Several area fire departments have responded to a reported structure fire in Baldwin City this morning.

The call was dispatched as a possible structure fire at the intersection of 9th Street and High Street just before 1:35 Saturday morning. Responding firefighters reported flames visible on their approach. Medics arrived to confirm that the two story structure was fully involved.

Fire crews forced their way through a front door where they found a man sleeping on a couch. That man told firefighters that he was the only person at home. The man was checked out by medics at the scene and released.

Firefighters reported a partial collapse of the structure at 2:40 a.m.. At that time crews continued to battle the fire.

Incident command has requested the Red Cross be notified for one resident who was displaced. The Kansas State Fire Marshal Office has also been requested to respond to investigate the cause of the fire.

Baldwin City Fire is receiving assistance from Palmyra Township Fire, Wellsville Fire (Franklin County), and Willow Springs Township Fire. All mutual aid fire crews were released from the scene shortly after 4 a.m.. Baldwin City firefighters remained on the scene to watch for hot spots.

No injuries were reported.

Lawrence police conducted more than 10 vehicle stops between midnight and 5 a.m.. Those stops resulted in four arrests, three for OUI related offenses and one for driving without a valid driver's license.

Douglas County deputies recorded one DWI related arrest, the same arrested person also faces a charge for not having proof of liability insurance.

Other police activity in Lawrence included;

• 11 Disturbances
• 3 Trespassing complaints
• 3 Noise complaints
• 2 Non-injury accident
• 1 Strong-arm robbery

Nearly all of the disturbance calls were between midnight and 2:30 a.m., only two disturbances were reported after that. Five of the disturbance calls occurred in downtown along Massachusetts Street. Two of the larger disturbances on Mass Street occurred about 10 minutes apart and less than half a block from each other. Both of the larger fights occurred in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street. The first was outside of Buffalo Wild Wings and the second in front of the Granada, both were said to have involved 6-10 people. There was a report of one person involved possibly having suffered a broken nose however, it did not appear that officers made contact with anyone having such an injury. Medics were not requested to respond on any of the disturbances and no serious injuries were reported.

At 2:11 a.m., officers wrapping up their response on one disturbance were informed of a hit and run accident which had occurred about a block away in the 900 block of Massachusetts Street. A Chevrolet SUV was reported to have fled from the scene, there was no description of the driver. As of this report it does not appear that officers have made contact with that driver.

Just after the information was given on the hit and run, officers were being informed of a strong-arm robbery which had occurred in the 800 block of Massachusetts Street. The victim reported being approached and robbed by two men. The men were only described as a white male and a black male who were last seen running from the area, possibly to the west. The victim did not report any injuries. As of this report, no arrests have been recorded.

KU Police were called to the 600 block of Sunnyside Avenue around 2:20 a.m. after a caller reported a vehicle found crashed in the roadway. Officers arrived to report a red Honda CRV was laying on its side with no signs of a driver. Lawrence Police also responded to the scene. The driver was located and arrested about 30 minutes later. He faces charges for failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident with damage to vehicle/property and no insurance.

Two of the trespassing calls this morning involved unknown subjects trying to enter Greek houses.

The first was reported about 2:30 a.m. and involved a man in a red coat who was knocking and possibly trying to open the front door of the Kappa Kappa Gamma house at 1 Gower Place. After no one answered the door, the man made his way to the rear of the house, before disappearing from sight towards the Chancellor's residence just to the west. KU Police checked the area of the Chancellor's residence and did not report locating anyone in the area.

The second trespassing complaint was at the Alpha Chi Omega house at 1500 Sigma Nu Place around 4:15 a.m.. This time the trespasser was said to be an unknown woman in a black skirt. Again the unknown person tried to open the front door before she made her way to the back of the building and tried a different door. Officers checked the area and did not report locating anyone matching the description in the area.

Lawrence police were in the area of the 2100 block of Ohio at 3:21 a.m., after a cab driver reported being battered by a fare. The suspect, only described as a male fled on foot in an unknown direction. The driver's injuries were did not sound serious, as medics were not requested.

At 3:28 a.m., a Mil-Spec security officer reported a possible structure fire at 2411 Louisiana Street, building E. The initial report was only of the odor of smoke in the building. After further investigation the security officer was informed that the resident of on apartment had burnt food that she was cooking. Still a full alarm response from Lawrence Fire was dispatched to check and confirm that the incident was only a failed attempt at cooking. Crews arrived on scene at 3:31 to report nothing showing from the three story apartment building. Two minutes later all units were allowed to return to service after one crew had confirmed the burnt food was the source of the smoke odor.

Douglas County deputies rolled up on a fight outside of the Outhouse in the 1800 block of N. 1500 Road, at 3:31 a.m.. Deputies reported several subjects fighting in front of the building. The scuffle was quickly broken up and no injuries or arrests were reported.

