Self was surprised that North Texas beat Texas Tech on Monday. Nothing against North Texas, but Self believes that Texas Tech will be good this year.

Marcus Morris is the best all-around player that Self has coached since he’s been at KU, and maybe ever. He’s a good player. That doesn’t translate to 20 points and 10 rebounds every night, but he can impact the game in many ways. From a total skill set, taking into account all the intangibles, Self hasn’t coached anyone who could do more things.

Self talks to his players about not losing focus early in the season. North Texas did a good job of getting KU’s attention with its win Monday.

The thing KU doesn’t have yet is somebody that really understands what it’s like to have the weight of the program on his shoulders in a late-game situation. Sherron Collins could handle that. When Danny Manning was here, it wasn’t Chris Piper’s fault when KU lost. That goes with the territory with being a team’s best player.

Brady Morningstar can be KU’s emergency point guard, and he’s handled that role pretty well.

Self says there’s a good chance that Elijah Johnson will be back on Friday. Self will check on a few things first.

• Self is really pleased with Tyshawn Taylor. Self is not giddy about any player, because it’s too early, but Taylor is trying really hard. He’s going to take off. He’s worried about making winning plays.

Jeff Withey is doing better. His foot is less sore. The X-rays have come back, and he’s getting better all the time. Self sees no reason that he’s not 100 percent from this point forward. Self knows KU needs a long guy defensively on the back end, and Withey can be that.

Josh Selby should make his teammates better. He’s going to be nervous. Because he’s been held out, the expectations have risen on him. Selby is going to be good, but he shouldn’t be evaluated until January. KU will get better, and it needs another guy that can get his own shot on the perimeter.

Self is hopeful that a decison on Selby happens sooner rather than later, but there is no timeline. Self’s frustration with the situation mostly comes in practice, because the coaches don’t know when he’s going to be back. This has been tough on Selby’s family. Selby will spin this into a positive.

Self says he’s never had a player come in where he felt the player was using Kansas for his own personal interests. It has to be a marriage.

The KU athletic department staff is doing everything it can to help in Selby’s NCAA matter.

If Elijah Johnson plays Friday, he will be KU’s backup point guard. He’s a good player. He’s got to take better care of the basketball.

North Texas is fast. The team has experience knocking off Big 12 teams. North Texas also knocked off Oklahoma State a few years ago.

Self hasn’t talked with his team about the home-court win streak. That shouldn’t be the team’s motivation. Still, the current players should be playing for other former Jayhawks that were part of the streak before them. Self is pretty proud of the streak, though he’d still rather win six games in a row in March and April.

Self says his favorite wins from the home streak were against Texas. KU has had some great wins at home. There were wins when you would have thought KU couldn’t have won without its sixth man. The crowd helped win those games.
