The Incredible Shrinking House

When my husband first bought our house he jokes that he picked it out because he could throw a ball for his dog from one end to the other. It’s a great starter home; it has a very open layout and a great big back yard. He acquired a new dog and a new girlfriend (me) shortly after his big purchase but there was still plenty of space.

After moving in I started convincing him we needed more furniture….2 recliners and an entertainment center (decor de bachelor) weren’t going to cut it anymore. So we got furniture. We started to decorate.

Did I mention I brought with me another big dog?

Then came the baby….and the baby furniture….and the baby clothes…etc, etc, etc. No problem. We still had a room for him, a room for us, and an office! Another year later…another baby. This time Baby is a “she” not a “he” so we also began to accumulate a new set of baby “must haves” (we didn’t learn the first time).

We adjusted.

Along comes baby #3 (we still weren’t learning). Another boy. We decided to move. I launched into full swing morning sickness and the housing market tanked….we swore off the moving for a “later date”.

In case you weren’t paying attention, the count in our little home is now: 3 large breed dogs, 2 adults, 1 overly supplied pre-schooler, 1 well dressed toddler and 1 baby with lots of hand me downs (we did learn SOMETHING).

Now we have a problem. Toys everywhere. “Stuff” everywhere the toys aren’t. We are bursting at the seams! This house is SHRINKING!!

Suddenly those 2 recliners don’t seem so bad. (Don’t tell my husband he might have been right.) Now I’m on a mission to pare down and make us fit at least a little bit better in this very “cozy” house. The sales at Target this week look like they might help steer me on the right track for this mission.

I’m always packing away clothes in storage bins to use later or hand down. I can usually find them on sale…this week Target has storage containers on sale for $6.99 (20gal). We are moving the kids into one room and making the 3rd room into a toy room. I really like the cube storage at Target for tucking away books and toys so they at least appear to be more organized! These are on sale again this week for $8.99….I’m hoping to grab a few to add to our collection.

Finally…we have decided it is time to retire our full scale entertainment center from the living room. The pride and joy of my husband’s first “Post-college” purchases…is being set aside for another day…a bigger house. Our living room will feel so much less claustrophobic with that gone. We’ve been looking at smaller television stands like the one in Target’s ad this week for $199.

This week there are two inserts in your Sunday paper. If you are looking for printable coupons and deals to supplement these, please feel free to stop over at SuperJenn and check them out!
