To Those in Combat Zones At Christmas

I wish you a peaceful, uneventful Christmas.

I'm not sure "Merry Christmas" is appropriate because I know from experience it's difficult to feel merry when you are thousands of miles from home and there are people outside the perimeter who would like to kill you. It's more difficult for many of you than it was for me because many of you are away from your spouses and children as well as being away from your parents and siblings.

I spent Christmas 1969 at Landing Zone English just north of Bong Son, South Vietnam. I hope your Christmas will be comparable to mine.

I worked in the army post office serving the 173rd Airborne Brigade. After weeks of abnormally large amounts of mail we had a day off with no mail coming in. We had had help with the extra mail which included a large number of small artificial Christmas trees. Several lucky men from various infantry units had been given the opportunity to spend their last couple of months in Vietnam sorting mail instead of looking for Charlie.

The weather was sunny but without the heat and humidity of summer. Winter days in that part of Vietnam were often cloudy and sometimes rainy. That night some of the men on guard duty got a little carried away and started popping red and green flares until someone decided to sound the siren for a red alert. The enemy had agreed to a truce, primarily so he could resupply his units.

Of course not all Christmases in Vietnam were pleasant. For some other memories, songs, etc. see the site started by Mary Garvey in 1994.

I hope your Christmas isn't anything like my dad's wartime Christmas. He was a truck driver in Patton's army. His unit was outside of the area the Germans occupied in the Battle of the Bulge, but he and his brother earned Bronze Stars by disobeying orders and taking some supplies through German lines. When he talked about it later he felt he hadn't done anything special. He had simply shown the officers that they were wrong about the danger.

American soldiers, sailors and Marines have at times been spending their Christmases in harm's way since the American Revolution. Members of the Air Force joined them 60 years ago.

The American army's first major victory came on Christmas, 1776, when General George Washington led his army across the Delaware River to defeat the Hessians at Trenton, N.J. The next Christmas was rough because of the frigid weather at their encampment at Valley Forge.

Perhaps the most remarkable wartime Christmas occurred in 1914 in World War 1 when English. German and French troops ignored the wishes of higher officers and declared an informal truce and talked and sang with each other before returning to the war.

I wish you could all be home for Christmas, but that isn't possible. You are participating in a unique conflict. Our previous wars were against other nations including the wars against the Cherokee, etc Even our Civil War was a war involving a group of states acting like another nation.

In the War on Terror your enemy is more like an oversized criminal gang armed with military weapons. Their primary focus is on killing people. They claim to have a religious motive, but they will kill their fellow Muslims just as readily as they will kill us "infidels". They would like to take over a country, but that isn't their primary goal.

Many of them want to provoke a war between Muslims and the rest of the world. They want to get others to blame all Muslims for their actions and attack Muslims who aren't involved in the violence.

Your job is to keep them from getting a country to use as a base of operations. In Vietnam we weren't always sure which of the Vietnamese were friendly and which were not. As the recent at Ft. Hood indicates, you cannot even be sure of your own comrades.

Eliminating all terrorists probably isn't possible, but you can minimize their opportunities to conduct mass murders.

Is Western Society Doomed?

It is becoming increasingly clear that in western society the inmates are running the asylum. The idiot elite that holds power in most western nations have demonstrated their insanity by accepting the outright lie that the essential atmospheric gas carbon dioxide is a undesirable pollutant that needs to be regulated.

The scam begun by the crooked Enron corporation in the 1990's falsely claims that very slight increases in CO2 would substantially raise air temperatures. Enron, and its successors, hoped to profit from trading carbon credits like it had profited from trading credits in sulfur dioxide, a byproduct of coal combustion. http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fpcomment/archive/2009/05/29/lawrence-solomon-enron-s-other-secret.aspx

The scientific fact is air temperatures would rise substantially if atmospheric CO2 were to decline to a point insufficient to support plant life. Areas of bare ground are significantly hotter than comparably located plant covered ground because bare ground converts the solar radiation to heat.

