Abstinence Education Fails the Palin Household

http://worldonline.media.clients.ellingtoncms.com/img/blogs/entry_img/2008/Sep/01/1065306_11970783.jpgFrom the Huffington Post: Sarah Palin's 17-year-old , unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, the campaign has announced. Hoping to quell internet rumors about about her youngest son, Palin released the news about her daughter Bristol earlier today. A statement released by the campaign said that Bristol Palin will keep her baby and marry the child's father. Bristol Palin is five months pregnant, and the baby is due in late December. Can you imagine the Rightwingers' outcry if this were Barack Obama's 17 year old unmarried daughter? For more on Kansas political news and views, read Kansas Watch at http://kswatch.squarespace.com

Hey Todd.....don't worry about Barack's daughter. If she were to wind up pregnant she would have an abortion becase, and I quote, "he wouldn't want her punished with a baby"! Also, wasn't Barack's mother a teenager when she became pregnant?

"No, Asbestos. The hatchet job here is by McCain's campaign who is the one that gave the sole reason for Palin having to announce her daughter's pregnancy was to dispel a RUMOR that Trig was Bristol's kid."That was a smear from a far left bolg, and untrue. So there was nothing to dispel. You know about "Rumors" like the one Obama haters repeat about his "muslim" faith? I don't buy that nor do I care about that rumor. The real question is why would you respond to that ugly "rumor" that was not true? That is what I mean here, you liberals have lost your way. If there are any "feminists" left in the DNC, I bet they are just PO'ed at people like you and Bea, whom should know better, you are women.

"I assume these same people are the ones that were perfectly fine with some commentators making fun of Clinton's daughter?"By the way it wasn't "some commentators," it was good old John McCain. And did you hear what he called his wife one day at a campaign rally? It's not repeatable in polite company. And all this talk about how I'm the sexist one??!!

Here is evidence of some of the "change" the far left Dems hope to bring about: they will erase 40 years of progress for women's rights. Hello, Obama, bye-bye feminism.

Actually, from what I've been reading in the Bible (yes! left-wing non-christians read the bible too!) sex before marriage is okay, or at least not condemned. Premarital sex is not at all addressed in Leviticus (one of the most explicit books of the Bible.) And here's what Deuteronomy says about the subject: (28)If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; (29)Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.So the teenage father owes Todd Palin 14 bucks, and can never divorce or otherwise "put away" Bristol the rest of his life. The matter is closed.

This morning's headline: McCain Turns Sour on His Onetime Media `Base' as Election Nears And now to all the other legitimate criticism of McCain's handling of this VP decision we can add: crybaby. Unbelievable. This guy thinks he's ready to lead the country. He cannot even run a campaign.

scott, why limit that question to mothers? This constant reference to a mother doing this to her child is bugging me. I would be just as unimpressed with a father who accepted the vp nomination at this time knowing this was going to come out about his daughter.

Things happen. Kids get preganant. The only question I see as fair is the judgement to hurl this young girl into the center of a national debate. Her mother knew when she chose to enter this race that her daughter would be subjected to this conversation. She must be thinking "Thanks alot,Mom".

scott3460 6 years, 3 months ago

Do they want to win so much that they are willing to sacrifice her daughter's well-being?:The answer appears to be yes. I posed the question earlier today, how many mothers out there would go ahead and allow themselves to be nominated for the VP job knowing this would be coming for your minor daughter. Incredible.

I wonder if young Bristol Palin knew anything about birth control? When young Bristol gets married to the father of her baby (did you see how the Palin campaign announced the impending wedding...wonder how the father feels about this), can we call it a Shotgun Wedding, or would Harpoon Gun Wedding be more appropriate?

ASBESTOS 6 years, 3 months ago

Snotty either is ageist with McCain calling him derogatorially "gramps":"Oh well, direct your anger at Gramps and his advisors, their the ones who picked this dud. Did you make sure to do a background check on each person before taking part? Please, if you aren't talking about Obama but just about people who may have spent some time around Obama, then give it a rest. Remember, if you are doing that, then be sure to point out that McCain still is a friend of George W. Bush. The saddest part is that at age 17 this girl is going to marry the baby's father. Maybe it will be a long happy marriage, but I wouldn't put money on it. Almost as sad is the fact that a personally trying time for the family is now on public display. This is the level to which the political process has degenerated; both sides pointing fingers then crying foul when the finger points at them, usually over crap that's really noone else's business. But it sells papers and boosts ratings, right? No wonder Colin Powell didn't want to run...

"scott3460:"1. she lusts after the VP job, to the detriment of her children"This is blatantly sexist."I disagree, but that is beside the point. You McCain apologists claim that I, and others, have gone too far in criticizing the family and child of Ms. Palin. I ask for evidence & all you can show is that I claimed that she, Gov. If you put 100 women (and men - don't want to be sexist) in a room and said, you can have the VP nomination, but it means putting your teenaged daughter through an emotionally damaging public trauma, 99 of the 100 people would decline the job. Gov. Palin chose, that's right chose!, not to do so. And this hypocrite wants to impose her religious beliefs on the country!

