Not long ago, a fine CJA fellow Dave Klamet posted a blog listing the LJW users with the most comments. Everyone had fun reading and commenting about it. Some wished they had been on the list, some may have been glad they were not. Some noticed the deficiencies of statistics on users, noting that many of the more prolific users had been removed from the system. The popular term for that is disappeareded (ed) which no word processor will be happy with. Who used that term first we wonder, is that an LJW original? One thing is clear, while you would think nobody likes being disappeareded, nobody, we are certain some users relish it and come back for more.

Seeing the questions and having a few of our own, this prompted a few of my co-workers who work with numbers to get together and crunch some. We are the Statguys. We wanted to look at the users in another way. Something simple that we thought would be entertaining and relevant to the everyday reader. What started in one direction, sheer intellectual pleasure steered to become more involved as we found how easy it was to add more users with simple clicks and noticed names that should not be neglected. Everyone wants to be noticed.

However the list is not complete. That would be too enormous for our goals here. The users on the list were first chosen from Mr. Klamet's fun blog and thread. Then they were added from recent comments posted, some old famous threads, and randomly searched articles from the past. Knowing many of the regular student readers are out of town the list will be missing names.

We considered waiting until mid fall, but then decided the faithful summer readers deserved a reward for sticking it out. We may do this again when the students are in town.

Let us explain a bit about stats and some of the ways they fail too. The previous blog showed total comments. Some of the users with the most have been signed up for a very long time so of course it's reasonable that if they read and comment daily they are likely to have a lot of comments. Some newer people were also up there. Perhaps the old timers should get a gold watch don't you think? Loyal, staying in the game. A boss or coach would like that, yet some choose to put that down as a bad thing.

We thought we would bring to light the comments in another way, and show how things can change. Or not change.

We decided in the end to list how many comments users average by day based on their membership.

Of course there are holes all over this. Some can sign up and talk a lot, stop, come back, stop. Some talk all the time. Results would depend on what day they were run. Of course it's flawed. But all ways of looking at a long term list of total comments would suggest breaking it down day by day, or following trends, and that takes big grant money! We opted for simple.

About Users:

The users who have been signed up for a long time and have a lot of comments. These users can post a heck of a lot of comments for days and days, or quit posting for a time and not affect their average of how many posts per day.

Fewer Year Users

These users oscillations show up in their daily rate fairly quickly but not a lot, especially if some article or blog is a hot one for them.

New Users

If they sign on and are prolific, they shoot to the top numbers right away. And then perhaps die down if they lose interest. Look for recently disappeareded's to look like this at first.

Top Ten People that are "Movers" juggle spots.

Older ones stay about the same no matter what they do, talk or stay silent. Like just_another_bozo, Marion, Multidisciplinary. Many in the top 20 are people who have been disappeareded and are back. With shorter years, their numbers oscillate and they juggle position with others, but not much unless they shut up for a few days such as one well know users of many names.

We included some names in a different way or that by the time we post this may have been disappeared, some are that antagonistic. But we didn't want the history to be forgotten. One poster, Jonas aka jonas_opines is a long time user who for some reason used two names and claimed them on Klamet's blog so we chose to add them together as total comments and used the oldest date, this he could be ranked accordingly. Similarly with a few others that are public that we know about. Of course we don't know all or they have not gone public. We don't intend to cause a row by pointing fingers.

Frankly, we fell off our chairs laughing several times the first night we worked on this one weekend. We were addicted. Some of the names we had never noticed nor suspected would be in the top ten. Who are you people and where do you comment?

We ran stats on about 200 users as we gathered information not knowing all the names. While most are not record setters, it seemed more fun to include them along with the others. If you are not on the list and would like us to do the simple calcs for you, don't be embarrassed. Just send us a pm and we'll be glad to hit the buttons to look on the list or even run a fresh calculation for that day. It's really that easy as our computers are now set up for it and we're really doing it to entertain you (and us also, obviously.) Some shortened names have been used to make the chart more readable.

Hold on to your helmets, it's going to be a big one! Three cheers to RoeDapple for being so honorable and letting us know he had also been another name that he had to change due to internet issues if I understand it correctly. One of us then remembered knowing that back at the time, and we had the bndair name lower down on the list but didn't think of it. He may not be the king of the list any longer, but he may be the best sport of the bunch.

Oh, notajayhawk. We noted as we worked that your wish came true..you daily number went down a bit. Be happy. However with the way the others changed, well, sorry about that fella, can't win 'em all. You can see how things change rapidly by comparing the previous lists we posted in the first comments to this current list.
