My time at Fort Irwin ended quietly on Wednesday. A few early morning interviews preceded my exit from Forward Operating Base King a few minutes before 1 p.m.

Improvisation is the word
Troops I followed on Monday had to make quick decisions to encounter and defend against possible insurgents. That included two who set and tried to detonate improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.And Sunday night my tent almost blew over.

The (real) first day
Here at Fort Irwin, what was once a mock battlefield between American and Soviet forces, depicted by U.S. Army units dedicated to playing the enemy, is now a plot of 1,200 square miles made up to look like Iraq.