Schecter, who also blogs at The Agonist, said in an interview the anecdote is "an early example of his uncontrollable temper." In the book he outlines several other examples of McCain losing his cool and raises the question of how that would affect a McCain presidency. The exchange between McCain and his wife was not reported anywhere when it happened, Schecter said (a LexisNexis database search confirms this). In 1992, McCain's mention in the national media revolved mostly around his involvement in the Keating Five scandal, and only local reporters closely followed his re-election bid.McCain is well known for his rapport with the national media covering his presidential bid (he's jokingly referred to the press as "my base"), but Schecter said this incident was buried not out of fealty to the Arizona senator. Rather, it was uneasiness about how to get such a coarse exchange into a family newspaper, and he didn't fault the local press for not covering the incident."Members of the media are squeamish covering stuff like this so they let it go," Schecter told RAW STORY in an interview Monday. "Back in '92, when people use naughty words, [reporters] don't know as much what to do with it." Much has changed since then. President Bush's reference to a New York Times reporter as a "major league a$$hole" was reported in at least 47 newspapers during the 2000 campaign, when the off-color remark was overheard, according to a database search. And more than a dozen newspapers have reported Dick Cheney's recommendation that Sen. Patrick Leahy "f%%k yourself."McCain and his aides have brushed off suggestions that his temper could impede his ability to perform the sometimes-delicate tasks asked of a president. The candidate was asked about his legendary temper last week on "Fox News Sunday," where he cited his ability to work "across the aisle" while in the Senate."You can't scare people or intimidate them if you're going to reach agreement with your colleagues and your contemporaries And I've worked hard at that, and that's what the American people want," McCain said. " The second thing is if I lose my capacity for anger, then I shouldn't be president of the United States. ... When I see the waste and corruption in Washington, I get angry."McCain's campaign did not return a call from RAW STORY seeking comment Monday morning. Schecter says McCain's anger is much more than a passion for the issues. One can only imagine what would happen if McCain were to try to squeeze that temper into the tight confines of diplomacy."The public certainly has to know what this guy might do as president," Schecter says. Examples like the ones in his book "should worry people, quite frankly."

How critical the liberals seem to be with regard to Bristol Palin who chose to keep her child alive. I guess if she had a liberal-condoned abortion, she would have been lauded. It's also interesting that the liberals have selective hearing when their leader has asked them to leave the children and families of the candidates alone.

McCain's two-liner conveys some interesting insights into what he considers humorous (lesbianism, a young woman's physical appearance), particularly since it was delivered to a Republican crowd. Remember, this is the party that champions pro-family values. McCain's lapse in judgment is a significant clue into aspects of his "character," and thus relevant to the voting public. Again... shame on liberals. As the proud aunt of two fabulous adopted children, I have watched them grow into productive citizens much loved by parents who could not have children of their own. One is a degreed nurse and the other a successful business person. Their lives have enriched our family and will enrich our country and the lives of others.I never cease to thank their unwed teenage mothers who believed their lives were precious and gave them life instead of destroying their existence. Polls show the age question isn't going away, despite the Arizona senator's efforts to deflect it with self-deprecating humor, or disprove it by keeping a grueling schedule."Sure, people live to be 90, but you are not as sharp," said Virginia Bailey, 73, a retired administrative assistant who lives near Schenectady, N.Y., and is a Republican. "I'm not as sharp as I was ten years ago, and I'm sure (McCain) isn't either - even though he wouldn't admit it."Tangling with a Democratic majority in the House and Senate will wear on McCain, as well the normal rigors of the job. Palin's family off-limits? Maybe for Barack Obama, but not for me.Democrats shoot themselves in both feet every time they try to take the high road, because the Republicans never do. For example, if I were Al Gore, I would still be contesting the 2000 election instead of all that "concede and heal" nonsense.So... I'll say what nobody else will. If Sarah Palin can't keep tabs on her own daughter, arming her with abstinence education and Christian piety, how, someone tell me, how, in God's name, is she supposed to run a country? If baby Trig, known to have Down Syndrome, came prematurely by a month to a 44-year-old mother, and that mother, Governor Palin, finished a speech and then flew for 12 hours with her water broken only to pass up two hospitals with NICUs only to give birth in some backwater medical clinic, how, in God's name, are we to trust her to handle a time-is-of-the-essence international crisis? If son Track can't be mentioned in public without noting that he enlisted last year, and, coincidentally is headed to Iraq this year on the same date-- September 11th-- then I'll be damned if I'll keep the kids out of it.Governor Palin is, plainly and simply, whoring her kids out for political purposes. She's turning Track into a modern doughboy, Bristol into an anti-choice poster child, and using Trig as testament to her pioneer toughness, bragging that she returned to work just three days after birthing him... like that's something to be proud of.She's a disgrace-- a political animal of the first order that could only be the creation of ambition, blind fervency, and Karl Rove.

She thinks it perfectly OK to impose her religious beliefs on the citizenry that may, or may not, share the same religious convictions, but she expects the taxpayers to provide her the financial support needed as a direct result of her "choice." Were she a private citizen, footing the bill for her personal choice, I would agree that she is to be praised. As it stands, she is simply transferring the cost of her choice to the taxpayers - an option she allows herself, but does not afford others.

