Art, food and other stuff spotted this week on the Web. But mostly art and food.
Winds in Big Apple
The KU Wind Ensemble, in a much-anticipated performance, premiered a 9/11-inspired large-scale, narrative work called “In the Shadow of No Towers” Tuesday night at Carnegie Hall in New York City. We heard from a (very excited) reader that The Times might be reviewing the performance. That didn’t happen, as far as I can find (UPDATE: The Times later published a review, which you can read about here.), but a New York City blog called Feast of Music had a review. Feast of Music — clearly skeptical of college kids on the renowned stage — was impressed. A snip:
Whenever a student or other amateur ensemble rents out Carnegie Hall, most seasoned New Yorkers groan and look the other way. ... Every now and again, however, a jewel can be found among this wasteland of student recitals and overdressed soloists. Case in point: last night's concert by the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble. Yes, Dorothy, the Jayhawks are known for more than just basketball.
There’s an encore performance planned Tuesday here in Lawrence, which you can see for free — if there’s any tickets left.
Every once in a while Kansas City media treks to Lawrence to review one of our restaurants. Last week The Pitch reviewed Intorno — and quite favorably. We featured the restaurant shortly after it opened, and ordered their crab cakes for the photo shoot. I’m with Charles 100 percent on these — they’re extra-meaty, and fantastic.
KU Dining’s Crunchy Chicken Wrap made the Elite Eight but seems to be slipping behind some chili/spaghetti thing called “The Marquette” in the Cooking Channel’s Best College Eats Bracket Battle. Our KU reporter Matt Erickson has been updating the face-off on his blog ... even though, as he puts it, "It feels a bit funny, filing updates for you all on how many people are clicking on a 'vote' button for a chicken wrap as part of a cable-channel promotion, but all the evidence out there suggests a lot of you are into it, so I'm going to continue."
It's Friday, the Final Friday. Here's Lawrence.com's monthly Final Fridays preview, a brief writeup about a fun new thing Wonder Fair's doing to celebrate its anniversary, and the official Final Fridays blog, with a list of everything to see and do. Chip doesn't think anyone will be hitting Final Fridays instead of watching the game, but Larryville Chronicles assures us they will and offers this preview, as well.
Best of Lawrence
It's that time! The annual Best of Lawrence competition kicked off this week, with official voting on Lawrence.com. Meanwhile, an unofficial Best Burger battle seems to be under way on our Facebook page, where we've got people plugging Pachamamas, West Coast Saloon, and pretty much everything in between.
