At 11:30 p.m., a Lawrence Police Officer attempted to stop a vehicle which was traveling westbound on Clinton Parkway. The vehicle failed to yield to the officer, who then gave chase. Officers reported the suspect vehicle was westbound on Clinton Parkway at nearly 70 miles per hour. The chase then turned southbound on Wakarusa, and then westbound on Stoneback Drive, ending in a cul-de-sac. The male driver ran from the vehicle through a backyard in the 4900 block of Stoneback Drive and then into a wooded area between Clinton Parkway and the South Lawrence Trafficway (K-10 bypass). Officers set up a perimeter in the area to search for the man, who officers had already identified. The suspect was said to have a warrant for his arrest. Officers eventually caught up with the man, who now faces a number of additional charges. In addition to the outstanding Municipal Warrant, new charges include; Possession of a Controlled Substance, Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Criminal Carrying of a Weapon (concealed), and Criminal Disposal of Explosives. No injuries were reported and no other details were immediately available.

Around 3 a.m., the Kansas Highway Patrol made an arrest, near milemarker 199 on westbound Interstate 70. That driver now faces charges including; Driving While Suspended, Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal of Test, and Open Container.

At 3:59, Lawrence Police were called to the 1600 block of Haskell Avenue on a reported burglary. The caller reported that someone had entered the residence through a back window or door, stolen a computer, and then fled out of the same rear door or window. The resident reported the incident occurred approximately five minutes before Police were called. As no one saw the burglar, there was no description available.

At 4:01, a resident in the 2300 block of Murphy Drive reported two juveniles who were "acting suspicious" in the hallway of an apartment building. Officers responded and eventually sent the two on their way.

At 4:02, Officers were called to the 700 block of Michigan on a report of three gunshots heard in the area. The caller believed the shots had come from east of Michigan Street. Four officers responded and checked the area. It was unclear if officers located anyone in the area.

Most things have been fairly calm in Douglas County the last few mornings.

This morning, Police and Fire Medical crews were called to 2413 Ousdahl Road at 7:20 a.m., on reports of a possible structure fire. A caller told dispatchers a "trash bag" was on fire in the laundry room of the building. Crews arrived on the scene quickly and extinguished the fire. Four officers responded to the area of the call. No injuries were reported. The fire remains under investigation.

From 1:50-5 a.m., Lawrence Police responded on a total of six disturbances. No arrests or serious injuries were reported.

In the same time span, Law Enforcement in the county recorded four OUI/DWI arrests. One arrest each for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Lawrence Police, while the Kansas Highway Patrol recorded two DWI related arrests on Interstate 70.

At 3:46, Police in Lawrence along with Fire Medical crews responded on another suspicious fire inside an occupied apartment building. This time the address was 1703 W. 24th Street. Dispatchers reported receiving several 911 calls, one of them reporting a "bag of chips" on fire outside of the door of her third floor apartment. More than five patrol officers responded on the call and quickly reported that the fire was extinguished prior to their arrival. Police and firefighters secured the scene of the fire until fire investigators could arrive. The fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

This morning's fire would appear to be the latest in a recent string of suspicious fires, all in the same general area of Lawrence apartment complexes. As of this report, there is no official confirmation as to the cause of the fire. A Lawrence Journal-World report on the earlier fires can be found here.

Police also responded on a report of a rock thrown through an apartment window in the 2100 block of Bob Billings Parkway. There was no description a suspect available.

Lawrence Police were called to the intersection of 23rd Street and Massachusetts Street at 3:49 for a single vehicle accident. The vehicle reportedly struck a utility pole in the area. Police confirmed no one was injured and there was no need for Fire Medical crews to respond to the scene. Officers did report that there appeared to be a power outage in the area.

At 3:52 a.m., Police were called to an address in the 2200 block of Harper on a possible aggravated burglary. A caller reported that he believed someone had entered his home through a backdoor. The subject didn't stick around and left through the same door. The caller told Dispatchers that he, the resident, had armed himself with a knife and was in a bedroom with one of his two children. Four officers checked the area and did not report locating anyone in the area. It sounded as though Officers believe the resident heard the car accident and thought it was someone inside his home.

The power outage knocked power out for 1,270 customers at its peak, at 5:30 this morning. Service was restored to all customers shortly after 6 a.m.. A map of the outages and a few other details regarding the outage can be found here from a report filed this morning by Operation 100 News.

At 4:57 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to 1018 W 24th Street on a report of a fire in the laundry room. Eight officers responded to the area of the call. The first arriving officer reported heavy smoke from the building, which was keeping him from being able to safely enter. Fire crews quickly located and extinguished a fire in the basement of the building. The area of the fire was secured with fire line tape until an investigator could arrive. There was no immediate word whether or not this fire was accidental or possibly another suspected arson. No injuries were reported.

Lawrence Police responded to the 500 block of Eldridge Street on reports of possible auto burglaries occurring in the area. A witness reported two subjects looking at parked vehicles in the area. Those subjects were said to have ran eastbound, towards HyVee, prior to Police arriving in the area. No damage was reported.

Just before 4 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to 2350 Ridge Court on a possible structure fire. Dispatchers said they received multiple calls reporting fire on the third floor of the apartment building. One caller reported several books on fire in a hallway, while another reported it was toys on fire in the hallway. Police made access to the third floor and reported heavy smoke. Fire Medical crews arrived a short time later and quickly located and extinguished the fire. The fire was believed to have been intentionally set. No injuries were reported.

Lawrence Police responded on four disturbances this morning, none of which were reported to involve any serious injuries or arrests.