CO2 is essential to functioning of the biosphere. Plants store solar radiation by converting atmospheric CO2 to complex carbon molecules instead of converting it to heat. The energy is stored in the form of the electron bonds that hold the molecules together. Plants also reflect solar radiation back into space, further reducing solar heating. http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/1625289-CO2-Is-Essential-to-Biosphere

Those who talk about global warming have failed to provide any evidence of significant temperature change. They claim (depending on the source) only about a 0.5 - 0.7 C increase in temperature which is only a 0.23% change [Note: per cent changes are calculated using the Kelvin scale because of the arbitrary zero point of the Celsius scale - the only thing you can have less than nothing of is money.]

Such a small change could easily be the result of changes in equipment or the characteristics of measuring sites.

The claim about CO2 causing warming by trapping IR ignores the fact that physicist R. W. Wood demonstrated in a 1909 experiment that trapping IR did not heat greenhouses as many in the 19th Century had believed and thus the process could not heat the atmosphere either. http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/1181679-Earths-Energy-System

Those who talk of magical greenhouse gases have no understanding of the complexity of earth's energy system. http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/1181679-Earths-Energy-System

Earth gets virtually all of its heat from the sun and changes in heating are most likely caused by variations in solar output than human activity. If human activity is affecting temperature the most likely mechanism would be the heat generated by human activity or changes in the thermal characteristics of the landscape.

Except in tropical areas the human body is hotter than the air most of the time. Human activities such as cooking and operation of mechanical devices generates additional heat. Pavement produces more heat than plant covered areas.

Any Western leaders who think they can benefit from the adverse economic consequences of restrictions on CO2 emissions should be taken to the Happy Home by those nice young men in their clean white coats.

Western leaders who think an economic calamity can benefit them are living in the wrong century. Any economic collapse in the West would speed up the process of shifting the economic center of gravity from the West to Asia. China is already benefitting from the West's economic mistakes and is moving toward controlling the American economy by buying American assets and becoming the creditor for its government.

We Cannot Abandon Afghanistan

Does the Obama administration understand why the U.S. invaded Afghanistan? Does Obama understand that the U.S. has no choice but to remain in Afghanistan until it can establish a stable government that will not allow the country to be a base for terrorism?

The Christian Science Monitor has reported that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told CNN it would be "irresponsible" to send more troops into Afghanistan before the political situation is resolved. Actually it would be irresponsible to wait for the political situation to be resolved before committing sufficient troops to stabilize the situation. http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/1020/p02s07-usfp.html

The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 because the Taliban government of Afghanistan had allowed the country to be used by a group of al Qaeda terrorists who had attacked New York City and Washington, D.C., on September 11. The U.S. cannot afford to leave until it can be assured that the country has a government that will not allow the country to be used to stage any more attacks against the U.S.

Emanuel said it would be "reckless to make a decision on U.S. troop levels if, in fact, you haven't done a thorough analysis of whether, in fact, there's an Afghan partner ready to fill that space that the U.S. troops would create." http://edition.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/10/18/emanuel.afghanistan/index.html

Does Emanuel understand what the impact of Soviet rule followed by the rule of the Taliban? Both governments followed policies of discouraging, and in some cases eliminating, those who didn't blindly accept government orders.

The only people who had any experience operating a government were in the Taliban and they relied on terror to rule. Time will be required to find and train honest individuals who will not abuse their government positions.

Early volunteers for government service have often been dishonest, because dishonest people are more willing to take risks than honest people. It will be difficult to attract honest people until American forces can eliminate the violence that discourages them from getting involved.

If none of those who currently are interested in leading the government are capable of providing effective leadership, we will have to look for and develop new leaders. The U.S. may have to rebuild the country beginning at the local level.

Withdrawal before the country has a viable anti-terrorist government is not an option. Osama bin Laden would claim a major victory for violent Islam and use the victory to substantially increase recruitment.

