Barack Obama: Promises Made, Promises Kept

http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e... My Man Crush, President Barack Obama, has not only had one of the fullest agendas since President Lyndon Johnson, he's also kept or on the path to keeping an extraordinary number of his 500+ campaign promises in his first year in office.

My national political reporter buddy Lou Jacobson at PolitiFact alerted me to a project he and other journalists have been working on to document Obama's first year in office and to measure what Obama promised and what he's delivered.

An excerpt from the Polifact story:

"Of 502 campaign promises, a PolitiFact analysis finds Obama has fulfilled 91 and achieved at least partial success with another 33. More than half of his promises have had enough progress to be rated In the Works.

He's put much of his foreign policy agenda into action, taken steps to reduce the American presence in Iraq and send more troops to Afghanistan, and his sweeping health care reform plan is on the brink of passage. The giant economic stimulus bill that passed in February made good on a host of promises on green energy, education and transportation."

Some things have been put on a back burner and the move toward transparency has been a disappointment.

But all in all, we have a President who is doing what he said he would do.

Scott Roeder Complains Like A Big Baby

scottreder-thumb-200x149.jpg

scottreder-thumb-200x149.jpg

Convicted would-be mad bomber and accused murderer Scott Roeder bitches that he's being treated like a criminal.

Boo. Hoo.

I guess he forgot about that conviction for "criminal use of explosives" in 1996. Then there's that whole accusation that he killed Dr. George Tiller in front of a whole church full of witnesses, er, parishioners, last Sunday in Wichita.

Scott, instead of calling the AP when you feel down, maybe give Leslee Unruh a call and she can cheer you up with one of her "more babies more babies" talks.

As the Palin Turns: McCain Says “No Help For You!” Bristol

http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e... the Seinfeldian Soup Nazi, Sen. John McCain has told Bristol Palin and young women like her, "No pregnancy prevention or post-natal aid for you! Come back in three years!"From CBS News: (AP) Republican John McCain, whose running mate disclosed that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, has opposed proposals to spend federal money on teen-pregnancy prevention programs and voted to require poor teen mothers to stay in school or lose their benefits. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's announcement Monday about her daughter, Bristol, was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's. Palin said her daughter intends to raise her child and marry the baby's father, who was identified only by his first name, Levi. The baby is due in late December.John, Sarah, keep those family values a-comin'!Todd EppKansas Watch http://kswatch.squarespace.com

I Guess I Didn’t Catch Sarah Palin on Northern Exposure—Or Did I?

http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e... used to watch the CBS Alaskan-set dramedy Northern Exposure all the time in the 1990s.I loved its depiction of small town life peopled with unique and quirky characters. However, I guess I missed the episodes with Sarah Palin as mayor of Cicely, AK.Or maybe Shelly, the former beauty queen, was actually based on Gov. Palin's character? Think about it.Nonetheless, it does appear Gov. Palin did end up marrying Chris Stevens.Who knew!

What’s the Over/Under on Palin Remaining on the GOP Ticket?

http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e...'s see, it's only been since Friday and what have we learned about Gov. Sarah Palin? * She was for the Bridge to Nowhere but then said she wasn't. * She failed to defend a fellow GOP woman state leader on a radio show from being called a "cancer" (the leader was a cancer survivor" and being called the B word. * Did she fully disclose to Sen. John McCain that her unmarried 17 year old daughter was pregnant and was going to marry the father? Did she tell McCain that she had ties to the Alaska Independence Party, or at the least provided a "welcoming" video for their convention as governor? So, is she the GOP's Tom Eagleton? What else don't we know?I bet she's off the ticket by the end of September. Some don't think she'll make it past this week. What do you think?Below, discuss whether you think she will be:Not even put on the ticket this week.Off the ticket by September 15thOff the ticket by September 30thOff the ticket by October 15thRemains on the ticket through Election DayTalk amongst yourselves.Todd EppKansas Watch http://kswatch.squarespace.com

How About a Kansas Blogger Meet Up August 29th in Topeka?