Fire Medical crews responded on a possible structure fire this morning at 3:13. Crews were called to the 1500 block of W 24th Street after someone reported a newspaper on fire in a stairwell. Police and firefighters arrived to report that the fire had been extinguished. One fire crew reported witnessing a male dressed in dark clothing running from the scene as they were arriving. Officers checked the area and did not report locating anyone matching the given description.

At 3:31, Fire Medical crews were to an apartment in the 400 block of California Street to investigate a Carbon Monoxide alarm sounding, one person was also reporting feeling ill, possibly related to elevated levels of Carbon Monoxide. Crews reported "all clear and under control" about eight minutes at the scene. No one was transported from that scene by Medics.

Firefighters were kept busy this morning in Lawrence.

Just after 3, Fire Medical crews were called to investigate a fire alarm sounding at McCollum Hall, 1800 Engel Road on Daisy Hill. KUPD reported "heavy smoke" on the 9th floor with alarms sounding. Fire crews reported nothing visible from the exterior of the 10-story building upon their arrival. After firefighters reported a "light haze" on the top five floors of the building, sixth and above. Incident command requested a second alarm response ordered at 3:17 a.m., for additional crews. A Medic crew making access to the upper floors of the building reported locating a "burned heater" in the center stairwell on the 6th floor at 3:31 a.m.. By 3:40 a.m., crews were confirming that the source of the haze was the "overheated heater unit" in the 6th floor stairwell. Fire crews began monitoring Carbon Monoxide levels in the building and ventilating the haze before allowing residents to return to their rooms. All residents were allowed to return to their rooms around 4:30 a.m.. There were no reports of injuries and no serious damage to the building.

At 6:19, One fire unit was dispatched to the 1600 block of Tennessee Street to investigating a smoke odor in the area. That unit reported a "visible haze" in the area and after searching the area, located a small campfire in a backyard.

At 6:20, Lawrence Fire crews were dispatched on a possible structure fire in the 2300 block of Ridge Court. Two people had called 911 reporting smoke detectors sounding with no visible smoke or fire. Initially only one fire unit was dispatched but, at the request of a responding Division Chief, the response was upgraded to a full structure fire alarm. One unit continued to the scene with an emergency response, while all others responded non-emergency. The first unit to arrive reported nothing visible from the three story apartment building. After about three minutes that crew reported an obvious "burnt food odor". All other units were allowed to clear from the call at 6:31 after the fire alarm was reset.

Lawrence Police conducted several vehicle stops this morning, one resulting in a DWI arrest.

Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews were dispatched to an address in the 2400 block of Redbud Lane on a report of a structure fire at 3:58 this morning. Dispatchers reported two callers, one reporting smoke visible with smoke alarms sounding and the second reported a "piece of paper on fire". The caller who reported the burning piece of paper told dispatchers that the paper had been "thrown out of a window". Fire units continued to an emergency response to the scene. Crews reported nothing visible upon arrival and declared "all clear and under control" at 4:07 a.m.. According to scanner traffic, the incident is being investigated as an arson. There were no immediate reports of damage.

At 4:40 a.m. two officers responded on a burglary alarm on a business in the 1500 block of W 6th Street. Those officers located an exterior door standing open and requested additional units to the area to assist in clearing the building's interior. Officers cleared the building and it did not sound as though anyone was located inside. It is unclear, to me at least, if there was a burglary or simply an unlocked door blown open by the wind.

Eudora Police reported locating an open window at Eudora United Methodist Church, 2084 N 1300 Road around 2:20 this morning. Several Douglas County Deputies assisted with surrounding the building and then clearing the interior. There were no reports of any arrests or damage. It is unclear whether or not anyone entered the building through the open window. Law Enforcement remained at that scene until nearly 3:30.

Lawrence Police were called to an address in the 1200 block of Summit Street at 4:09 for a reported physical disturbance between two females. Officers arrived and broke up the fight. One of the women was arrested and faces a Battery charge. The other woman was treated for some minor injuries at the scene, she was not transported by Medics.

Officers in Lawrence also responded on two incidents involving children this morning. The first was reported as officers were leaving the scene on of the Summit Street incident. The child was said to be "in need of care" according to radio traffic. Four officers were involved in the call which was in the 1300 block of Summit Street.

The second child related call was in the 2000 block of Heatherwood Drive at 7:06 this morning for a child "out of control". From radio traffic it sounded like the juvenile was trying to avoid going to school this morning. No other details were available.

Around 7:50 this morning, fire crews were called to the 2200 block of W 26th Street for a report of a kitchen fire inside a second floor apartment. Arriving fire crews reported visible smoke and flames from the building. Firefighters initially attacked the fire from inside the building and then briefly were ordered outside and battled defensively. The fire was knocked down in about 30 minutes. One occupant was treated by medics at the scene, those injuries were not said to be serious and the person was not transported from the scene. At 3:27, Lawrence Police were called to a sorority in the 1100 block of Indiana Street after one of the residents reported a man inside the building. Dispatchers reported that all of the residents had moved into the house mom's room and had locked the door. Officers arrived and reported locating an unsecured door on one side of the building. Police cleared all three floors of the building, while other Officers checked the surrounding area for anyone on foot. The search of the building did not locate anyone who was not supposed to be there. Officers checking the area reported checking on two pedestrians, neither was believed to have been related to the burglary. The suspect was only described as a white male. An officer at the scene was assigned to "process" the door that was found unsecured. No other details are currently available.

At 5:47, Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews were dispatched to 312 Bowstring Drive on a report of a fire alarm with visible smoke. Police arrived to report flames visible from one side of the second level. Firefighters located fire on the second floor of the two story home. The fire was quickly knocked down and while conducting searches of the residence, crews reported locating and rescuing two cats.