Afghanistan is sometimes compared to my war [Vietnam] because it is a difficult place to defend against a guerrilla war. However, America's adversaries in Vietnam never attacked American cities or supported terror attacks on American cities. America's adversaries in Afghanistan have attacked American cities before and want to use the country as a base for future terrorist attacks against the United States and other countries.

American forces need to stay as long as it takes to prevent the country from once again becoming a base for terrorism even if that takes another 20 years. American forces are still based in Germany and Japan 64 years after the U.S. defeated them in World War II even though they are peaceful countries.

No one would suggest that police forces in American cities discontinue efforts to stop criminal street gangs just because efforts to stop them have not been completely successful. The police have to do whatever they can to limit gang activity so long as these gangs pose a threat.

The U.S. should not abandon efforts to limit the activities of international gangs of terrorists just because efforts to eliminate them have been unsuccessful. The U.S. and other nations have to do whatever is necessary to limit the activities of terrorist gangs and attempt to keep them from gaining secure bases from which to operate.

Obama Should Refuse Nobel Peace Prize

President Barack Obama should follow the example set by North Vietnamese negotiator Le Duc Tho in 1973 and refuse the Nobel Peace Prize. Many are criticizing the decision to award Obama the Peace Prize. This isn't the first controversial decision by the Nobel committee.

It is inconceivable that the Commander in Chief of a nation whose troops are actively engaged in armed combat should be awarded a peace prize. I happen to support the U.S. role in both conflicts, but recognize that involvement in war is inconsistent with receiving the Nobel Prize.

If Obama has made an "extraordinary effort" for peace, why are Americans still dying in Iraq and Afghanistan? How is the practice of Americans killing Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan an example of "reaching out" to the Muslim world? Is the Nobel Prize Committee demonstrating racism by seemingly suggesting that the killing of Muslims is insignificant?

Whether or not the American role in Iraq and Afghanistan is justified or not, that role is not a role of peace, but of war. Peaceful resolution of these conflicts may not be possible, but peaceful resolution of conflicts is what the Peace Prize should be about.

The Nobel Committee awarded the 1973 Peace Prize to Tho and Henry Kissinger for the work on the Paris Peace Agreement designed to end U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Tho refused to accept the award because he realized his nation had not abandoned its goal of uniting Vietnam by force if necessary. Kissinger initially accepted it but subsequently attempted unsuccessfully to return it.

Tho and Kissinger at least had done something that could qualify them for consideration. Obama has done nothing but talk.

Obama has not ended any war as President Theodore Roosevelt had when Roosevelt received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for helping negotiate an end to the Russo-Japanese War. Many questioned the decision to give the award to Roosevelt because American military forces were dealing with a violent rebellion in the Philippines.

Whether or not the American role in Iraq and Afghanistan is justified or not, that role is not a role of peace, but of war. Peaceful resolution of these conflicts may not be possible, but peaceful resolution of conflicts is what the Peace Prize should be about.

President Obama should not accept a Peace Prize so long as these conflicts are going on.

Down Syndrome Doesn’t Stop Eagle Scouts

Lucas Wondra has achieved something only about 4 % of those who enter scouting achieve. He has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

His achievement is particularly significant because the 16-year-old Hutchinson (Kansas) High School student has the genetic disorder Down Syndrome. Lucas is one of many who are demonstrating that individuals with Down Syndrome can be productive members of society. Maybe they are not capable of performing brain surgery or becoming professional athletes, but then neither are the vast majority of the rest of us.

Individuals with Down Syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21 , a condition called trisomy 21, which can cause physical and mental disabilities because having three copies of some genes interferes with the normal operation of cells and development. Down Syndrome children may not be geniuses, but many of them are able to attend classes with other students instead of being limited to special education classes as was once the case.

