The Senate on Monday approved a bill containing $137 billion in tax breaks for corporations. And there’s a little something for Kansas.Knight-Ridder reports that the bill includes “$247 million over five years to help producers of small jets and planes, 60 percent of which are built in Kansas. Beneficiaries include Lear Jet and Cessna; sponsors (are) Sens. Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts, both Kansas Republicans.”The bill also included a $10 billion buyout for tobacco farmers, according to Knight-Ridder. “It includes tax breaks for Alaskan whalers, natural gas companies, the timber industry, Hollywood filmmakers and cruise-ship companies.”Kansas farmers also got some help from Congress Monday, a share of $2.9 billion in drought and disaster assistance that was tacked on a $11.6 billion hurricane relief package for Florida, according to The Wichita Eagle:“The drought part is heading to states such as Kansas, where farmers again will receive assistance for hardship after some controversy over funding the relief out of farm conservation funds. “‘This is a life-and-death issue for many farmers in Kansas,’ said Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays. “But senators weren’t pleased with House Republicans, who came up with the money by taking disaster relief money from funds designated for another farm program that pays farmers for land, water and wildlife stewardship. “Moran said that six months ago, he didn’t think a disaster bill would happen — they’ve become difficult to pass as more lawmakers wonder why conventional farm programs are never enough to cover farmers’ needs.”Other links today:Dennis Moore-Kris Kobach linksU.S. Rep.
