April 15th Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

The predicted severe weather stayed clear of Douglas County this morning. The storm which dropped a tornado on Wichita fizzled out as it moved northeast and passed between Topeka and Lawrence around 1 a.m..

Crews in Lawrence responded on a few pretty minor weather related issues; arcing power lines and branches down. There were a few scattered power outages reported by Westar Energy, nothing significant by any means. As of this report. Westar shows 10,412 customers without power. That number is mostly in Sedgwick county (Wichita) with 9,661. Only two customers currently reported to be without electricity in Douglas County.

Around 2:30 a.m. the last of the seemingly endless streak of severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were all allowed to expire.

Activity for Lawrence Police was fairly normal for an early Sunday morning. A few noise complaints and disturbances. KUPD requested LPD to the area of the Sorority and Fraternity houses after a subject walked into a Sorority house and started taking pictures. The subject was apprehended by the residents of a Fraternity who then notified KUPD. Lawrence Police responded and the pictures were returned. It sounded as though the subject was released at the scene, it was unclear if the individual was cited for the theft.

A Eudora officer caught up with a vehicle which he reported in excess of 80 miles per hour, eastbound on K-10. After clearing that vehicle stop, emergency dispatchers informed the officer of a possible intoxicated driver with a witness following. The vehicle crossed into Johnson County before the officer could make a traffic stop. There was a Johnson County Deputy nearby and he was able to stop the vehicle with the assistance of the Eudora officer. The driver of that vehicle was found to be intoxicated and was arrested by the Johnson County Deputy.

This morning at 10 a.m. a Wind Advisory goes into effect for a large portion of the state, including Douglas County. Winds are expected to be from the south and southwest at around 30 miles per hour with gusts over 45 miles per hour. The advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. this evening. More on this advisory can be found here from the National Weather Service office in Topeka.
