¢ James Fowler, a former KU student and member of the Lawrence band the Hefners, now is a chef at an experimental school-lunch cafe in Portland, Ore. His mom taught school, tended a large vegetable garden and cooked honest, country food: pork chops, plum sauce from fruit picked in their yard, “fabulous” creamed potatoes and peas. At least once, she hinted to her oldest son that cooking school might be his path.
