August 14th Overnight Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up

Lawrence Police had an early start to activity last night with a fireworks complaint just after 10 p.m. followed shortly after by a noise complaint and then a battery.

There were surprisingly only four noise complaints overnight, a pretty low number for a Saturday night. Police responded on a number of disturbance and battery calls, nothing that resulted in any serious injuries.

Police conducted about the normal number of a vehicle stops for a weekend night. At least two drivers were tested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Shortly before 4 a.m. emergency dispatchers received a 911 hand up call. LPD officers were sent to the address to investigate. When the first officer arrived she spotted a dumpster that was on fire and requested the Fire Department to respond. While the officer was standing by for the fire to be extinguished, a subject approached her and advised that he was the one responsible for the 911 hang up. That person also said that the 911 call was about the dumpster fire. Arson investigators responded to the scene. No information has been released as to any possible suspects.

Just after 5 a.m. Lawrence Police along with LDCFM were called to respond to the 1100 block of Massachusetts Street on a report of an injury accident. Just as the Fire/Medical was being dispatched the caller changed his mind about being injured and Medics were told to disregard. The Fire Department continued their response to check on a vehicle that was possibly on fire. Police arrived and found an “extremely intoxicated subject” in the street next to one of the vehicles. Fire arrived and advised that there were two vehicles involved with one striking a building, both vehicles were reported to have sustained “moderate” damage. As of 6:15 a.m. Police are still on scene administering a field sobriety test for one of the drivers. The list of charges sounds to be fairly extensive, even before a possible DUI charge.
