Favorite Holiday Recipes
I baked molasses cookies from an old tattered recipe card in my mom's handwriting over the weekend. My grandchildren were there to help me "sample" them and I thought about my own childhood and the wonderful smells that emanated from my mom's kitchen, especially around the holidays.
What's your favorite holiday recipe? Here's one of mine.
Molasses Cookies
2/3 shortening
1 cup of sugar
1 egg
¼ cup of molasses
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp baking soda
Mix shortening and sugar with mixer. Add egg and mix. Add molasses and mix. Mix in dry ingredients. Cover and put in refrigerator to chill at least ½ hour. Form walnut sized balls and roll in sugar. Use the bottom of a drinking glass to flatten balls. Bake at 375 degrees for 5-8 minutes. When I take the cookie sheet from the oven, I tap the cookie sheet on the stove to flatten the cookies, remove from cookie sheet immediately with a spatula.

I made these once (a friend made these for a party and gave me her recipe). This is a recipe I found on the internet.

Cathedral Cookies
1/2 c. butter
1 pkg. (12 oz.) chocolate chips
2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. nuts, chopped
6 c. miniature marshmallows, colored
Melt butter. Add chocolate chips and cool. Add vanilla, nuts, and marshmallows. Mix together. Roll 1 1/2 to 2 inch in thickness inside wax paper. Chill in wax paper. Slice 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
I did find some recipes that also added coconut, but I don't remember that being in the ones my friend made.

Roman832,
Thanks! I was just talking about this recipe with a high school friend, but don't have the recipe. We made them in home economics back in the late 60's and 70's. They really look cool when you slice them! Maybe I'll try them, my grandchildren will think it is fun. I don't the ones we made in home economics had coconut either.
