September 1st Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

A busy morning for Law Enforcement across the area.

Lawrence Police were called to investigate a strong armed robbery around 1:20 this morning in the 1100 block of Tennessee Street. This occurred shortly before I began monitoring this morning, so I do not have the full story or many details. Police established a perimeter and searched for more than an hour. As of this report, no arrests have been recorded.

Officers were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Ohio Street around 2:20. As Officers were arriving at the scene, one man decided to run from Police. Officers caught up with that man near the intersection of 11th and Ohio. He was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of Disorderly Conduct and Interference with the Duties of an Officer.

At 2:30 Lawrence Police and Fire/Medical were called to the area of Bob Billings Parkway and Medinah Road for a single vehicle, rollover accident. Police arrived on scene quickly and confirmed that the driver was not injured but, would need to be extricated from the vehicle by the Fire Department. Lawrence Fire arrived at the scene to report one vehicle overturned off of the roadway. The driver was extricated after about five minutes of work. There was no immediate word whether or not alcohol was involved in the accident.

Around 5:30, Police were called to the HyVee near Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive for a subject who appeared intoxicated and was breaking things incident the store. Employees attempted to detain the man and he "became physical" according to scanner traffic. Officers caught up with the man, just east of the building a few minutes later. A medic unit was called to the scene and transported the intoxicated male to LMH for treatment. It seemed officers believed the man to be under the influence of narcotics. Officers also reported that they had the man "in custody." As of this report, the man has not been booked into the County Jail.

At 6:19, Lawrence Fire was dispatched to check on a possible blown transformer near the intersection of Michigan Street and Michigan Way in north Lawrence. The fire crew arrived on scene to report a small fire on the utility pole and requested Westar respond to the scene. After more than five minutes of trying, an emergency dispatcher informed the fire unit that dispatchers were not getting any answer from Westar on the emergency line. The fire crew cleared the scene around 6:40, still reporting a small fire on the utility pole near the transformer. At that time, Westar's website was showing only one customer without electricity.

As of 8:50, Westar's website shows approximately 90 customers without electricity in Lawrence.

Officers responded on at least five non-injury accidents throughout Lawrence during my listening hours of 2-5a.m..

Also this morning, Police in the city of Leavenworth are investigating after a residential burglary. An area wide "Attempt To Locate" broadcast was put out to surrounding agencies, including Douglas County for the incident. That broadcast reported that unknown suspect or suspects burglarized a residence in Leavenworth. During that burglary the suspect, or suspects, walked away with nine guns and five boxes of ammunition. There was no word on what types of guns were taken. Again, there was no information on the suspect or a possible suspect vehicle involved in the incident.

August 31st Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

KUPD reported making a OUI related arrest shortly after 2 a.m., near the intersection of 23rd and Ousdahl Road.

Officers in Lawrence were called to the intersection of 11th and Tennessee Street at 3:43 this morning for a report of two male subjects who were seen throwing empty kegs at passing vehicles, damaging one of the vehicles. Police located the two men quickly, both were arrested and face charges of Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Damage to Property.

At 6:55 a.m., Emergency crews from Eudora and Lawrence were dispatched on a single vehicle accident at the intersection of N 1000 Road and E 2000 Road, southwest of Eudora. A Police Officer was the first to arrive on scene and report the vehicle had rolled onto it's top, pinning the driver's arm under the vehicle. That officer also reported the driver to be in critical condition. LDCFM rescue crews worked for about 15 minutes to free the driver from the crashed vehicle. A LifeStar helicopter was dispatched and responded to the scene however, after landing the helicopter was disregarded. The injured person was transported by a LDCFM Medic unit to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. No other information regarding the driver or the accident was immediately available. I contacted my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World to inform them of this story, that report can be found here.

At 7:50 a.m., Lawrence Police were called to the 1000 block of N 3rd Street to take a report on a non-injury hit and run accident. The victim was able to give police a vehicle description and license plate number. As of this report, it did not sound like officers have located the suspect vehicle.

Lawrence Police reported making two arrests just after midnight following the attempted robbery of two people in a parking lot at The Reserve apartment complex, in the 2500 block of W 31st Street. Most officers attached to the call, returned to service once they learned it was a family member. The call was downgraded to a trespassing and no arrests were reported.

Also this morning, Eudora Police were investigating several self storage unit burglaries in the 500 block of E 15th Street. There was not an exact number of units given over the radio. However, the officer was out at that scene for nearly an hour.

Fairly calm this morning throughout Douglas County.

Lawrence Police conducted a few vehicle stops, with one resulting in an arrest. That arrest was reportedly related to an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in district court.

Officers also responded on one noise complaint and a report of suspicious activity. The suspicious activity was reported around 3:40 a.m., in a neighborhood near W 6th Street and Folks Road. A caller reported an unknown person walking door to door, turning door knobs. Multiple officers responded and checked the area. Police did not report making contact with anyone acting suspicious in that area.

Most things quieted down this morning in Lawrence.

Officers responded on one disturbance, and two reported burglaries. There was little information available regarding either reported burglary, one did sound like it was to a vehicle. That was really all there was this morning.

Around 1:27 a.m., Lawrence Police and Fire/Medical were called to an address in the 1600 block of Tennessee Street on reports of a person struck by a vehicle. Police arrived on scene quickly and reported a male with critical injuries. Medics arrived on scene and almost immediately requested that dispatchers check on the availability of a LifeStar Helicopter and of the University of Kansas Medical Center to accept a critical trauma. LifeStar was unable to fly due to weather in the area, and KUMC reported they were able to accept the patient. The man was transported by ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

A driver involved in the accident was reported to be detained by Police and transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for a blood draw. As of this report, it is unclear if that driver has received any citations or faces any charges. There is also no update on the victim's status available. A report on the accident can be found here from the Lawrence Journal-World.

At 2:07 a.m., Police were called to the area of the East Hills Business Park on a report of a subject firing a gun from a vehicle. As officers were responding on the call, dispatchers learned that the incident occurred approximately 30 minutes before anyone had call 911 to report it. The caller only provided dispatchers with a very vague description of the vehicle involved. No injuries or damage were reported.

Fire/Medical was dispatched on a fire alarm at Ellsworth Hall on the University of Kansas campus shortly before 4:30 a.m.. Dispatchers reported receiving alarms from two separate rooms. KUPD located burnt macaroni and cheese in one of the rooms and firefighters confirmed that was the source of the alarm. Many residents were evacuated from the building while firefighters were on scene. Everyone was allowed back into the building a short time later.

August 24th Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

Lawrence Police set up a perimeter this morning in the area of 19th Street and Naismith Drive for a subject involved in what sounded like, at the very least, an aggravated burglary. A woman reportedly awoke to find a man in her home. The man left and Police were called. There are a bunch of details surrounding this incident that are not completely clear and I have notified my partners at the Journal-World of these details. They will be checking on those and working to confirm them. I am sure there will be a story up on the website if there is anything worthy of reporting. I don't want to spread rumors or speculation of something that I am not confident of it's accuracy.

Around 3:30 a.m., Westar was showing approximately 130 customers without electricity in the area of Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive. There was no word on the cause of the outage. As of 9:30 a.m., outage numbers are down to only two in Douglas County.

Lawrence Police conducted several vehicle stops. Three of those stops resulting in arrests. Two arrest for OUI related offenses and the third was for no proof of insurance.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.
