cosmetology graduating in 1981. She worked briefly at Whitney’s Creative Hair Designs in Baldwin City. Later she worked at Presbyterian Manor in the hair salon in Lawrence, Kansas for over 20 years. Marcella is survived by her five daughters; Phylis and husband Dale Schwarz, Velma and husband Ralph Rippetoe, Betty and husband Roger Tuckel, Mary and husband David Moore, and Edith Willis. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and 23 greatgrandchildren. In addition, she is survived by two of her brothers, Jay Dee and Philip, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Marvin and Dale, and one grandson, Cassidy Moore. The family suggests memorials in her name to Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS. or the Douglas County VNA and Hospice, c/o LambRoberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 64, Baldwin City, Kansas 66006.