The cause of the extra copy of the chromosome is unknown, but it is known that an extra copy may be received from one of the parents or the extra chromosome may appear during the embryonic stage of development resulting in some cells with the extra copy and some with only two copies of chromosome 21. The possibility of an extra chromosome developing in embryonic cells is a major reason why embryonic cells may be unsafe to use in treating human disorders

Lucas isn't the first Scout with Down Syndrome to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. For example, Adam Townsend of Mesquite, Texas, became an Eagle Scout on June1, 2009. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/stories/DN-eaglescout_01met.ART.State.Edition1.5084f30.html

A. J. Trueblood of Lakeland, Florida, became an Eagle Scout in August, 2006. http://www.theledger.com/article/20060814/NEWS/608140355?Title=Disabled-Teen-Becomes-Eagle-Scout

Clayton "Trey" Henderson of Ridgeview High School in Orange Park, Florida, became an Eagle Scout in April, 2006. http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/040106/nec_21499327.shtml

Down Syndrome scouts have to meet the same requirements as other Eagle Scouts if they are physically able to do so. A. J. Trueblood didn't even mention that he had Down Syndrome on his application.

Lucas is unable to swim so he substituted a 20 mile hike. He also completed five 10 mile hikes. I don't know if I even hiked 20 miles when I took basic training in the army, although it sometimes felt like 20 miles.

Lucas is physically unable to speak but can communicate using sign language and a PDA with voice software. He used the PDA to communicate with a congregation while serving as a chaplain's aide including offering a thought for the day and leading in the Lord's Prayer.

Many of those with Down Syndrome never had the opportunity for achievement that these Eagle Scouts had because their mothers listened to ignorant, prejudiced doctors and others who persuaded them to have abortions. Many share the prejudiced (or is it bigoted) view of Nicholas Provenzo that "a person afflicted with Down syndrome is only capable of being marginally productive (if at all) and requires constant care and supervision." http://ruleofreason.blogspot.com/2008/09/palins-down-syndrome-child-and-right-to.htm

Provenzo obviously doesn't understand what those with Down Syndrome can do. I wonder how many of those who think Down Syndrome individuals cannot do anything had the drive to become Eagle Scouts.

Perhaps the lamest argument for aborting Down Syndrome babies has been suggested to students on more than one occasion by University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Professor Albert K. Harris. "In my opinion, the moral thing for older mothers to do is to have amniocentesis, as soon during pregnancy as is safe for the fetus, test whether placental cells have a third chromosome #21, and abort the fetus if it does. The brain is the last organ to become functional." http://www.newsobserver.com/news/health_science/story/947991.html

"I know somebody who had a child like this, and it ruined their life," he said.

Down Syndrome babies do require more time and effort than some other babies, but that doesn't mean they should not have the opportunity to be born and live.

Active "normal" children may actually require more supervision than Down Syndrome children because they may be physically able to get into dangerous situations faster than Down Syndrome children.

Potential parents who are concerned that a child with Down Syndrome might require more of their time should reconsider the decision to become parents. Down Syndrome isn't the worst thing that can happen to a child.

A child could be afflicted with a fatal form of cancer or Muscular Dystrophy. A child might be severely injured in an accident or abducted.

A child might require greater effort from parents because of hyperactivity or autism. A "normal" child may decide to get involved with drugs or gangs.

These and many other problems that can occur with children can adversely affect families, but the problem isn't with the children. Major illness of the death of a child from any cause potentially can destroy a family if parents start playing a blame game. The problem in these situations is with parents who cannot accept adversity.

Sue Thomas was born in May, 1950, and was a normal child until she suddenly lost her hearing at 18 months. The "experts" told her parents that she would never amount to anything and should be institutionalized. Her parents ignored the advice and made sure that she had the opportunity for as normal a life as possible including attending school with children who could hear.

At the age of 7 she became the youngest Ohio Champion free style skater in history. In 1979, she became part of an elite FBI surveillance team. In 2002 a tv series Sue Thomas: F.B. Eye debuted based on her career, although many of the episodes dealt with the type cases facing the FBI at the time of the series rather than cases from the 80's. The Gospel Music Channel is bringing that series back on September 14.