Or are you referring to Clinton, the time that happened and it was a Huge deal, with things like impeachment, trials, non-stop media coverage, slavering pundits, apologist-Clintonistas, rabid anti-Clinton hypocrites, etc. If you had another time in mind, where it happened and it wasn't a big deal, you're free to own up to it. No Snotty, most perople were not "pointing out the failings of Ms. Palin", you were sticking your nose into an issue that has nothing to do with the publicicy, and the blog author's first statment is:"Sarah Palin's 17-year-old , unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, the campaign has announced. "Of sourse this is a hatchet job on a 17 year old that happens to be pregnant, and transferring that to "shame ofn the parents". Your Ideas of "fair game" are pretty warped, and your judgement is even worse.ONE more time for the slow Obama supporters:"Sen. Barack Obama campaigns in Monroe, Michigan, on Monday."Let me be as clear as possible," Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."Obama said reporters should "back off these kinds of stories" and noted that he was born to an 18-year-old mother."How a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics, and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off-limits.""That was your leader,..now KNOCK IT OFF!!!

I'm not buying it. I still think the baby is Bristol's and that this whole "she's five months preggers now" business is just a smokescreen. I'd bet good money that she has a "miscarriage" before the "child" is carried to term. It's all too fishy and as was mentioned, the child has now become the focus, rather than Sarah. Just look at some of the photos of Bristol and Trig together...or at least the ones that haven't been disappeared yet...they speak for themselves. Personally I couldn't give a rats ass about the whole scenerio, except to say that if Palin will lie about this...what else will she lie about?

POCO 6 years, 3 months ago

Obama: "I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."On the other hand, we find the Palin family standing by a daughter who did not take the easy, quiet way out. They do not see this child as a "punishment", but will welcome a grandchild with love. And, what can become of this baby... maybe he/she will be a great leader, the President of this country, a brave military soldier who fights on behalf of our country. This baby will have a future. And, what would be the future of Obama's girls' mistake? Perhaps, a soiled utility room until "it" breathes no more. Shame on the liberals who do not see the potential that lives in every child.

"So there, I a mere GOP member am more in tune with the "messianic Obama" than you one of his supporters are."No you are not, you just hope the damaging information will stop leaking out. It won't.There are perfectly legitimate conclusions about Sarah Palin that can be drawn from the information that has been revealed in the last 24 hours:1. she lusts after the VP job, to the detriment of her children2. McCain did a horrible, horrible, horrible job of vetting her as a candidate3. Palin is a hypocrite who wishes to dictate whether someone else may have an abortion, yet relies upon taxpayer resources to afford the consequences of her decision. 4. She is a liar who is claiming she told Congress to keep the Bridge to Nowhere money, but clearly sought the funds while campaigning for her job. There are many more, I am sure, but these are what immediately spring to mind.

Bob Forer 6 years, 3 months ago

The whole "experience" debate is silly. Under our system of government, there is only one job that gives you both executive and foreign policy experience, and that's the one McCain and Obama are running for. Nevertheless, it's a hardy perennial: If your opponent is a governor, you accuse him of lacking foreign policy experience. If he or she is a member of Congress, you say this person has never run anything. And if, by chance, your opponent has done both, you say that he or she is a "professional politician." When Republicans aren't complaining about someone's lack of experience, they are calling for term limits. That's why the important point about Palin's lack of experience isn't about Palin. It's about McCain. And the question is not how his choice of Palin might complicate his ability to use the "experience" issue or whether he will have to drop experience as an issue. It's not about the proper role of experience as an issue. It's not about experience at all. It's about honesty. The question should be whether McCain -- and all the other Republicans who have been going on for months about Obama's dangerous lack of foreign policy experience -- ever meant a word of it. And the answer is apparently not. Many conservative pundits woke up this morning fully prepared to harp on Obama's alleged lack of experience for months more. Now they face the choice of either executing a Communist-style U-turn ("Experience? Feh! Who needs it?") or trying to keep a straight face while touting the importance of having been mayor of a town of 9,000 if you later find yourself president of a nation of 300 million. We all know that modern political campaigns choose their issues from the cafeteria line, after market-testing them and then having them professionally framed. Rarely, though, are we offered such a clear and unarguable example. How could anyone truly believe that Barack Obama's background and job history are inadequate experience for a president and simultaneously believe that Sarah Palin's background and job history are adequate? It's possible to believe one or the other. But both? Simply not possible. John McCain has been -- what's the word? -- lying. And so have all the pundits who rushed to defend McCain's choice. This is especially damning to McCain because his case for himself (besides not being Obama, a standard under which many of us might qualify) has rested on his honor and integrity. The North Vietnamese couldn't break him, and neither could the Brahmins of his own party in the Senate. He was a maverick who always told it straight. So much for that.

If Bristol Palin were just another 17 year old, she would be off limits. If Bristol's mom hadn't made such a big deal out of being anti-choice and pro-abstinence education, Bristol would be off limits. But this is the intersection of personal life and policy. Teenagers make all sorts of stupid mistakes. That's part of growing up. But mom--and now the Right--wants it both ways. Apparently out of wedlock kids are ok if Republicans have them. That seems to be the message, not that it is our duty as parents to try to keep our unmarried kids from getting pregnant (or impregnating others) before they are ready to take on the responsibility.Again, if this were the Obamas, we'd hear about how bad they are as parents. Instead, we hear about how good Mama Palin is. The truth is somewhere inbetween.Todd EppKansas Watch http://kswatch.squarespace.com

Poco, you are talking about the lies told by Edwards. Once people learned the truth, then the support was withdrawn. However, you claimed, "So, as far as the liberals are concerned.. Of course, we know about McCain's cheating past, and we know that conservatives think he is OK, now don't we. Care to explain that one? However, I agree with your hope that the media leaves the Palin's daughter alone, although questions to the mother about her abstinence only stance is perfectly legit since it effects the lives of others.

