5 a.m. update: Westar Energy is showing 1469 customers currently without power. KU Police and Fire Medical crews also responding on multiple burglary and fire alarms. Most of those are believed to have been triggered by the surge. No reports of anything visible.

Lawrence Transit has announced that they are delaying the start of services this morning until 9 a.m.. More updates from the Journal-World soon.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is reporting "major drifting" on area highways due to blowing/gusting winds.

4:50 update: 1462 Westar Energy customers are without power.

4:10 a.m. update: Westar Energy is showing 1076 customers without power. The heavy snow continues to damage tree branches and bring down powerlines. Fire crews are still standing by on at least two different scenes with arcing lines and transformers sparking.

3:45 a.m. update: 965 Westar Energy customers are without power.

Lawrence Police reported a power line down near 23rd and Louisiana Streets around 3:20 a.m.. A second line was reported down about 10 minutes later in the 1200 block of the alley between Delaware and Pennsylvania Streets.

Westar Energy crews just arrived on the scene on 23rd Street and are working to repair the downed line.

Around 12:10 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to respond on two automatic fire alarms in an area from near 14th and Alumni Place, north to the 1200 block of Oread Avenue.

As firefighters were responding on those alarms, Lawrence Police were called to the 1500 block of Tennessee Street for a vehicle versus utility pole accident. Firefighters were also called to this scene after receiving a report that the vehicle was catching fire. Police reported that the vehicle was not on fire, only steam but, requested that firefighters continue to check the utility pole. Firefighters arrived to report one vehicle with heavy damage. The driver was not injured. Firefighters reported a fuse on the utility pole had tripped, likely causing the automatic fire alarms to trip in the area. Police arrested the driver, who now faces charges of OUI, No Insurance and Driving without a valid driver's license.

Westar Energy's website only showed one customer without electricity in the area. That service was restored about an hour later.

Just before 2:20 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of N 900 Road, south of Clinton Lake, after dispatchers received a report of eight or nine gunshots heard. The caller believed the shots came from the area to the west. Deputies did not report locating anything in that area.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Just before midnight Lawrence Fire Medical crews were called to the area of W. 24th Terrace and Crestline on a reported structure fire. Dispatchers received one call from a cell phone that reported "the building is on fire." The person placing the call disconnected without giving any other information. Fire Medical crews and Lawrence Police checked numerous apartment buildings in the area and were not able to locate any signs of fire. The original caller did not answer the phone when dispatchers or police attempted to call them back.

Around 2 a.m., there started to be reports of vehicles sliding off of area roadways. None of these accidents in Douglas County were reported to involve any serious injuries.

Power outages began to add up starting around 3:30 a.m., with around 40 outages. That number doubled within 45 minutes to 80 outages in the county. Outage numbers stayed pretty consistent until shortly after 5 a.m., when those numbers jumped to over 2,800 outages. Most of those appeared to be from around 6th and Massachusetts Street, west to Iowa Street.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Lawrence Police were called to the intersection of 23rd Street and Massachusetts Street at 3:49 for a single vehicle accident. The vehicle reportedly struck a utility pole in the area. Police confirmed no one was injured and there was no need for Fire Medical crews to respond to the scene. Officers did report that there appeared to be a power outage in the area.

At 3:52 a.m., Police were called to an address in the 2200 block of Harper on a possible aggravated burglary. A caller reported that he believed someone had entered his home through a backdoor. The subject didn't stick around and left through the same door. The caller told Dispatchers that he, the resident, had armed himself with a knife and was in a bedroom with one of his two children. Four officers checked the area and did not report locating anyone in the area. It sounded as though Officers believe the resident heard the car accident and thought it was someone inside his home.

The power outage knocked power out for 1,270 customers at its peak, at 5:30 this morning. Service was restored to all customers shortly after 6 a.m.. A map of the outages and a few other details regarding the outage can be found here from a report filed this morning by Operation 100 News.

At 4:57 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to 1018 W 24th Street on a report of a fire in the laundry room. Eight officers responded to the area of the call. The first arriving officer reported heavy smoke from the building, which was keeping him from being able to safely enter. Fire crews quickly located and extinguished a fire in the basement of the building. The area of the fire was secured with fire line tape until an investigator could arrive. There was no immediate word whether or not this fire was accidental or possibly another suspected arson. No injuries were reported.

At 3:49, Lawrence Police were called to investigate a non-injury accident involving a vehicle crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of 23rd Street and Massachusetts Street.

As of 5:30, Westar's website showed 1,270 customers were without power. Original outage number at 4:30 was 1,265.

Outage numbers dropped to 13 at 5:45 a.m. and showed to be fully restored at 6:05.

Police responded on at least two burglary alarms in the area, believed related to the outage.

Officer also investigated what was reported as an aggravated burglary in the 2200 block of Harper Street. A resident believes someone possibly entered the residence through a backdoor, then turned around and exited. Police are investigating whether or not the resident actually saw someone or if this could also be related to the power outage.

Lawrence Police conducted six vehicle stops this morning, one resulting in an OUI related arrest.

Shortly after 3 a.m., Westar began reporting power outages in west Lawrence. By 3:30 a.m., the estimated number of customers without electricity jumped from 350 to 1,889. It was unclear what caused the sudden spike in outages, all in the same general area of town. The number of outages held steady until around 5 a.m., when it went down to 956. Power was said to be restored by 5:30 a.m., to all customers in Douglas County.

Lawrence Police received information on trespassing at an apartment in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane. A resident reported an unknown man at the door who was trying to "get in." The resident reported that the man was possibly intoxicated. No arrests were reported related to the incident.

6:30am - Electricity to the remaining 10 customers has been restored. Currently no outages reported in Douglas County.

5:15am - Westar Energy's website now shows only 10 customers without power.

5:07am - Westar Energy's latest update has dropped the number of customers without power to 1,835. Also added a rainfall total map from the National Weather Service. These are radar indicated totals, so they may not be exact. Map is accurate as of 5 a.m..

4:45am - Lawrence Fire has arrived on scene after a report of arcing power lines near the intersection of W 23rd and Ousdahl Road. Westar Energy arrived a short time later and the fire crew cleared from the scene. Outage numbers have dropped by one in the past hour. Now sitting at 3,457.

Kansas City Power & Light has also now updated their website to show one outage in south Douglas County, zip code 66006.

4:06am - This morning's storms are believed to be responsible for knocking out power to just under 3,500 Westar Energy customers this morning in Lawrence.

Earlier this morning, around 2 a.m., Westar was only showing one customer without power in eastern Lawrence. After 3:30 a.m., that number jumped to 95. As of 4 a.m., that number has jumped to 3,458. According to Westar Energy's website the majority of those outages are in central Lawrence.

The National Weather Service office in Topeka has not issued any watches or warnings for any of the passing storms. Everything is well below severe limits currently. Should something develop and there is a watch or warning issued, check back here for the latest.