Some people try to define others by what they cannot do instead of what they can do. Lucas Wondra, Adam Townsend, A.J. Trueblood and Clayton Henderson have done something I couldn't have done when I was their age. They have become Eagle Scouts.

I was a Cub Scout, but my family moved to another town when I was in the 6th grade and I never became a Boy Scout. Even if I had participated, I doubt that I could have fulfilled the requirements for an Eagle Scout because I was the stereotypical "98 pound weakling" in high school.

I cannot play a musical instrument like Sarah Itoh who has Down Syndrome and who was playing the clarinet by the time she was11 years old. She is an accomplished public speaker who particularly enjoys telling audiences how she enjoys Special Olympics. At her age I had enough trouble just repeating lines in a church Christmas play. http://www.somi.org/blog.php?entryID=558

We all have different abilities and disabilities. We can do some things that others cannot do and they can do some things that we cannot do.

Sue Thomas responded to her loss of hearing by learning to read lips. That skill got her a job as an FBI agent because she could what other FBI agents could not do. She could tell what a suspect under visual surveillance was saying without the need to plant a microphone near him.

We don't know the full potential of what individuals with Down Syndrome can do because for many years people just labeled them "retarded" and assumed they couldn't do anything. Maybe none of the Eagle Scouts mentioned will become an astronaut like Eagle Scout Neil Armstrong or a movie director like Eagle Scout Steven Spielberg. However, drama student and cheerleader Clayton Henderson might become a successful actor like Joseph "Chris" Burke who has Down Syndrome and was a star of the successful tv series "Life Goes On.."

How many of us could star in a tv series?

Some people claim that Down Syndrome children cost to society in the form of government programs that have assisted them. I doubt seriously all Down Syndrome individuals together have cost society nearly as much as Bernie Madoff.

Pakistan Isn’t Cambodia

I've seen occasional recent references comparing Pakistan to Cambodia during the Vietnam War. If the Bush administration, or Barack Obama, thinks the two are comparable it is making the biggest miscalculation since the U.S. made the mistake of getting too close to China in the Korean War. Obama wants to expand the current Bush attacks on border areas to include an attack on Osama bin Laden where ever he might be in Pakistan.U.N. forces had routed the North Korea Army and appeared to on the verge of winning when China became concerned that the Americans might decide to go ahead and conquer China as well because China had been supplying the North Koreans. China responded by sending in its army. President Harry Truman decided that it was best not to antagonize the Chinese any more than necessary and prohibited bombing supply bases in China.Enemies using sanctuaries isn't a new situation for the U.S. Andrew Jackson faced such a situation along the border of what was then Spanish owned Florida during the administration of President James Monroe. Jackson took care of the problem by in effect declaring war on Spain with nothing more than an ambiguous letter from President Monroe. Jackson invaded Florida without any authorization from Congress and captured the Spanish governor at a poorly defended fort at Pensacola. Spain after a protest decided Florida wasn't worth the trouble and ceded it to the U.S. During the Vietnam War communist forces started using areas of Cambodia along the Vietnam border as sanctuaries for supply depots and troop bases. Cambodia with a population of only 7 million and no military force to speak of couldn't force the Vietnamese out and was afraid that acknowledging their presence would draw the country into the war. North Vietnam denied having any forces in Cambodia. The U.S. occasionally bombed these forces and sent in commando type forces, but denied doing either. The U.S. didn't want to formally enter the country because it didn't want to risk forcing Cambodia to ask for assistance from someone like China or the U.S.S.R. Cambodia also ignored the actions of the U.S. claiming it wasn't aware of the presense of foreign troops or any bombing. In early 1970 Prince Norodom Sihanouk's efforts to keep the country out of the conflict failed and he was overthrown in a coup by pro-U.S. officials. The new government invited the U.S. in to eliminate the communist bases. Subsequently the country endured a civil war that resulted in over a million deaths.Pakistan with an estimated 2006 population of 165 million is the 6th most populous nation in the world with a population equal to the population of Iraq plus the population of Russia. It has the world's 7th largest military force, including nuclear weapons and missiles to deliver them. Pakistan's population is approximately equal to the combined populations of World War II Germany and Japan. Militants are a potential threat to overthrow or even take over the government. They would welcome an incident they could use to attract support for a Jihad type war. Al Qaeda may be using Pakistan as a sanctuary as part of a strategy to create an incident to draw Pakistan into their Jihad. Osama bin Laden might welcome being killed if he could achieve martyr status and induce Pakistan to declare war or to start supplying his forces with conventional or nuclear weapons. Pakistan has already had a problem with a government scientist helping other countries develop nuclear weapons without government approval. Other government officials might respond to a U.S. incident by allowing militants to "steal" nuclear weapons. If those militants could also "steal" a missile that could be fired from a ship, they might be able to destroy a U.S. city. The United States have enough to handle without having to take on a major military power like Pakistan. Al Qaeda sanctuaries in Pakistan do increase the hazards of those serving in Afghanistan just like the Cambodian sanctuaries increased the threat to those of us who served in Vietnam. The rockets and mortars fired in my direction may have been stockpiled in Cambodia before being provided for attacks. The Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces where I was took their R & R in Cambodia. However, the potential threat of a much wider war makes the risk of attacking sanctuaries, or attempting to attack Osama bin Laden as Barack Obama wants to do, too great to take the chance. Pakistan isn't a weak nation like Cambodia or early 19th Century Spain. Pakistan has a stronger military force than China had during the Korean War. Little Iraq ignored an ultimatum. Why would any intelligent person think Pakistan would take orders from the U.S.?

