November 26th Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

Things were fairly quiet, for a Saturday morning in Douglas County.

Lawrence Police conducted several vehicle stops, responded on four burglary alarms and a noise complaint.

Just before 4 a.m., Lawrence Police were called to an address in the 500 block of Lake Street. The caller reported a subject walking around a house carrying an ax. This call attracted at least six officers to respond to the area. The call seemed to be unfounded as most of the officers returned to service shortly after first officers arrived. The call was reclassified to a “request to speak with an Officer.”

LDCFM responded to Malott Hall on the KU Campus for multiple fire alarms sounding on the 5th floor, shortly after 7:15 a.m.. By 7:30 Fire crews have encountered a fire in room 5009. A second alarm assignment of crews was ordered at that time. A third alarm assignment was added at 7:50 a.m.. No injuries have been reported at this time. The fire has been declared out. Crews remain on scene investigating.

As of 8:50 a.m., two fire units and two Med-Act units from Johnson County have been requested to respond to the Lawrence Fire Station #2 for a standby. One fire apparatus from the Lenexa Fire Department and another from the Olathe Fire Department have both arrived in Lawrence along with two Med-Act ambulance units. An Olathe Fire Department Battalion Chief along with a Johnson County Med-Act Battalion Chief, also responded to Lawrence to assist. As of noon, Saturday, all of the Johnson County units have been released from their standbys and are returning to Johnson County.

Several other alarms sounded on campus when the sprinkler system was activated at Malott. There have not been any reports of damage at any other buildings. Alarms on sprinkler systems typically activate when there is a change in water pressure. The sprinkler activation at Malott and the Fire Department pumping into the sprinkler system at Malott is believed to have been the cause of the additional alarms. The two other alarms were at Watson Library and Eaton Hall.