"....or would Harpoon Gun Wedding be more appropriate?"With all the testiness in this little "Blog" I like the humor in this post and enjoyed a laugh. Would you really want to get a girl pregnant if mom and dad were both fast on a snowmobile and a good shot with a rifle?

Bob Forer 6 years, 3 months ago

The story has broken and we now know which version of "Babygate" is true. Palin's unwed 17-year old daughter is pregnant. Palin, who arrived in St. Paul today to accept the Republican nomination for vice president, sent out a joint statement with her husband, Todd."Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned," they said. "We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," the Palin family statement concluded. This confirms three very important things:Trig is Palin's baby, and the strange strange circumstances of his birth (delivering a speech in Texas while in labor, and taking the prolonged two-pronged commercial airline flight during a high-risk pregnancy without notifying the flight crew, then driving past two hospitals in Anchorage to deliver in a facility an hour drive away with no neonatal ICU) are apparently true. Todd Palin's reason for making those potentially life and death decisions about his wife and unborn son? "You can't have a fish-picker from Texas." The fact that Palin had a 16-year old who got pregnant out of wedlock was presumably unknown by the McCain people. After all, he only met her twice, and probably never met any of her children. And it was obviously too much of a bother to vet the candidate and at the very least know in advance what kind of sensational and unwanted headlines might follow. AND, Palin didn't volunteer this information. Our Republican Vice Presidential candidate is a person of questionable judgment. I don't think there are many out there who would disagree with this statement at this point. So, in the first three days, she's lied about saying "Thanks but no thanks" on the bridge to nowhere, and withheld information from the campaign she's supposedly trying to help, that could be devastating to McCain. At the very least, it sure doesn't help. What's next?As I said before, this may be the tip of our Alaskan iceberg. There are 'gates' a-plenty out there that are just waiting for some pretty basic investigation to reveal their secrets.

As a former Republican (not because I left the party - because the party left me) I just nod my head: of course abstinence education is silly. It was silly when I was in college, scouring the countryside for sex, and it was silly for the 2.5 million years of humanity before that, but for the credulous congregations that believe the earth is six thousand years old, I guess anything is possible. It's too bad they don't practice abstinence AFTER marriage; that's when it would do all of us the most good.Jim

Bristol Palin's pregnancy is the result of absentee parenting. When Palin first ran for governor, she assured the media that her husband Todd would quit his job and watch the kids if she won the election. Sarah won the election, and Todd quit his job. However, Todd couldn't handle the job of being Mr. Mom and went back to work in the oil fields. Being a busy executive, Sarah had no time for her kids, so the little Palins were shipped out to live with relatives. Bristol fell in with "the wrong crowd" in Juneau, and ended up knocked up. So much for right-wing "family values."

John Edwards, running as a Presidential candidate, certainly thrust himself and his family in front of the spotlight. He did not come forward with a public announcement regarding his "mistake". Instead, he lied multiple times and embarrassed his cancer-stricken wife and his innocent children. So, as far as the liberals are concerned.. Edwards is OK and Palin "allowed her family to thrust in the media spotlight". Super logic. I hope the liberals will listen to their candidate and leave Sarah Palin's family alone.

beatrice 6 years, 3 months ago

Poco, did you notice that John Edwards was removed from his spot to speak at the Democratic National Convention? Now, if he is removed, how exactly does that translate as his being "okay" with liberals? It doesn't, which means you were stretching the truth just to make a bogus point. Stick to the facts.I wish mother and child and family well. No teen should be going through this in a national spotlight -- unless her last name is "Spears." I just wonder, how can Palin continue to support abstinence only sex ed when she can't even teach it effectively under her own roof? That is the only point I care to make on this personal issue, because that is the issue that actually effects the lives of people outside the Palin family.

Dear Gov. Palin:This hubbub is not about your daughter. It is about your values - those same values you want to legislate on all Americans (including "outlawing" [regulating] any and all abortion, even in cases of incest, rape or life-threatening danger to the pregnant woman).Since you are anti-abortion, preach abstinence-only and refuse to recognize that adolescents might (!) engage in sexual behavior that could result in pregnancy, then you have failed to leave your adolescent any wiggle room. It's sadly ironic that your values may well prevent your daughter from notable achievements in an arena of her choice - such as you have achieved in the political arena. But most important to me, Gov. Palin, you are free, in this country, to live with the consequences of your values - those values you imposed so effectively on your adolescent daughter. Do not, however, legislate those views onto my adolescent children. I will parent them myself, thank you.Sincerely,Not a Palin Supporter

"3. Ms. Palin is able to decide to keep her Downs syndrome baby due to the generosity of the Alaska taxpayers providing her and her family free housing and medical care. Not all women who chose between abortion and giving birth have the advantage of that luxury. Ms. Palin is a hypocrite because she seeks to impose her conclusions on others, but does not afford them the same luxury of State housing and care of the resulting child. If Ms. Palin will not afford those benefits to every woman struggling with an unwanted pregnancy, she should leave the decision to the woman involved and keep her religious dictates to herself. Same goes for the creationist crap too.