Sgt. Rafael Peralta Deserves a Medal of Honor

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' decision to award Sgt. Rafael Peralta a Navy Cross instead of a Medal of Honor makes no sense.Either Peralta grabbed a grenade to protect his fellow Marines or he did not. If Peralta grabbed the grenade then he deserves a Medal of Honor. If he did not grab the grenade than there is no reason to award him a Navy Cross.Peralta was born in Mexico and joined the Marines as soon as he received a green card. He subsequently became a U.S. citizen while serving in the Marines. On November 15, 2004, while serving as part of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment during Operation Al Fajr in the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, Peralta entered a building with 11 other Marines including Lance Corporal T.J. Kaemmerer, a Marine combat correspondent attached to Peralta's Company. According to Kaemmerer's account, they had cleared most of the concrete house when they came to the last room with the door closed. Peralta opened the door and then jumped out of the way after being hit by AK-47 fire to allow the other Marines to fire into the room. Peralta was lying on the floor wounded when a yellow colored grenade landed near him. As the other Marines scrambled to get away from it, they saw his hand grab the grenade and pull it toward his body.Col. Eric Berg III, an Army pathologist who autopsied Peralta's remains, said in the 2005 report that the head wound from what is believed to be a ricochet from an American rifle would have been "nearly instantly fatal. He could not have executed any meaningful motions."I don't know upon what empirical research he based his opinion. In order to make such a definitive statement there would need to be scientific research comparing observations of people after having been shot in the same manner. Without such research Berg's statement is only an opinion, not a fact.Four other experts - Peralta's battalion surgeon, and two neurosurgeons and a neurologist who examined the autopsy reports - said Peralta could have knowingly reached for the grenade because the ricochet that hit him was traveling at "low velocity" and would not have immediately killed him.I don't know upon what evidence they are basing the claim that the wound occurred before the grenade exploded. The Marines withdrew after the grenade exploded because the back of the building was on fire. Safe withdrawal would have meant that they would have continued to fire as they left and the bullet could have hit Peralta's head at that time. The experts may not be giving sufficient consideration to the role of reflex actions in such situations. Many heroic acts in war are reflexive actions. If a grenade lands near you and you take time to think about what to do it will explode before you make a decision. Peralta wouldn't have had to be fully conscious. His eyes saw the grenade and he reflexively grabbed it. By the time I left Vietnam, I had developed reflexes to noises that could be exploding shells. If I heard something that might be an incoming round, my feet would start moving to the bunker while my brain determined if it was incoming or outgoing. If Peralta could not have grabbed the grenade, what action did he take that would justify a Navy Cross? Opening the door to the room where the insurgents were might quality for a bronze star or maybe a silver star, but not a Navy Cross. Otherwise the Navy would have to award such a medal everytime someone entered a room where an enemy might be.Marine Reserve Lt. Col. Scott Marconda, who investigated the incident in 2004 as a major and judge advocate, makes a good point. "there's no way that grenade got under the center of mass of his body without him putting it there. I'm not a cheerleader. It is what it is. And my point is: I believe that he did that."Does the Department of Defense believe that the grenade just miraculously landed where Peralta's body could protect the other Marines from the blast? Something is very wrong here. Congress needs to investigate why the Department of Defense has made such a strange decision.