At 12:19 a.m., Lawrence Police and Fire were called to the area of W. 26th Street and Redbud Lane after a 911 caller reported a trash can or dumpster on fire near an apartment building. The caller didn't seem to be exactly sure of their location or exactly what was on fire. They were able to tell dispatchers that either a trash can or dumpster was on fire "below" a laundry room. Several police officers and one fire unit descended on the area to look for any signs of fire in the area. The caller gave an address of 1821 W. 26th Street, at that address officers located nothing. Further checking led officers to 2522 Redbud Lane where they reported finding a trash can that had been on fire, it was only smoldering upon their arrival. Firefighters confirmed that the fire was out and appeared to be contained to the one trash can. The police department's call log shows nine units were assigned to the fire call.

The caller on the Redbud Lane incident was said to have disconnected the call when officers began to arrive in the area. Dispatchers attempted to call the subject back but, the subject was not answering any incoming calls. Patrol units and Investigators remained at the scene and in the area until just after 3:30 a.m.. There were no reports of serious damage or injuries.

Just after 2 a.m., Eudora Police responded on a reported residential burglary in the 900 block of Ash Street. The resident reported hearing a rattling from a door, followed by a window being broken. Police did not broadcast any suspect or vehicle descriptions. No injuries were reported. No other details were immediately available.

Back in Lawrence, Police responded on three disturbances, two of which were said to be domestic related. Fire Medical crews responded on two medical emergencies.

None of this morning's activity was reported to have involved any serious injuries.

Around 12:10 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to respond on two automatic fire alarms in an area from near 14th and Alumni Place, north to the 1200 block of Oread Avenue.

As firefighters were responding on those alarms, Lawrence Police were called to the 1500 block of Tennessee Street for a vehicle versus utility pole accident. Firefighters were also called to this scene after receiving a report that the vehicle was catching fire. Police reported that the vehicle was not on fire, only steam but, requested that firefighters continue to check the utility pole. Firefighters arrived to report one vehicle with heavy damage. The driver was not injured. Firefighters reported a fuse on the utility pole had tripped, likely causing the automatic fire alarms to trip in the area. Police arrested the driver, who now faces charges of OUI, No Insurance and Driving without a valid driver's license.

Westar Energy's website only showed one customer without electricity in the area. That service was restored about an hour later.

Just before 2:20 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of N 900 Road, south of Clinton Lake, after dispatchers received a report of eight or nine gunshots heard. The caller believed the shots came from the area to the west. Deputies did not report locating anything in that area.

Saturday, December 22, 2012:

Shortly after 1 a.m., Police were called to the 1200 block of Oread Avenue to receive information on the theft of a vehicle. The caller reported that the vehicle was left running unattended in front of a business when two unknown males drove away in the car. An officer checking the area found the vehicle abandoned in an alley near 14th and Ohio Streets. Police did not have a description of the alleged suspects and no other information was available.

At 1:35 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to 2400 Alabama Street for a reported structure fire. Police arrived on scene just under three minutes later and reported that the fire appeared to be out. Fire Medical crews continued into the scene and confirmed that the fire had been extinguished. Officers did request a Report Number and established a small perimeter for a brief period. There was no information regarding what was on fire, where the fire was in the building or if it was suspicious in nature. No injuries were reported. This address is just under one-quarter of a mile from the area where there have been numerous suspicious fires in occupied apartment buildings. Sunday, December 23, 2012:

At 1:22 a.m. Lawrence Police were called to the 2600 block of Belle Haven Drive on reports of what two callers believed to be gunshots in the area. Three officers checked that area and did not report locating or hearing anything suspicious.

About an hour later, at 2:19 a.m., Police were called to investigate a disturbance involving a man said to be armed with a crowbar at an address in the 1600 block of Lindenwood Lane. Police quickly reported that the scene was stable. No injuries or arrests were reported.

At 1:24 a.m., Lawrence Police and Fire crews were called to 1407 W. 7th Street, Hawks Pointe Apartment Homes. One caller reported "sees smoke and flames from a camera." That person told dispatchers that they were not able to exit the south bedroom. Police arrived and quickly confirmed that the caller had escaped the building through a window. Officers also confirmed there was a working fire in the first floor apartment. Arriving fire crews arrived to report nothing showing from the exterior of the three story building. Further investigation led firefighters to the fire. A second alarm was ordered to respond to the scene at 1:32 a.m.. The incident was reported to be "all clear and under control" at 1:46 a.m.. Medics checked on one person at the scene. There were no reports of serious injuries and medics did not report transporting anyone away from the scene.

Police were called to an address in the 3400 block of Aldrich Street on a report of an attempted burglary. The resident told dispatchers that a subject was attempting to open windows and a door on the town home. Apparently turning on an outdoor light was enough to spook the would be burglar off. Police reported the suspect was only described as a "subject dressed in all black." No reports of damage or anything missing.

At 7 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the intersection of E. 23rd Street and Harper Street on a report of an injury accident. Police arrived about a minute after being dispatched and minor injuries. Fire Medical crews reported two vehicles involved and three people with minor injuries. Medics did not report transporting anyone from that scene.

Lawrence Police responded on four trespassing complaints this morning. Officers also handled three disturbances. None of the activity was said to involve weapons however, one of the disturbances involved several subject "throwing produce" at each other inside a Hy-Vee store. No arrests were reported following any of this activity.