Actually my post is not meant to tie into Palin's pregnent daughter but her position on abstinence-only education. It is clear that this could have happened to any American, but there have been studies that have been conducted that shows people who come from more conservative families tend to use more unprotected sex than people from liberal families. We need comprehensive sex education in this country, and we need to teach our children what contraceptives are, what they are used for, and what they can protect against. We need to be sex-positive, and I rather be a sex-positive person than someone who advocates leading unnecessary wars.

Book: McCain temper boiled over in '92 tirade, called wife a 'c#nt' Nick JulianoPublished: Monday April 7, 2008John McCain's temper is well documented. He's called opponents and colleagues "sh#theads," "a$$holes" and in at least one case "a f&&Kng jerk." But a new book on the presumptive Republican nominee will air perhaps the most shocking angry exchange to date. The Real McCain by Cliff Schecter, which will arrive in bookstores next month, reports an angry exchange between McCain and his wife that happened in full view of aides and reporters during a 1992 campaign stop. An advance copy of the book was obtained by RAW STORY.Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cu%t." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.(CON'T)The man who was known as "McNasty" in high school has erupted in foul-languaged tirades at political foes and congressional colleagues more-or-less throughout his career, and his quickness to anger has been an issue on the presidential campaign trail as evidence of his fury has surfaced. As Schecter notes, McCain's rage is not limited to the political spectrum, and even his family cannot be spared the brute force of his anger.

Were they to stay true to their colors, this mantra of theirs would seem to preclude them from judging Bristol's pregnancy and her choice to keep her child, right? It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The Kos kids and their blog followers have already made one attempt to ruin this girl's life. Now that they have a story with actual truth behind it, we'll have to sit back and see how far they run with a teenager's identity.Let me make it clear: there are many things I don't like about Sarah Palin. We are ideologically opposed on numerous issues. Her stance on creationism and her pro-life zealousness are just two examples. Two big ones. There's the fact that McCain chose Palin for VP after meeting her only once; I'd like to think that more thought goes into the process than the need to find a conservative woman for your ticket. I'm naive like that. But the last two days of mudslinging against Palin have been so extreme, they have transformed her into an almost sympathetic figure in my eyes. More important, the barbs thrown at her have made me look upon liberals with a level of contempt I have not felt since, well, 2004.If I'm rushing to the defense of a woman whose core ideologies I oppose, then something pretty bad must be going on. And that something smells like a pungent mixture of hypocrisy and desperation."Read the rest at:http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/sarah-palin-her-daughter-and-the-smear-machine/

If the program doesn't accomplish its mission, slashing its funds isn't going to improve the situation. In most cases, it is a lack of funds that is the problem. Not enough money to truly support and educate the teen mothers. When you combine that with Palin's refusal to increase the threshold for welfare benefits in the state (AK is below many other states when it comes to this), it is a double whammy for the teen mothers. Many of whom have no other means of support and probably don't have familial support ( a key component, I believe, in the success of these teen mothers). Daycare subsidies fall under these social services so now you have teen mothers who can't afford to support themselves or their child with a job because daycare is a financial impossibility. It is a no-win situation for those who chose life - something Palin very much promotes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwKWwuyRN2IThis is a stance Obama has taken again and again. He said that his family is off limits, so now he also says that Palin's family is off limits. GOP is just trying to make news out of the lack of news for themselves. The reason why Mccain choses Palin is that simple: He knows she can generate news and interests, and then use that to attack Obama and the Democrats. Those underhand tactics all over again. Shame on you GOP!

scott3460 6 years, 3 months ago

"Are you suggesting that, because Palin is a government employee, she does not have the right to spend her money as she chooses?"No, I am stating that as long as she receives free housing, food and medical care, she has no business dictating that everyone else in society, who do not share in those benefits, follow her religious beliefs. She may do whatever she wishes, including shamelessly making her newborn son a political prop to rev up the right wing of the Republican Party. However, she has no right to dictate the choice for others when she, thanks to Alaska's taxpayers, is not in a position to fully bear the consequence of that decision.

Jonas_opines, I guess I'm not clear then. Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain has requested that her family's privacy be respected but here is an article by the people who support their campaign blatantly using her infant with Down's Syndrome as a political tool. She should be just as outraged for her infant being used in such a way as she is about the media scrutiny of her daughter's pregnancy.Otherwise it does leave a fairly large impression that she is using her children for political gain.

