Free State likely earned a high seed in the state playoffs and will host the opening round. LHS (7-2) will play its first-round playoff game on the road.

Original post 6:03 p.m.

If you don’t know what’s at stake tonight on the local high school football scene, then you just haven’t been paying attention.

In a little less than an hour, 7-1 Lawrence High will play host to 7-1 Free State in what many have called the most meaningful city showdown since the split brought two high schools to Lawrence in 1997.

There have been big games, big beatdowns and big moments in the 15 games (Free State leads the all-time series 8-7) that preceded tonight’s. But none of those match-ups featured two teams with as much talent as the two we’ll see tonight.

Both are ranked in the Top 5 of the Class 6A football polls — Free State second and LHS fifth — and both are vying for a district champioinship trophy to add to their trophy case. Sure, the trophy would be nice, but both teams have much bigger goals than a district title and the winner could be in line for the top seed in the 6A state playoffs.

The Lions are riding a seven-game winning streak and feature an explosive spread-style offense led by quarterback Brad Strauss and a host of sure-handed and lightning quick receivers. LHS’s only loss came in the opener against Shawnee Mission West

Free State enters on a five-game winning streak and is led by a nasty defense and an offense that’s full of playmakers and just as tough. Free State’s lone loss came at home on Sept. 14 to Olathe South.

Coincidentally, the Firebirds beat the one team that topped LHS and the Lions knocked off O-South.

School officials are expecting a record crowd and LHS has placed additional bleachers in the north end zone for the big game.

In case you couldn’t make it to the game or are just looking for something to do to kill the time while you wait for kickoff, here’s a look back at our coverage from one of the most-hyped week’s of high school football in city history.

In case you missed it, be sure to check out our Monday-Night-Football-style video of the starting lineups at the top of the page.

We’ll be posting scoring updates after every quarter and throughout the game, so be sure to check back often if you’re trying to track this thing from anywhere other than 19th and Louisiana.

Tom Keegan kicked it all off with a look at how the “little guys” on both sides could play a big role in tonight’s outcome.

Benton Smith set the scene for what’s at stake with this piece.

The big news Wednesday was that LHS joined Free State in the Top 5 of the Class 6A football rankings.

Here’s Tom Keegan’s look at high-energy anchor Kharon Brown, a senior at LHS.

Benton Smith added this look at Free State force Cody Stanclift.

Here’s Benton Smith’s story on LHS senior Will Thompson.

And there was also this story on Free State linebacker Corban Schmidt.

Tom Keegan wrote this gem about brothers who play for opposite teams.

And, of course, today’s story on the two players that make these offenses go, LHS quarterback Brad Strauss and Free State QB Kyle McFarland.
