This morning started out pretty quiet. Police in Lawrence responded a couple disturbances, a theft, and a non-injury accident, all before 4:15 a.m..

Around 4:15 a.m., Police were dispatched to a residence in the area of W 4th and McDonald Drive for a report of an Aggravated Burglary. The resident told Police that he awoke to find a thin black male, approximately 5'10" tall, was inside the house. The unknown man fled through a backdoor of the home and was last seen running westbound from the 300 block of McDonald Drive. He was said to be wearing all black clothing with a do-rag.

Then, at 5:57 a.m., Police were dispatched to a residence about a block away from Deerfield Elementary School on a report of another Aggravated Burglary. The second address is just under a mile away from the first Aggravated Burglary report. Officers quickly responded to the area and began searching for the man. This time the description of the man was a little more vague, a "smaller build," unknown race male standing approximately 5'9". Again the subject was said to have fled through a backdoor. An officer patrolling that area reported making contact with a male on foot in front of Deerfield Elementary School.

After further investigation, Officers determined that the male was involved in the most recent Aggravated Burglary. The man was arrested and has been booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of Aggravated Burglary and Obstruction of the Legal Process. Currently there only appears to be one count of Aggravated Burglary and Police continue to investigate whether or not the same suspect was involved in the earlier burglary of the address near W 4th Street and McDonald Drive.

Kanwaka Township Fire responded on a small grass fire this morning near the 400 block of US Highway 40. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters. No damage was reported to any structures.

Lawrence Fire crews responded to investigate the odor of what the caller believed to be natural gas, in the area of 31st Street and Ousdahl Road just after 7:40 a.m.. The Fire Department also reported an odor in the area of the Walmart, 3300 Iowa Street. Shortly after the call was dispatched, Emergency Dispatchers received a call from Southern Star who reported they were "venting mercaptan" in the 1900 block of W 31st Street on H Street. Lawrence Fire responded to that area to make contact with the utility workers, who reported that the venting would continue for approximately 30 minutes. Firefighters cleared from that scene before 8 a.m..

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

A busy morning for Lawrence Firefighters and Police.

At 2:27 a.m., firefighters were dispatched on a dumpster fire in an alleyway near 13th and Vermont Streets. At 3:35 a.m., an additional fire crew was dispatched to a dumpster fire in an alley near 12th and Tennessee Streets, about three blocks from the first fire. Lawrence Police and at least one KUPD officer saturated the area looking for anyone on foot, suspecting arson was involved with the fires. Officers conducted two pedestrian checks, no arrests related to the fires were reported.

Firefighters were called on a third dumpster fire just before 6 a.m. at a business in the 3000 block of Iowa Street. Dispatchers reported receiving two calls about the fire. One of those callers reported that the dumpster was about four feet from the side of the building. The second caller reported that the building was evacuated and flames were reaching higher than the building's roof. A full alarm structure fire assignment was dispatched and arriving crews reported a "large dumpster fully involved." Those crews were able to very quickly determine that the fire had not extended to the building itself. The fire was knocked down and reported to be under control within 15 minutes. There were no reports of damage to the nearby building and no injuries were reported.

Police also responded on two non-injury accidents. The first was reported in the 2200 block of Yale Road at 2:50 a.m.. The second was reported in the 3000 block of Kasold Drive at 4:30 a.m.

Officers responded on a residential burglary in the neighborhood west of Monterey Way and Harvard Road. The caller reported that no one was home when the burglary occurred.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Just before 2:30 a.m., Lawrence Police responded to both of the Wal-Mart stores in town after both reported receiving threats. There were not many details aired over the radios, other than to say that the caller was a male in both phone calls. Dispatchers also indicated that one of the callers was reported to possibly be "mental". There was no indication as to whether or not it was the same caller to both stores, The first call to the Wal-Mart store at 550 Convressional Drive was dispatched to officers at 2:27 a.m.. The second call was dispatched at 2:29 a.m., to the Wal-Mart store at 3300 Iowa Street. It did not sound as though any special precautions were taken at either location. As of this report, no other details were available. Check back with the Lawrence Journal-World later this morning for additional information, should there be anything to report.

Elsewhere this morning, in Leavenworth, Kansas, the Wal-Mart at 5000 10th Avenue also received a telephone threat just before 4 a.m.. Officers quickly responded and were able to report the scene "clear" as of 4:30 a.m.. Again, no further details were immediately available.

Back in Lawrence, Police also responded on three reported disturbances, and two fireworks complaints. No serious injuries were reported.

