August 24th Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

Lawrence Police set up a perimeter this morning in the area of 19th Street and Naismith Drive for a subject involved in what sounded like, at the very least, an aggravated burglary. A woman reportedly awoke to find a man in her home. The man left and Police were called. There are a bunch of details surrounding this incident that are not completely clear and I have notified my partners at the Journal-World of these details. They will be checking on those and working to confirm them. I am sure there will be a story up on the website if there is anything worthy of reporting. I don't want to spread rumors or speculation of something that I am not confident of it's accuracy.

Around 3:30 a.m., Westar was showing approximately 130 customers without electricity in the area of Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive. There was no word on the cause of the outage. As of 9:30 a.m., outage numbers are down to only two in Douglas County.

Lawrence Police conducted several vehicle stops. Three of those stops resulting in arrests. Two arrest for OUI related offenses and the third was for no proof of insurance.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

A little bit more activity this morning in Lawrence.

Police conducted five vehicle stops and cited at least seven parking violations. One of the vehicle stops reportedly involved an arrest for a subject driving without a valid driver's license.

Only one disturbance this morning, nothing that resulted in any arrests or serious injuries.

Officers responded on a report of a subject being chased by a "vicious" dog in the 2200 block of Lake Pointe Drive, just before 6:30 a.m.. The subject that was being chased was able to get into an apartment and away from the dog just prior to Police arriving on scene. Officers did not report any injuries to the subject and medics were not requested to the scene.

August 20th Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

After a Sunday morning filled with internet connectivity issues, thanks to a neighbor's tree taking down the service line to my home, the blog is back.

Sunday morning was mostly quiet, considering it was following the first Saturday night since the majority of students had moved back into town. A few alcohol violations, minor in possession, and open container violations, along with the usual indecent exposure citations for urinating in public. None of Sunday morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Also, I am sure the Journal-World will have more on Saturday night into Sunday morning's check lane and saturation patrol as soon as full results are made available from Law Enforcement.

As for this morning, things were almost abnormally calm throughout the county.

Lawrence Police responded on two disturbances. Officers also conducted four vehicle stops and cited numerous parking violations.

At 7:40 a.m., Police were called to an address in the 1700 block of Mississippi after receiving a report of an intoxicated female who had possibly forced her way into a residence. Officers arrived quickly and found a man and woman, both reported to be intoxicated, on a porch. The female was eventually taken into custody for trespassing and criminal damage to property. The criminal damage charge is believed to be related to damage done to a screen when the woman was making her entry into the residence.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Not a whole lot of activity this morning considering it was the first overnight with the KU residence halls open.

Officers in Lawrence responded on six disturbances this morning. Two of those were reported to be domestic related and were not reported until after 3 a.m., and both resulted in Domestic Battery arrests. The other disturbances seemed to occur in the normal late night/early morning spots, most within a few blocks of Mass Street.

Police checked on two reports of gunshots heard. The first report was in the 3000 block of Bob Billings Parkway around 2:40 a.m.. The second was reported shortly before 3 a.m., in the 500 block of Eldridge Drive.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

August 17th Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

Not too far outside of Douglas County, firefighters just outside of Tonganoxie responded on a report of a house fire just before 2 a.m.. A man and his daughter reportedly awoke to a barking dog, to find a fire in the basement of the home at 20356 Parallel Road. Both people were able to escape from the house and call for help from a neighbors home. Firefighters arrived to find flames visible through windows. Initial reports indicate that the fire was believed to have been sparked by an electrical issue in the home's basement. The State Fire Marshal's office is on scene investigating this morning.

Back in Lawrence, Police investigated a couple nuisance complaints, disturbances and conducted several vehicle stops.

Officers made three arrests this morning for trespassing. The first two occurred around 2:15 a.m. in the 2500 block of W 31st Street. The third arrest occurred around 6:45 a.m. after an unknown man walked into an apartment in the 1300 block of W 24th Street. The man reportedly helped himself to one of the bedrooms and laid in the bed. He was quickly arrested. It was not immediately clear if the door was left open, unlocked or why it was so easy for the man to simply walk in.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., Police and Fire/Medical responded on a report of a structure fire in the 5000 block of Clinton Parkway. The caller told emergency dispatchers that there was a smoke odor and the building's fire alarm was sounding. Firefighters arrived to report nothing showing from the exterior of the building. Upon further investigation the source of the odor was determined to be burning food. Medics evaluated one person on the scene, inside the apartment where the burning food was found. No one was reported to have been transported by medics from the scene.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Lawrence Police conducted three vehicle stops this morning, one resulting in an OUI related arrest.

At 3:40 a.m., Police were called to a North Lawrence gas station where a man was reporting that he had been the victim of a robbery. The man reported that he had been robbed by a cab driver after receiving a ride from Topeka to Lawrence. The man claiming to be the victim said that the cab driver left before allowing him to collect personal belongings from the cab's trunk. One of those stolen personal items, the man claimed, was a backpack containing $20,000. At the request of officers on the scene, Dispatchers contacted the cab company to get the cab driver to return to the scene. The cab company reported that the man, now claiming to be a victim, had not paid for his cab ride and the cab driver was already most of the way back to Topeka. Eventually the cab driver returned to the scene in Lawrence and the man who made the claim of being the victim was taken into Police custody. That man has been booked into the Douglas County Jail where he faces charges of Criminal Damage to Property and Theft of Service. It was unclear if any of the man's belongings were ever in the trunk of the cab or if he ever had a backpack containing $20,000.

Officers also reported making an arrest for Domestic Battery shortly before 4 a.m..

As of this report (8:15 a.m.) Police and Fire/Medical are on scene of a possible hazardous material recovery at Burcham Park, 200 Indiana Street after an officer located a "1ft x 1ft white cooler with a lot of duct tape on it and a substance leaking from it." Crews are securing a perimeter and awaiting the arrival of a hazardous material team. No other information was immediately available regarding this incident.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Not a whole lot activity this morning, other that routine activity for when students have returned to Lawrence. Officers responded on at least four noise complaints.

At 3:57 a.m., Police were called to the area of W 22nd and Ousdahl for a subject who had a cab drive him home but, bailed out before he payed the fare. The cab driver called 911 and followed the man until Police could arrive. Officers caught up with the man about two blocks away, where he was taken into custody for Theft of Services.

At 4:45 a.m., Police were called to a reported disturbance with weapons in the 1600 block of E 21st Terrace. The caller reported that her ex-husband was outside of her house with a baseball bat. Officers arrived quickly and no arrests or injuries were reported.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.
