What did you “used to believe?”

I happen to have a television right above my desk and I try to keep it on some sort of cable news network. I glanced up during a lull in my day and saw the anchor talking about I Used To Believe, a Web site dedicated to adults sharing their most ridiculous childhood beliefs. It's pretty quality.

Here are some of my favorites: "I used to think the local newscasters could see me, so my mom would put on the news when she had to do house work because I behaved myself, in fear the newspeople would tell on me." (By the way, that is TOTALLY true. I will tell on you. Granted, I anchor at 10 p.m. on Sundays, so I'm guessing there aren't many badly behaved kids still up to tattle on.)

"I found my mother's 'Alien' card when I was 5 years old. I actually believed my mom was an alien, until I finally asked her and she explained that she was an immigrant."

Then there's a list of some common ones:

• If you swallow a seed, a plant will grow in your stomach.

• Chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

• Thunder is God bowling (totally guilty of believing that one).

One big belief I had when I was little was that everyone bought their children when they were babies and picked them up in a special store. My younger brother and I were adopted. I was 5 when we went and got him, and I asked if we had a receipt and could return him. Turns out it doesn't work like that.

What are some of your childhood beliefs? Anything you tell your children to believe that isn't exactly true?

I use to think/believe that Hawaii and Alaska were located near each other because that is where they were on the map. I could not for the life of me understand how Hawaii could be hot and Alaska cold. I don't remember how old I was when I believed this but it vexed me to no end.
Luckily, I didn't grow up to be a Vice-Presidential candidate. :0)

P.S. Was told when I was a child, that lightening and thunder were the way that the earth communicated…. the electricity said something….the thunder answered. And back and forth it went.

I thought that since the world was round and maps were flat, our world map was only one side of the world. We would learn about the other side when we were older.

But we never did.

So I decided that was because we didn't know enough about the other side of the world to make a map.
Instantly, I knew it was my destiny to make a map of the other side of the world.
I still find it very sad.

When I was growing up, my grandpa worked at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto. He was in charge of putting water in the water towers. I used to believe he had a really long garden house that he carry to the top of the towers to fill them up.

I also thought that the “no passing” signs on the highways meant you weren't supposed to go any further past the sign (even though the highway kept going!?!). Always thought we were breaking the law many, many times between Lawrence and Grandma's.

Another one I forgot — I used to get mad at my mom for drinking and driving. She was drinking soda. I just thought you shouldn't drink anything while driving!

I used to believe you could grow up to be whatever you wanted to be, but then I realized my parents were the world's biggest liars.

Did you know Santa and the Easter Bunny aren't real either? I try to spare my son the anguish of this realization by telling him the truth but he doesn't believe me. I forced him to stay up and watch me put the presents under the tree, but he thinks Santa just gave them too me because we don't have a fireplace.

I used to believe that I was the only self-aware person and everyone else was a mindless robot programmed to flesh out the world and behave like a person. I still cannot entirely disprove that theory but I can't say I consider it the most likely option either.

Along the same lines of self-centered belief that I was God's “chose one” or something, I used to think that, when my ears rang, the first thoughts that would come to my head would be instructions from God. Needless to say, God's instructions always fit nicely with my own wishes and desires.

All of this from the same guy who asked him mom at age 4 who created God since everyone said that God created everything. (I later returned to this and other incongruities when I became agnostic.)

Oh, and before I underwent the proper treatment (poor eye focus) and got glasses as well, I also used to think that there were two of everything but I could only see them by forcing my eyes in different directions.

I used to believe that the United States stood for the betterment of mankind. Then I studied history. Now I believe that those in charge are trying to make the world a free enterprise and free trade zone. And that politicians have joined a politburo because only they know what is best for the masses. I used to believe that God was good and loved mankind. Know I know his name is used for killing those whom refuse to bow to “others” true (sic) beliefs. I now believe in mans' inhumanity to man. I believe it when the marine recruiter said that in all of recorded history there are only 100 days of world peace.
That is why they must always be ready to deploy on a moments notice. I used to believe that by now we could hear others thoughts, we would be riding in flying cars, and traveling to outter space.

Is this really about bigotry or is it more about a couple people who voiced their opinions on religion and deities? Why is it not ok for us to state what we don't believe? talk about being bigoted. as a minority (athiest) in this country, we face more bigotry than you could imagine. I'm not trying to take away your silly ideas or remove the terms printed on our currency or used in our court system. i'm merely stating that I don't believe that there is a god and that Christianity as well as every other religion have been lying to us for hundreds and hundreds of years, in order to subdue the masses and command power over the people.
I guarantee that if you were asked which Greek or Roman god you believe in, you'd chuckle and say “that's mythology”. well guess what.. maybe (i hope) in a couple hundred more years Jesus will go the way of Zeus and Persephone.

maybe, just maybe it wasn't about you and your beliefs, but more a lash out at the feeling we get when we finally see the truth and realize all the lies that were force fed to us. When you've been lied to for years and years and you have an epiphany, don't you respond with “what a bunch of crap”?