At 4:46 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the 2300 block of W. 26th Street after a caller reported seeing a "flickering" in the hallway of her apartment building. Police arrived quickly and reported there was nothing visible from the exterior of the building. After making contact with the caller, Police determined that the "flickering" was nothing more than a light fixture in the hallway. Fire crews confirmed there was not a fire in the building.

Around 6 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to 1345 Vermont Street on reports of a structure fire. The caller reported smoke coming from a vacant apartment on the second floor of the building. Police arrived and reported seeing flames visible on the north side of the building. Officers attempted to make access to the apartment where the smoke was coming from but, were prevented from doing so due to the smoke conditions. Those officers were able to evacuate everyone from neighboring apartments. Firefighters arrived to report heavy smoke from a second floor window. A second alarm response was ordered for extra manpower at the scene. Crews reported the fire to be knocked down within about 10 minutes. The incident was declared to be under control at 6:20. No injuries were reported.

Lawrence firefighters were called to the Islamic Center of Lawrence, 1917 Naismith Drive, at 5:44 a.m.. A caller reported wiring on the back of the building was burning and her roommate was attempting to extinguish the fire. Firefighters reported the fire was out upon arrival and requested a Fire Investigator to respond to the scene. As of 7:30 this morning, Police remained at that scene.

At 5:50 a.m., firefighters from three area townships were called to a residence at 1298 E. 1600 Road, just outside of Lawrence in Wakarusa Township. The caller reported a chimney fire. First responders from Wakarusa Township were able to extinguish the fire before it could spread to the rest of the house. No injuries were reported.

A busy morning for Lawrence Firefighters.

Crews were called to the 2100 block of Heatherwood Drive at 3:21 a.m. for a reported car fire. Police arrived on the scene to report the vehicle was nearly fully engulfed. As firefighters were working to extinguish the fire, officers learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen. Police setup a perimeter in the area, in an attempt to locate the driver. There was no description available. Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to fully extinguish the fire. Crews used CAFS (Compressed Air and Foam System) to extinguish the fire. No arrests were reported.

Firefighters were dispatched on a reported structure fire at 2345 Ridge Court at 4:01 a.m.. A caller reported that the building was filling with smoke. On arrival, Police reported visible smoke inside the building, began evacuating residents and quickly established a perimeter in the immediate area, thinking the fire was possibly another arson in the area. Firefighters quickly determined that the source of the smoke was an oven fire in one apartment. Police and Fire Investigators interviewed the resident. No injuries were reported.

Before Police could clear their perimeter on the Ridge Court call, another fire call was being dispatched. This time crews were called to the 2700 block of Harrison Place, at 4:19 a.m.. A caller reported seeing "someone lighting something on fire." Again, suspecting a possible arson, Police responded and began establishing a perimeter in the area. Two officers approached the address to investigate the fire. On approach, one of those officers reported "flames visibly reflecting off windows." Those officers located a campfire in the back yard of an address and cleared all other units from their perimeter positions. Fire crews arrived and confirmed that the fire was nothing more than a campfire.

Police also investigated the sound of fireworks in the 800 block of Michigan Street. It was an officer on patrol who reported hearing one loud pop in the nearby area. That officer did not report locating anyone with fireworks in the area.

At 11:48 p.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were dispatched on an injury accident at the intersection of 21st and Heatherwood in Lawrence. Dispatchers reported a subject on a moped struck a dog. There was no word on the seriousness of injuries involved.

Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews were called to 2401 W 25th Street on a reported structure fire at 11:49 p.m.. Police arrived to report fire visible on the floor of a "common area." Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. At least eight officers responded to the area. Several officers remained on scene with fire investigators until shortly after 2 a.m.. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with no indication regarding if this is possibly the latest in the recent string of suspicious fires in the same general area of Lawrence. No injuries were reported.

At 2 a.m., Police were called to the 900 block of Iowa Street to check on a report of gunshots heard in the area. One caller reported hearing five or six gunshots to the north of the area. That caller also reported hearing a "hissing" which he believed was from damaged tires on a tractor trailer that was parked nearby. There were no reports of any damage or injuries.

Officers were called to the 900 block of Illinois Street, just before 2:10, on what the caller believed to be someone attempting to break into her residence. Police arrived and reported that they believed the sounds to be nothing more than the wind.

Officers responded on several alarms, all of which were reported to be related to the gusty winds.

At 4:51 a.m., Police were dispatched to the 2400 block of Ousdahl Road on reports of two subjects loitering around an apartment building. Officers attempted to contact the two subjects, when one of them decided to run. He was taken into custody a short time later and was found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Officers were called to the 2400 block of Kensington Road just after 7 a.m., on a report of traffic sign damaged by a vehicle sometime overnight. There was no information regarding when the accident might have occurred or what vehicle may have been involved.

At 7:56 a.m., Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the intersection of 25th Street and Kasold Drive on an injury accident. Crews arrived to report two vehicles were involved. One person was treated for minor injuries.