This just in from Yahoo News: WASILLA, Alaska - The boyfriend of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's unwed, pregnant daughter will join the family of the Republican vice presidential candidate at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn. Levi Johnston's mother said her 18-year-old son left Alaska on Tuesday morning to join the Palin family at the convention where Sen. John McCain will officially receive the Republican nomination for president. The boy's mother, Sherry Johnston, said there had been no pressure put on her son to marry 17-year-old Bristol Palin and the two teens had made plans to wed before it was known she was pregnant."This is just a bonus," Johnston said. The young man's presence could set off a media frenzy around the young couple as photographers and cameramen scramble for pictures of the two teenagers. On Monday, Palin and her husband, Todd, said their 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, planned to have the baby and wed a young man identified only as Levi. The family asked the media to respect the young couple's privacy as has been the tradition with children of candidates.Sarah Palin is scheduled to address the convention Wednesday night and traditionally her family would join her at the conclusion of her speech.Levi Johnston, a high school hockey player for Wasilla High School, is not listed on the team roster for 2008-2009, and his mother wouldn't say if he graduated. She said simply he's no longer a student and any further information would have to come from him. Many social conservatives have rallied behind Gov. Palin and her family's troubles. The McCain campaign has said the Palins are like any other American family and that "life happens."Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said that Palin's family and her daughter's pregnancy were not relevant to her potential performance as vice president. "I think people's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics."Just days after she was picked as McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin has become a lightening rod for attention. Aside from her daughter's pregnancy, it was disclosed that a private attorney has been retained for her in a legislative ethics investigation for her dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner. It also was disclosed that Palin's husband had been arrested on a drunken-driving charge two decades ago.________OMG, the RNC is regressing from political theatre to three ring circus. This charade adds further credence to the exception to the rule: a politician's family should normally be off limits, but when you parade them like tin soldiers in front of an international audience, you reap what you sow, baby.

I posted the links to this on this or the other thread about the same topic. That is a separate issue from DailyKos reporting any sources about Bristol being pregnant and I haven't any idea if that "report" was before or after Palin's announcement. Contrary to Abestos beliefs, I don't go to the DailyKos site. I think I have clicked on links that have been posted to read the articles but that is it. If rumors that my child was actually my daughter's child, you get my medical records of the birth. It is pretty simple. It's humorous that since Palin believes in her morals and teaches them to her children and her child made a choice that is contrary to those morals, that people crucify Palin because of her obvious moral failures. You can't control your children's choices all the time, which is a known to most parents. You can teach them all you can, but they will make decisions that you don't like. The best thing you can do is guide the next decisions they make which is why her daughter is keeping the baby and why Palin herself kept her son even though he has DS. Some would have aborted in both situations because of the inconvenience. I like Palin for the fact that she didn't back done from these challenges and her daughter is accepting the outcome for her choice to have sex. Obviously those aren't the only reasons why I like this choice for McCain's VP, but they are a couple...

How very easy of Ms. Palin to advocate the pro-life position when she has the taxpayers of Alaska to pay housing, food and medical benefits in support of her decision. This Palin woman is just a gift that keeps on giving. And proof of a God with a supreme sense of humor and irony. After all the supposed anti-Americanism of Obama's Rev. Wright, a few interesting words from Ms. Palin's church. Wonder if she renounced them? "Pastor Kalnins has also preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith;" and said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode.""During the 2004 election season, he praised President Bush's performance during a debate with Sen. John Kerry, then offered a not-so-subtle message about his personal candidate preferences. "I'm not going tell you who to vote for, but if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I'm sorry."

Let's take the kids off the table and talk about Palin. I take it all back, Palin does have experience. But saying she fought against the BTN - and the 'good 'ol boys' is at best extremely misleading. Seems like she's ripe for becoming an 'agent for change" (in Republican-speak this means more of the same).Excerpts from the WashingtonPost.com (today)Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group. :In fiscal 2000, Wasilla received a $1 million earmark, tucked into a transportation appropriations bill, for a rail and bus project in the town. And in the winter of 2000, Palin appeared before congressional appropriations committees to seek earmarks, according to a report in the Anchorage Daily News.Palin and the Wasilla City Council increased Silver's fee from $24,000 to $36,000 a year by 2001, Senate records show.Soon after, the city benefited from additional earmarks: $500,000 for a mental health center, $500,000 for the purchase of federal land and $450,000 to rehabilitate an agricultural processing facility. Then there was the $15 million rail project, intended to connect Wasilla with the town of Girdwood, where Stevens has a house. The Washington trip is now an annual event for Wasilla officials. In fiscal year 2002, Wasilla took in $6.1 million in earmarks - about $1,000 in federal money for every resident. By contrast, Boise, Idaho - which has more than 190,000 residents - received $6.9 million in earmarks in fiscal 2008.

Exceprt from Yahoo news: Obama advisers and surrogates have linked Palin to conservative former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan. An Associated Press story from Alaska, dated July 17, 1999, stated that Palin, then the mayor of the small town of Wasilla, was wearing a Buchanan button during a Buchanan visit to Alaska. But in a letter to the Anchorage Daily News a week later, Palin wrote: "When presidential candidates visit our community, I am always happy to meet them. I'll even put on their button when handed one as a polite gesture of respect. ... The article may have left your readers with the perception that I am endorsing this candidate, as opposed to welcoming his visit to Wasilla."A week after that, the Associated Press reported that Palin would serve as a co-chair of Forbes' campaign.Still, the Miami Herald this week quoted an e-mail from Obama Florida spokesman Mark Bubriski that stated: "Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan, a right-winger or as many Jews call him: a Nazi sympathizer."__________I gotcha, Sarah. If Hitler visited Alaska, you'd wear a swastica.