It's so funny how bent out of shape people get over their beliefs. Even between two religious groups who primarily have the same views, it can cause all out war. Getting overly defensive about a subject is a sure sign that one isn't 100% sure of what they believe in.

I was wondering who would be the first individual to get on here and spew their anti-religion nonsense. It never fails. It doesn't matter if the topic of the article or blog is suppose to be fun, someone always feels the necessity to get on and start the anti-religion rhetoric.
The funny part about all this, is that when you call them on it, they try to turn it around and try to see that you are “overly sensitive” or that they are the one's being discriminated against. Plus, they never take responsibility for their posts. Instead of saying, “yeah, you know what, this wasn't the time or place for me to say what I did. Things should have been kept light and fun as was the blogger's intent, so I apologize for taking a situation that was suppose to be fun, and posting an “opinion” that was inappropriate and contrary to the spirit of the blog.”

But, I don't believe that is ever going to happen, so “oh well” another belief down the drain.

I used to believe that nuns could fly. (Circa 1968) Wanted to become Catholic at age 4, so I could fly, too.
At one point, our neighbors across the street had a gorgeous rose garden. They were also devout Catholics. As a 4 yr. old, I would go over in their yard, smell the roses, and talk to “Jesus”. (The neighbors didn't mind my being there) Came home and told my mom that the neighbors had Jesus in their garden. She laughed and patted me on the head. I said, “No, I mean it!” I made her follow me over there. She looked, and cracked up laughing. Then she explained, “No dear, that's Mary, Jesus' mother.” Heck, was I disillusioned. I mean, the statue had long hair and a “robe” on, so being a Lutheran preschooler, I thought it was Jesus.
Okay, now for the silly stuff. I thought the lady on Romper Room could actually see me thru that huge magnifying glass-mirror thing.
My older sister had me thinking that cheese curds were actually cheese “turds”, that people pooped out after they ate cheese. I'm making “special” plans for her 50th birthday later this summer to get revenge. Planning to string 50 cheap bras across her driveway and lawn. Ha!
Thought that “Tricky Dick” was a bad word/phrase, until my Grandma informed me it referred to then Pres. Nixon.
Thought that Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers were real.
Worst of all, I thought men could be trusted! Pffffft!

Just because it scares you to think of a world without some afterlife, doesn't mean we should be hushed and kept in the back of the room. I refuse to apologize for my beliefs, or disbelief. also, when IS the right time for an atheist to discuss this topic? It seems every time we do, we face this very same backlash. how dare we challenge the status quo.

I found this partial list of other Deities that claim Dec. 25. They all came long before Jesus Christ. I've also read that the last name Christ wasn't a name at all, more of a title. Christianity is real, you're correct. however, it's only real enough to perpetuate this story in order to gain more power over more people. The entire story of Jesus was ripped off from multiple sources with Horus being one of the first. They are all bastardizations of a story relating to the Sun from many many thousands of years ago.

Some of these things I still believe in…

That if I closed my eyes and couldn't see you, you couldn't see me.

That it's okay if you don't believe in God. I do and in my world, I'm the only one that is concerned with what I believe. My believing doesn't hurt you and your not believing doesn't hurt me.

I used to believe the prosecutors in the juvenile justice system really cared about the victim. I learned the hard way that they only care about what they look like in the courtroom.

I used to believe I was really an only child and someday my “real” parents would come for me.

That if you were a romantic, you would find your one true love. I now know that can be true as long as you understand that no one is perfect and in the big scheme of things, the little things just don't matter.

That thunder was just the Angels bowling and nothing to be scared of. The lightening was one of them getting a strike and something to be excited about.

That rain was the Angels crying because children were being bad and not listening to their parents.

That if you swallowed your gum, your tummy would blow a big bubble and you would blow up.

That my face was going to freeze in the contorted shape I put it in when I got mad.

I still believe:

That you can do anything you want to do if you put your mind to it.

That most people are good and it doesn't matter what race, religion, nationality or sex you are.

That seeing life through the eyes of a child is the absolute best way to see it.

That when you lose a loved one, the pain doesn't necessarily fade with time, but your understanding of death becomes clearer.

you don't have to say he was born on dec. 25. it's public knowledge, as celebrated with Christmas, that this is the birthday. Many people assimilate Jesus as a god. he may be a historical figure, but i'm saying he's a historical mythological figure, just like Zeus. There are some 3,000 different deities from different religions, past and present. how many of them do you subscribe to? this is what first turned me off to Christianity. the discounting of everyone else's invisible man theories, only to claim their own as fact.

and yes, i do believe in Alexander the Great. I believe that there are many historical texts documenting his life. However, i do not worship him, and I do not take everything that is said about him to be fact. after all, those who write the books, own the history. you should know this, because Constantine is responsible for most of what you celebrate as Christianity today.

