¢ Blanche Bruce, the first black man to serve a full term in the U.S. Senate, is the subject of a new book by Lawrence Otis Graham. In one section, the book recalls Bruce’s flight from Quantrill’s raiders in Lawrence.He later wrote: _”I saw the fighting going on, and the guerrillas rode by without discovering me…. My flight was observed, and several armed men rode furiously toward me… Fortunately, keeping my head underwater I managed to hide, although they came within a few feet of me… I remained concealed in the river all day.”_The book was reviewed over the weekend in the Biloxi Sun-Herald.
