Backyard Maple Tapping
We may be nearing the end of tapping season for this spring, but perhaps these photos will inspire a few people to tap next year. Our family tapped a sugar maple in our backyard, our first tapping experience. We found tapping easy and fun, and a great way to connect with the natural world.A couple useful websites:http://biology.clc.uc.edu/fankhauser/Buds_and_Bark/tapping_sugar_maple_index.htmlhttp://www.umext.maine.edu/onlinepubs/PDFpubs/7036.pdf

Gallon jug to collect sap.
Processing the sap collected in early February yields one cup of syrup. More syrup to come.
Five-year-old Simon says this is the sweetest and stickiest syrup he's ever had!

Great post, Sandy. For some reason it never crossed my mind that we could do that in our area. Of course we didn't have maple trees in western Kansas! :)
Sounds like a lot of fun and a tasty reward.
