At least they're smart enough to know you don't spend money you don't have when times are tough and you can't keep up with your bills. The sign maker is smarter than those asking for the library expansion.

Typing error, next to last line of previous post. Should read: our teachers' well being.

I will vote no to expand the library and my 'no' is exactly for the reason shown in the picture here, but it is a different reason than the o.p. offers. Expanding the library is a very worthwhile endeaver and one which I strongly support for community... though I feel strongly 'now' is not the time. I do realize the 'cost' to expand at this time may indeed be lower because of the economy as opposed to when our economy is booming. Were Lawrence Douglas Cnty to have been 'saving funds' for just such a time, when product and labor costs may be the lowest, I would say Yes. But we haven't. Because funds are not in place and will need to be acquired I must definitely say No at this time.

As demonstrated in o.p.'s picture, at this time in our economy our funds should go where they are most needed.... to the teachers whose work and efforts effect the life blood of our society. To have a healthy society we must have well educated citizens. Libraries are proven to be an important part in society and I clearly see the relevance. However, it is the education of society that is paramount... and it is the teachers who educate. In this economy, with the school closings and larger classes we will have more stress on our teachers' and stress reduces well being and therefore the longterm ability to teach at optimum. Sometimes even at all. Sending our societal educators elsewhere and/or making them quit as educators. We will attract fewer quality new teachers and they will not stay long. We will be less educated as a society. A new library holds fewer needs for us than our teachers' well bing, and by extension, our well being.

Just as the included picture demonstrates.
