Treasure Hunt # 6 - FOUND by Anagram
Congratulations to Anagram. . .
who found Abigail's treasure in Oak Hill Cemetery. Please join me in congratulating Anagram .
The story, riddle and clues are shown below
Abigail Addison crafted her role perfectly. She arrived in Lawrence as a qualified piano teacher and quickly established a reputation of part community pillar and part spinster. It was a reputation that would serve her well as a cover for the murder she was about to commit, and for a past of several suitors and husbands who met untimely and unusual deaths. And, of course, it didn't detract from the formula that she was devilishly attractive.
In 1865, Lawrence was just another frontier town and a ripe challenge to lure another husband into a tragic death for profit. Abigail had a system and she wasn’t about to set it aside for any town of liberal yahoos. But it was the year the University of Kansas began its charter and the community began to grow beyond its Abolitionist roots into a wide-spread bastion of liberal philosophy and philanthropy.
Abigail remained confident, however, but she hadn’t planned on dealing with a community of people who were both kind and thoughtful. In her experience, you could find the former in Iowa and the latter in New York, but to find both in one community. No. That was a grave anomaly to be remedied.
Abigail went the comfortable route, though, and gradually found a stalwart Lawrencian who admired her music and caring for children. He was prime for the picking. It wasn’t long before he fell in love and needed her to complete his being.
But she underestimated the Lawrencian. He knowingly let her steal money from him freely, but when she tried to poison his coffee with arsenic he horse whipped her and formed a local band of people who scurried her out of town.
She left behind a small cache of valuable coins, which she hid in a remote place.
Unfortunately, after being run out of town, she had no time to recover her small treasure.
Now it’s your turn to find to find Abigail’s treasure.

David, that'a great story. I'm awaiting the novel about Abigail now.

I'm betting when the movie comes out it will star Anjolina Jolie, but they will change the ending.
Great story.

Congrat to Anagram and I would very much like to know how he reasoned this out.
liggyon (David Lignell) says…
Irish,
Here's an excerpt on anagram's reasoning from an email sent to me:
"My reasoning: The words "stone" and "rest" in the riddle (and "grave" in the story) made me think of cemeteries. Also, I wondered what there were 150 of in Lawrence, so I did some searching. There are 150 tribes represented at Haskell and 150 citizens killed in Quantrill's raid. The latter supported the cemetery theory, I found the Quantrill raid monument, and the rest follows."

I guess I need to start hanging out in more cemetaries.

Jonas,
If you haven't been to Oak Hill in awhile, it really is beautiful and interesting. Lot's a key locals buried there, too.
Irish (Leslie Swearingen) says…
Now that I know that, it all seems so simple.
Rushfan (anonymous) says…
Congrats Anagram! I had thought of cemetaries as well, based on some of the same things that you picked up on. Instead of being a good pirate and following through, I talked myself out of it! Good job and very quickly done! See you in the pub!

Thanks, you scurvy dogs. This hunt was an absolute hoot. I'd never been to Oak Hill Cemetery before. It's quite beautiful, you should go for a morning stroll there sometime.