Ms. Palin used her position as governor to pursue a private vendetta against a brother-in-lawSince Palin's announcement 5 days ago, Obama has risen to his largest lead to date in head to head national polling. Apparently the American public does not share the hardcore Republican view that Ms. Palin is the right choice. This in spite of the fact that Ms. Palin has been locked away in seclusion and has not been subjected to any press scrutiny or questioning. When she is asked to explain her extreme views, hypcoricy and overall lack of preparation, this anchor around McCain's neck will grow very heavy indeed. And in the electoral collect calculation Obama remains very secure with polls showing him ahead by 5% or more in enough states to gather 260 of the 270 needed votes. He needs only 10 votes from the remaining undecided states. McCain's task is to win in each and every one of the toss up states and steal away some of the States where Obama is leading by 5% or more. His only remaining chance to shake up the race is the debates, but it is not expected that either he, or Ms. Palin, will have much of a chance against the superior intellect of Obama and Biden.

You actually believe that a child has the discipline and judgment to always take a birth control pill and always insist upon the use of a condom. If that is the case, how do you explain the fact that teen pregnancies and STD's have not been eradicated since the implementation of explicit sex instruction in the public schools?Don't answer. I know what you will say. You will say that the only girls who get pregnant or contract std's are the ones who say they will practice abstinence. You will say that they are the only ones who fall in love and foolishly think that they only way they can keep a guy is to have unprotected sex, or to get pregnant. Unfortunately for Bristol Palin a Pro-life decision is much easier for the press to follow. Pregnacy is visual, a human is born, where the byproduct of abortion is destroyed. Is there a pregnant unmarried Democrat daughter out there who will let the press attend her pre-abortion counseling and her abortion procedure in the name of Pro-Choice advocacy? I'm Pro-choice, although I do think a woman should be able to figure out she is pregnant in the first three months, but it is sure easier to hide an abortion than a pregnancy (except maybe when Phill Kline is on the job).

Sychophant, your little twist could be used to say why even parent, why legislate against crimes or anything for that matter because people won't listen to the moral preaching! What we should do is teach our kids good morals and if they make bad decisions, then teach them to manage the outcome.

scott3460, Sarah Palin said that she and her husband will provide love and support for Bristol and her husband to be and the baby. Are you suggesting that, because Palin is a government employee, she does not have the right to spend her money as she chooses?

The libs on this forum are beginning to sound like the Taliban. What would you have Sarah Palin do? Would you have her force her daughter to have an abortion? Or would you rather the community stone her to death for the sin of not taking the pill?

Bristol and Sarah Pelin are striking a huge positive image to girls in high schools everywhere who want to have a baby out of wedlock. These girls should do as they wish and their family should wholeheartedly welcome a new born as happy grandparents. Bristol has to become an adult sometime and being pro-life it is better she get started right away and learn the difficulties of being an adult and raising a child.God must have wanted this because he makes "Life Happen" In fact, the GOP is going to start selling campaign buttons here in Saint Paul that say, "Life Happens"When Johh McCain was told this he cried and said it is so beautiful that someone so young and innocent can make such a strong affirmation of life by getting pregnant and having a baby out of wedlock. "That is so so pro-ilfe, it makes me weep" he said. And McCain reminds girls everywhere that they don't need to be married to prove how pro-life they are and how willing they are to give themselves to pregnancy.

Todd Epp and the Journal World have published an out and out lie. The JW has reached new lows in its downward spiral to tabloid status.Alaska has a very strong, comprehensive sex education policy in its public schools, and it ranks with the District of Columbia as one of the two most highly ranked states in the support for and availability of contraceptives and family planning services. In Alaska, children are able to obtain contracepties without parental consent and without parental notification. Emergency contraceptives are easily obtained through pharmacists.http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/state_dat:Palin supports abstinence based sex education, but that policy has not been implemented so far during her term as governor, and it certainly was not in effect during the past 11 years of Bristol's public education.Unless the Journal World can prove otherwise, with copies of the school superintendants' signatures approving Bristol Palin's "opt out" of sex ed throughout her entire school career, the JW should retract this so-called news item.

janeyb asked: JohnBrown: Are you pointing out what a capable administrator Sarah Palin is? Look what she did for a city of 6700 people. Why can't the Lawrence government do this?Yep, she administered alright, she capably administered in her first public statement after being named the veep choice for McCain a deception as to who, and what, she really is (a person for earmarks, not against them). The rest of her record is also beginning to smack of more deception (e.g being against the 'good 'ol boy" network, etc.). For example, Palin's name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.," a 527 group with unlimited fundraising limits. it;'s obvious palin knows how to work the system, which makes her part of the problem, not the solution. She's also aginst abortion for any reason, including for rape victims. the other side of this coin is that it means she's FOR the rights of would-be rapists to select the mother of their offspring. For McCain, this was his first Presidential Decision, which may explain why O'Bama is now at or above 50% in the polls for the first time this cycle.

Palin did not mention her daughter's pregnancy until the DailyKos posted a lie, a defamation, an attack on her character and her family, that required defense.Kos brought what both Obama and McCain agree should be private, into the public realm by fostering this slanderous assault on a child on his blog.Shame on Kos, and even more shame on the Journal World, for continuing to feed the frenzy of hate and lies that they nurture on their forums.

Bears posting here too...st. paul - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live. After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Inking her initials on the legislation - "SP" - Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.According to Passage House's web site, its purpose is to provide "young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives" and help teen moms "become productive, successful, independent adults who create and provide a stable environment for themselves and their families."http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/02/palin_slashed_funding_to_help.htmlThat isn't very consistent with a pro-life point of view, is it? Why are these teens who choose to keep their baby undeserving of the necessary support to help them raise their baby and become productive citizens?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Godot, there are many ways Palin could have dispelled the rumor without mentioning her daughter's pregnancy.

katara: For clarity, yes I agree. Newsmax's article, which you linked, was shameless. As shameless as Epp's multitude of articles, certainly.