There's plenty of historical texts that talk about what Zeus did too, but I'm pretty sure you don't believe he was real. Following the teachings of what Jesus supposedly said/did is admirable. they are great life lessons. basically don't be a prick and be nice to people. However, had Jesus truly existed, he would NOT want such a massive following with such mindless repetition of his supposed words. How many Christians can you point to that are truly living the Christian lifestyle? so many are full of lies, deceit, anger, unforgiving. And those are just the priests and evangelists. If more Christians practiced what they preached and weren't so judgmental of others, maybe Christianity would leave a better taste in peoples mouths. Christianity should be something that individuals practice within themselves, and not a club that you belong to. organized religion is the “devil”, and if the Jesus you proclaim, were here today, he would be mortified at what has been done in his name.

Just because there are differing opinions as to the validity of religions does not make the human who does not believe in a specific credo/theology an idiot or a bigot. Neither does subscription to any given theology/religion make one human better than another. Simply different.

Our founding fathers had differing opinions as to the merits of religion as well. It is wonderful that you have found what you have chosen to believe, and if it makes you happy/fulfills you, then so be it. That being said, what another human being holds true is theirs to discover. If he/she believes christianity is bunk, that is what he/she believes based upon his/her personal analyzation/feelings/research. Another human's lack of belief in religion/different opinion of theology or religious beliefs in no way threatens your personal beliefs.

Being homogenous is boring as hell.

AreUNormal, the fact that humans fail to measure up to Jesus' standard does hinder the testimony of Him but does not negate its truth. I do completely agree though that christians do plenty to put a bad taste in people's mouths. I wish that weren't the case.

The squeakiest wheels always seem to get the attention. It's about time the message of Christ was not only shared but demonstrated by action.

A friend of mine stood on the Word of God and the fact that Christ took all of our sins and sicknesses when He went to the cross and was recently healed of parkinsons, liver psorosis, Rheumatiod arthritis, and one of his heart valves was bad but now is completely made like new. At church, I have seen a man that wore a 3 inch build up on his leg but when we prayed for him in the name of Jesus, his leg came out to be even with the other. This same thing has happened to many others I know. There are other examples of this across the world and my Pastor has been to multiple countries and has seen God use him and give blind people their sight back and have hearing restored to the deaf.

I have also witnessed other things that I could go on and on about. These signs have proven to me the existence of God and His Son Jesus. The problem is that now days you don't see these things happen very often in churches because they choose to say healings and miracles only took place in the days of the disciples. The apostle Paul himself declared that he didn't want to come in fancy speech to persuade by brainwashing and arguments but he came in power so that people could see God's real power demonstrated right in front of them. I have not only seen for others but have been the recipient of that very power to heal and deliver of things. Some call it the power of persuasion but I know it to be the power of God. If churches really preached the Gospel today how Christ did, you would see miracles happening all over the place. The fact that you don't see miracles and you don't see people showing the same character as Christ is pure evidence that very few truly embrace what the Bible is about and the message contained within. The true Gospel will be accompanied with a demonstration of God's power.

In a nutshell, these are only a few of the reasons why I believe.

Oh, please. Give me names and proof of the disabilities, otherwise I'll consider you a filthy liar. If everything that you said is true, then why are there ANY sick, blind, deaf, or otherwise disabled people in the world? Doesn't god or jesus love them? And why doesn't god want the Royals to be any good? I see athletes thanking god after every victory, so apparently god must want the other team to lose. Why does god want the Royals to lose so much?

I like how you assumed I'm a liar. the first person was myself, the gentleman with the build up was Hugh Craven, and the third was Kevin Goodwin. the reason people are still sick is simply the fact that God gave man authority to preach and minister to those on Earth. When people reject their call and Savior and don't do what God commanded you end up with broken, sick, and depressed people. the fact that there are sick people is a reflection of a lack of people ministering and a lack of faith. The fact is you asked why I believed. I told you and you attacked me as a liar which speaks more to your character than all your other posts above. if you aren't going to be respectful of people honestly answering your questions then don't ask.

Sorry for the short post prior to this. I was on my phone typing which can get tough after a little bit. For more examples of healing, there is a book entitled Christ the Healer by FF Bosworth. A good read and his ministry had phenomenol results of God moving in powerful ways. However at the end of the book there a number of testimonies that people had of their conditions and the healing that resulted from prayer. I thought I would suggest it so you could research a little for yourself if you would like.
FF Bosworth himself has a good testimony as well about being healed of severe lung disease and TB. Check it out if you would like.
