Hi, my name is Douglas County Legal Aid Society.

This agency is considered to be one of United Way’s self-sufficiency organizations (helping families and individuals become financially stable and independent).

DCLAS offers legal assistance. The types of cases handled include domestic relations, municipal court criminal cases, juvenile cases as appointed by the court, landlord/tenant cases, consumer cases and public assistance cases.

There are three full time attorneys and staff assistance of third year law students from the University of Kansas who are supervised by School of Law faculty.

Eligible applicants need to be residents or employees of the county who meet financial guidelines, low income. Cases in Douglas County only. Although there are no fees or dues to use DCLAS services if eligible, filing fees and courts costs are the client’s responsibility.

DCLAS receives funding support from the University of Kansas School of Law, Douglas County United Way, the City of Lawrence and Douglas County.

Assistance is available 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and Friday 9 a.m.-12 p.m. In take process begins with a telephone for an interview. Office: (785) 864-5564.