Russia Proves NATO Needed

Russia's overreaction to the Georgian attack on South Ossetia demonstrates Russia is a potential aggressor and NATO is needed to prevent it from attempting to expand by force. In my previous post I indicated that Georgia's attack was ill advised and unjustified. Georgia's argument that it has an historical claim on Abkhazia and South Ossetia ignores the fact that Russia can make the same type claim about Georgia. Russia's claim on Georgia might be even stronger because Georgian Joseph Stalin ruled the Soviet Union for many years.Russia could have justified intervening to force Georgian troops out of South Ossetia by citing the U.S. action against Iraq after Iraq invaded Kuwait. However, Russia went beyond that and invaded Georgia like it planned to stay. Russia also made the mistake of allowing some armed thugs to use violence against Georgians and their property.Russia's invasion of Georgia indicates it may be planning to invade Ukraine. NATO should grant membership to Ukraine now to prevent such an invasion. Ukraine has a strong army that wouldn't need much back up from NATO. European nations should take initial steps to expand their military forces with indications that they will not follow through if Russia withdraws from Georgia. European leaders should consider the success of President John F. Kennedy's strong response to the Soviet Union's efforts to place missiles in Cuba. The U.S. should do what President Ronald Reagan did in the early 80's and increase spending on missile defense technology. A potential danger with a strong response is that it could bring down the current Russia government.European nations need to do whatever they can to prevent having to obtain fuel from Russia. Such actions should include expanding solar and wind energy along with nuclear and clean coal technology. Coal plants should include algae reactors to produce oil for fuel use. European nations should work to develop the technology to convert plastic, paper, etc. wastes into fuel.

What Was He Thinking?

What was Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili thinking when he attacked the former Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia? Did he really think he could conquer those areas without a Russian response? As the oldest of three boys he should have been aware of what can happen when big brother decides to get even with little brother for some provocative action. As the oldest of four kids I learned that parents don't take kindly to an older child taking advantage of size when dealing with younger siblings. Those who don't have siblings probably have seen the following scenario on a tv show or movie. Little brother teases big brother until big brother responds by hitting little brother. Little brother then complains to dad who, depending upon when the program or movie was made, takes off his belt to punish big brother or sternly lectures big brother.Saakashvili thinks Georgia should be able to control the provinces because they were historically part of Georgia. However, Russia can make the same claim about Georgia being historically a part of Russia long before Russia started calling itself the Soviet Union. In fact, native Georgian Joseph Dzhugashvili (aka Joseph Stalin) helped turn Russia into the Soviet Union The provinces left Georgia during the same period when Georgia left the Soviet Union / Russia. If Georgia can justify retaking the provinces by force, then Russia can justify retaking Georgia by force.Georgia needs to abandon all claims to its former provinces and try to find a way to peacefully coexist with the Russian bear. That is if it isn't already too late.
