See You at the Pole encourages school prayer

Wednesday is the 18th annual See You at the Pole day, which encourages students to stand outside their public schools and pray around the flagpole.According to their Web site, about 3 million kids from 50 states and more than 20 countries gather each year to pray around the flagpole right before school.The Liberty Counsel is a group that defends religious freedom and supports SYATP, noting that students have met resistance in the past when it comes to religion.Matthew Staver, the founder of the Liberty Counsel and Dean of the Liberty University School of Law in Lynchburg, Va., says, “They have a constitutional right to pray before, during and after the school day, even while on school grounds.” He also says that school administrators need to educate themselves on First Amendment rights instead of “acting out of bigotry, religious bias or ignorance of the law.”SYATP was covered by the J-W in 2005: For a day, prayers outside schoolThis week is also Scriptures in Schools Week, when students are encouraged to bring their Bibles to read during free time.Check out the U.S. Department of Education’s site on [religion and public schools][9].This is a controversial subject and has [garnered much debate][10] in the past.