At 5:20 a.m., Officers were called to the area of W 28th Street and Kasold Drive on reports of a Prowler. The caller only reported that it was believe a subject was possibly in the backyard, "looking into windows." There were no reports of any damage or of anything taken from the property.

Lawrence firefighters were kept pretty active this morning.

Around 1:45 a.m., crews were called to an address in the 2300 block of Ridge Court on a report of a fire alarm sounding and reports of smoke. After making access to the building's basement firefighters determined the alarm was set off after someone used a fire extinguisher. The structure fire response was cancelled with only one fire unit remaining on scene to reset the alarm.

Around 2 a.m., one fire crew was dispatched to investigate a fire alarm sounding at an address in the 2300 block of Packer Road, north of the Turnpike. Shortly after arriving on that scene the crew requested the incident be upgraded to a structure fire response. Several of the units were already out of the station due to the earlier structure fire call and were able to quickly go responding. Initial reports from employees was of a fire in the warehouse. By 2:26 a.m., firefighters reported the structure to be "all clear" and that all employees were accounted for. The fire was reported to be under control at 2:34 a.m.. There were no reports of any injuries and no reports of anything even being visible from outside of the building.

Lawrence Police responded on several disturbances this morning. One of which was reported to have involved up to 20 people fighting. None of the disturbances were reported to have resulted in any serious injuries.

Lawrence Police conducted just almost 10 vehicle stops this morning.

Officers responded on what was reported to be a possible prowler. The caller reported an unknown subject looking into a window of their home. The subject was last seen running away from the address. Police only seemed to have a vague description of the man.

Eudora Police conducted a vehicle stop on K-10 near mile marker 13 before 3 a.m.. Police found that the license plate on the vehicle had been altered and the driver was also driving while suspended. The driver was arrested on charges for both offenses.

Shortly before 4 a.m., Officers received information on a non-injury accident in the 1500 block of Kentucky.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Around 1:40 this morning, Police were called to the 2300 block of W 26th Street after a report of two males breaking windows of vehicles and stealing items from inside. Officers arrived about a minute after being dispatched. A few seconds later officers reported two males running through the parking lot. Both men were captured and taken into custody about two minutes later. It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were broken into and/or damaged in the incident.

One accident was reported this morning around 7:40 a.m., in the 200 block of N Iowa Street. Police arrived on scene of what was believed to be a non-injury accident, when asked if they would like Fire/Medical to respond, one of the involved requested a medic unit. Medics responded to the scene around 7:50 a.m., no serious injuries were reported.

Fireworks complaints were the most common calls this morning throughout Lawrence. The earliest that I heard was just after I began listening at 1:30 a.m.. The most last was reported just before 4:15 a.m.. In all Police responded on four complaints regarding fireworks, two of those were initially reported to be gunshots. Officers determined that all were nothing more than fireworks.

After 2 a.m., Police responded on two disturbances, one of which was reported to be domestic related and resulted in an arrest.

Police handled at least two noise complaints. One was said to be loud music, the other was a loud party.

Officers also responded on three medical emergencies with LDCFM.

Douglas County Deputies conducted two vehicle stops with the assistance of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Both were suspected intoxicated drivers called in by other motorists. Deputies were able to catch up with both vehicles and none of the drivers were found to be intoxicated.

Pretty quiet this morning in Douglas County.

Police in Lawrence conducted three vehicle stops.

Most of this morning was fairly quiet in Lawrence. Officers responded on a fireworks complaint in the 900 block of Rhode Island Street at 2:15 a.m.. Police also received information on a drug complaint and responded on one disturbance reported to involve weapons. No arrests or serious injuries were reported.

Just outside of Douglas County, Tonganoxie firefighters battled a fully involved residential fire just after 5:30 a.m.. Police reported the rear of the home was fully involved with fire. Firefighters from Tonganoxie and several surrounding Township Fire Departments were able to report the fire to be under control as of about 6:15 a.m.. Back in Douglas County, Lawrence Fire/Medical are currently (as of 8:10 a.m.) on scene at McCollum Laboratories, 2095 Constant Avenue, on what began as a fire alarm. One fire crew responded and reported light smoke inside the one-story building. A full alarm assignment was added to the call shortly before 8 a.m.. Crews inside the building believe the smoke to be coming from a HVAC related issue. There has not been any confirmation of a working fire at this time. A Haz-Mat crew is also standing by at the scene as a precaution. KUPD has blocked several streets in the area, which are blocked by LDCFM vehicles and apparatus. It did not sound like anyone was inside the building at the time of the initial fire alarm.