I am planning to be in Topeka on August 29th (the Friday before Labor Day) for a meeting. If any of my fellow Kansas bloggers would like to meet up (or really dedicated readers or fellow political junkies), let me know at epplaw(at)gmail(dot)com and let's see if we can set up something.Perhaps we could meet for coffee or at Washburn or at some cool new Topeka hangout and talk blogging and politics (or Chiefs, KU, or KSU football, for that matter). Let me know! I look forward to meeting you.

Fred Phelps and WBC Fool Canada

http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e... have to hand it to Fred Phelps and his merry band of gay/USA bashers at Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka. The Canadians say they are on the look out for the group, who said they were going to protest an accident victim's funeral in the Great White North. But alas, the angry, hateful, but wiley Topekans fool the Canadians and slip into the country.Makes you tremble a bit if you're a Canadian citizen that their police and border officials can't keep out people who they know are coming. The Winnipeg Sun lets us in on the secret of the Phelps clan's success: Despite an attempt to stop them at the border, members of a fundamentalist U.S. church are in Manitoba and intend to picket Tim McLean Jr.'s funeral today, a spokeswoman for the group claimed yesterday. Shirley Phelps-Roper refused to say where Westboro Baptist Church members slipped past Canadian border guards or how many entered the country overnight Thursday... To avoid any suspicion at the border, WBC members did not have placards with them, said Phelps-Roper, daughter of church pastor Fred Phelps. They sent their signs into Canada by courier and picked them up after they arrived, she said....Thank God it was just placards and not enriched uranium the Phelpsites managed to pre-place for their little escapade. You can say a lot of things about old Fred but stupid is not one of them.Photo: Captains Bob and Doug MacKenzie of the Royal Canadian Immigration and Border Control Ministry? For more Kansas political news, views, and humor, go to Kansas Watch at http://kswatch.squarespace.com

About Tuesday Night

Just a few assorted thoughts after Tuesday's Kansas Primary Election. * If you want an outstanding synopsis of What It All Means, go read Nick Sloan's winners and losers. * Everyone blew Lynn Jenkins' possibility of victory. * Early in the results, WIBW-TV's analyst kept talking about some magical "rural Kansas votes" what would save Runnin' Jim Ryun's track spikes against the Energizer Bunny Jenkins. Seems like a pretty silly statement now. Jenkins lead all night. * The Wacky Right took a shot to the head. Sexfree Phill Kline over in Johnson County got zonked as did the aforementioned Runnin' Jim. Eric Rucker, however, remains the Spawn of Phill in Shawnee County. * WIBW-TV had about fifteen ways it was covering the primary election-TV, streaming video, Twitter, website, blogs, live chat, live updates from the Kansas Secretary of State's Office. Well done! They are way, way ahead of the curve in election coverage options. * I'm going to be sad to see Sexfree Phill go. He is good for Kansas Watch traffic and just so much fun to needle. Looks like more posts on Fred Phelps and pray that Eric Rucker quits sounding so darn reasonable like he did last night on WIBW. Jim Ryun will be missed to but he just didn't lend himself to as much abuse. Have to respect a high schooler who runs a sub-4:00 mile. Now, onward and upward to the General, fellow Sunflowers! For more on Kansas politics, go to Kansas Watch at http://kswatch.squarespace.com

Do JoCo GOP Defections Help Phill Kline?

Thought it might be interesting to look at some of the registration numbers for Johnson County, which has probably the most interesting primary race Tuesday--GOP incumbent District Attorney Phill Kline v. Challenger Steve Howe. * Total 2008 primary election registered voters--342,095 * Total 2006 general eleciton registered voters--342,688 * Total 2008 primary election Democratic voters--76,270 * Total 2006 general election Democratic voters--71,136 * Total 2008 primary election Republican voters--163,533 * Total 2006 general election Republican voters--169,629 * Total 2008 primary election Independent voters--100,234 * Total 2006 general election Independent voters--99,656Here's something that makes you want to go "hmmm". While GOP voters still outnumber Democratic voters by more than 2:1 in Cupcake Land, does this make the Republican primary voter more or less conservative? The loss of Republican voters is nearly equal to Democratic and Independent voter gains from the 2006 general election.Without polling, I'd suggest the leftward/center shift, though only about 4% of Republican voters, probably helps Kline. If turnout is decent, it might not matter. It turnout is light and Sexfree Phill's True Believers turnout, it could be a factor. But that's why we play the game, right?!