Godot 6 years, 3 months ago

Totally irrelevant, Katara. Who knows if this home was well run, or if it accomplished its mission to rehabilitate these young mothers or if its support was a good use of taxpayer money? I have worked with homes for unwed mothers as a board member and volunteer, and, as a result, I can tell you that the ones that are well managed and deserving of continuing support are few and far between.

scott3460 6 years, 3 months ago

Your argument may make sense if she did, otherwise, she reamins a hypocrite who takes public food, housing and medical to support and make possible her pro-life decision, but slashes funding for others. That does, however, seem to be the Republican way.

Despicable behavior by so many in the media and on these strings. The epitomy of hypocrisy from 'open-minded, accepting liberals' who scream and whine about 'Rovain politics', but never hesitate to jump down in the gutter when the opportunity presents itself. Congrats, you're just as disgusting as those you oppose.

r.e. Mike Blur's statement:When Palin first ran for governor, she assured the media that her husband Todd would quit his job and watch the kids if she won the election. Sarah won the election, and Todd quit his job. However, Todd couldn't handle the job of being Mr. Mom and went back to work in the oil fields. Being a busy executive, Sarah had no time for her kids, so the little Palins were shipped out to live with relativesMike, what's your source for this information? Thanks.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY'S OWN PEGGY NOONAN SAYS "ITS OVER" Who is Peggy Noonan? She is one of a handful of the nationally known conservative pundits who has brain, brawn experience, stature and respect. She is an author of seven books on politics, religion and culture, a weekly columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and was a primary speech writer and Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan. She is considered a political conservative.Five of Noonan's books have been New York Times bestsellers. Noonan is a Trustee of the Manhattan Institute. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from Miami University, St. John Fisher College, her alma mater Fairleigh Dickinson University, Adelphi College, and Saint Francis College. She was nominated for Emmy Awards for her work on The West Wing and America: A Tribute to Heroes.Anyway, she was on an NBC segment with Mike Todd today, and after she was finished speaking, her microphone remained "hot" and she continued to speak with the other guest, Republican consultant Mike Murphy. As some of you may know, satellite feeds remain live, and since the microphone remained on, and was apparently recorded by someone, you can clearly hear the continued conversation. She trashes both McCain and Palin. Calls it "political bullsh*it." and laments that "its over." Very telling, as it is a very candid and intellectually honest, and it comes from a well respected conservative. The fact that it is her private thoughts, and not public spin makes it even more credible. Here is the link to the Yahoo story which contains a video of the broadcast and Noonan's after-broadcast comments. INCREDIBLE. PRICELESS You have to hear and see it to believe it. http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/200809 ... tico/20576So, to you conservative posters who insist that Palin is perfect and that you're gonna "whup us" in November, I suggest that you reconsider your mindless, camp follower ways, and start thinking for yourselves like you leaders are doing (at least privately). Fascists and communists are known as mindless camp followers. Americans, on the other hand, have a noble tradition of venerating the highest ideals of independent thought and Constitutional Democracy. So, to you posters who continue to brag how "perfect" Palin is, and how you're gonna "whup us," think again, and please, take some advice: Shut up (you're only embarrassing yourself), cowboy up, and get over it. According to one of your trusted leaders. "ITS OVER"!!

". . .decent people wouldn't be carving up a woman and her daughter like political lambs."Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what you said when the conservative movement went after Hillary and Chelsea in the '90s. Anyway, if part of one's political platform rests on rhetoric about family values and strengthening America's families, one's family & its choices certainly become fair game.

invictus, how wrong of you to say that. However, I'm trying real hard to see a resemblance between Obama and his daughters, but I just don't.

jaywalker 6 years, 3 months ago

"Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what you said when the conservative movement went after Hillary and Chelsea in the '90s."As a matter of fact, temperance, yes it was. Feel free to blow your blanket generalizations out your back door if you don't mind. Now, criticism of Hillary and her involvement w/ Whitewater was fair game, but personal attacks on family never should be. And as far as your spiel on a family values platform, cop a clue. Outside of Ward and June Cleaver, who has blanket control of teen-agers? Pallin has a strong family with 5 kids, married for 20 years, and is standing behind her daughter and the unplanned pregnancy, her boyfriend and their decison to get married. Sorry if somehow you're one of the morons I've alluded to that finds those facts to be a strike against her. Would it have satisfied your 'idea' of family values if Pallin had aborted her son when she learned he had Downs, disowned her daughter and kicked her out of the house when she found she was pregnant, and quit her life's work and huddled into the kitchen like a good little wife? Brilliant.

This gentleman attended the U.S. Naval Academy with John McCain. He graduated in the top 25% of his class. (unlike McCain, who was fifth from the bottom). He was awarded Two Silver Stars, Two Bronze Stars, Two Legions of Merit, Two Purple hearts, and like John McCain, he flew in Viet Nam, was shot down and captured, and was a fellow prisoner of war. This is what he feels about McCain's candidacy for POUSA: (video)http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/fellow-navy-pow-speaks-about
