The Fictional(?) Short Presidency of Sarah Palin
Act IWhile on a visit to the Green Zone in Baghdad on September 11, 2009, President John McCain is severely injured when a suicide bomber makes it past security and detonates a bomb within feet of the President and his group.President McCain is immediately airlifted to Ramstein AFB in Germany, where, on September 14, 2009, he dies from his injuries.Vice President Sarah Palin is sworn in as President from her hunting cabin in Alaska by a federal district court judge. After her brief remarks to the nation, an open radio microphone catches her say, "If only the damn Democrats would have supported this war, that terrorist wouldn't have been so imboldened to kill President McCain."Her unguarded remarks infuriated Democrats and even many Republicans, who believe the remarks were insensitive at best and horribly divisive at a time when Americans need to come together to honor their fallen leader.During subsequent public appearances during President McCain's state funeral, President Palin in visibly shaken and shaking. There are unconfirmed reports on the Daily Kos and The Huffington Post that she has been given sedatives to help her function.Act IIOn September 22-24, 2009, a devastating Category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Mina, hits the Atlantic Coast of Florida. Most of the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral is destroyed. But the worst of the problems come as Miami suffered horrific damage, as does Jacksonville. Despite the best efforts of Gov. Charlie Crist, evacuation plans failed because of the crush of traffic. Lawlessness ensued after days of no power, with looting and rioting. When Dr. James Dobson blames Floridians for the Hurricane Mina because they voted for Barack Obama and Joe Biden for President (McCain won in 2008 by capturing Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Colorado), President Palin fails to issue a statement condemning Dobson until September 25, 2009. Even Gov. Crist calls Pres. Palin's failure to respond "reprehensible."On September 29, 2009, U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens dies from a heart attack in his sleep. On September 30, 2009, Pres. Palin announces that she wants to ensure the overturning of Roe v. Wade and selected former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline to fill Justice Stevens' vacancy.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid calls the pick "the most unqualified and most political nomination in the history of the Republic" and vows that Kline's nomination won't even see a committee hearing. On October 3, 2009, Russia sends tanks and troops into the Baltic nations of Estonia, Lativia, and Lithuania, citing "concerns" over treatment of ethnic Russians in the former Soviet republics. In her 2008 debate with Biden, she had told the nation, "Should Russian aggression enter our allies in the Baltic, and if I were President, I will not let that stand." Pres. Palin sends a carrier group and a division of Marines off the Baltic coast in response. Russia recalls its ambassador to the United States. Satellite photos show a Russian convoy of ships off the coast of Cuba. While pre-occupied with the situation in the Baltic, on October 7, 2009, Iran launches a pre-emptive missile strike against Tel Aviv with chemical weapons. During that same debate with Biden in 2008, Pres. Palin said "an attack on Israel by Iran would be considered an attack on the United States."Pres. Palin asked Congress for a declaration of war against Iran, but Congress refuses to vote for a war with Iran while still engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan, and, apparently, the Baltic. Even Sen. Lindsey Graham says that America's armed forces are spread too thin. Congress does pass the first peace time draft since the Vietnam War. College campuses erupt with protests, with the Universities of Michigan, Kansas, Florida, California, and other schools closed because of the violent protests.Meanwhile, rumors continue to circulate, now even being reported by Joe Scarborough on MSNBC, that Pres. Palin has had a nervous breakdown. No one is quite sure who is running the country.Act IIIOn October 21, 2009, Israel has launched nuclear missiles and dropped nuclear bombs on Iran. Tehran is destroyed but turmoil has broken out in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, with all three countries governments being toppled by fundamentalist Muslim radicals. Oil from the Mideast is at a trickle and gasoline prices in the U.S. have hit $9.50/gallon. On October 29, 2009, the Dow Industrials has its biggest percentage loss in its history, losing nearly half of its value in a single day.A group of Republican and Democratic leaders of past and present secretly gather in St. Louis. Former Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and the House and Senate Republican and Democratic leaders say enough is enough, that Pres. Palin is in over her head. They appoint former Secretaries of State James Baker, Madeleine Albright, and Condeleeza Rice to secretly meet with Pres. Palin with a plan for her to resign. However, the plan is not to have Pres. Palin resign immediately. They approach her with a plan to have former Secretary of State Colin Powell be appointed then confirmed as Vice President. Then once he is confirmed, Pres. Palin is to resign and Vice President Powell is to be President. He will then appoint former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle as Vice President in a "Fusion" ticket to try and reunify the country and put experienced people in place who can deal with the nation's many pressing problems.Pres. Palin at first chaffes at the suggestion that she follow this national unity plan. She says she was elected to do a job. However, Secretary Baker politely but firmly reminds her that she's not getting the job done and even if she was, our adversaries don't respect her. NSA reports that China is assembling an invasion force in the Formosa Straits and it looks like Taiwan could be under attack within days.Palin agrees. On November 4, 2009, she names Secretary Powell as Vice President. On November 9, 2009, citing family concerns, she resigns as President of the United States, only the second President in history to do so. On November 15, 2009, the U.S. Senate confirms Sen. Daschle as Vice President.*I obviously do not want anything to happen to John McCain should he be elected. That would be a terrible tragedy for our country. And the above is a work of fiction. Or is it? I have no doubt that Gov. Palin is a good and successful person. But does she have the experience and respect to be President should the need arise? Is she too much of a partisan on abortion for her own good? Can she stand up to Putin and others?I have my doubts. To read more about Kansas political news and views, go to Kansas Watch at http://kswatch.squarespace.com

What is the educational qualification of Gov. Palin? What graduate degree does she have? It is very important as we talk about expereinces of these candidates. One expereince that surpasses all is where these candidates went to school and what they studied and how long they studied. The reason why this is an important component is that, Education is a Sum Total of all the experiences an individual acquires in a defined environment.I had some reservations at first about Obama but knowing that he went to Columbia University and Harvard University for his Law Degree Program and actaully passed his Bar Exams, I was convinced he was qualified. Not every joker can do that. What we should be concerned about here is one's intellectual capacity to be able to understand not just politics but Science, History, Economics, Geography, Technology, Law and much, much, much more. You can not simply handle the Office of the Presidency with a Community College Degree or High School Education.

Or, alternatively, John McCain gets struck in the side by shrapnel, wounding him, and the lands begin to decay. Sarah Palin calls upon the The Chiefs of Staff in the Oval Office to undergo a search for the Holy Grail. All the Chiefs fail, and fall, but in the end, Sarah Palin herself, bloodied but determined, travels to Caer Bannog and finds the grail, returning McCain and the land to health, until one of McCain's illegitimate children (does he have any of those, yet? if not he has to get started) gets raised by a bitter Palin, who was cast aside for McCain's second term. At the end he and his minions storm the White House in 2016, and father and son fall. McCain is taken to the Isle of John's Hopkins, where he rests, recovering from his wounds until his country needs him again.I hope this never happens of course… . nah, I totally wish that would happen.

Can't wait to see how pompous ass Biden reacts. Do you think he'll try to talk down to her in his condescending way? You bet! Think this will backfire? You bet!Are all democrats drama queens?By order of the DNC Internet attack squad: Spread as much misinformation about this exciting candidate as possible! Looks like some in the democratic party have been reading the tactics of Joseph Goebbels (he was a Nazi by the way). Here is some factual information (no b.s. misinformation at all): The Republican VP candidate has MORE experience than the Democratic Presidential candidate.

Wow! Who wrote this, the same group of “Good 'Ole Boys” from Alaska who Palin took on and defeated and then moved on to clean up the state's corruption and prove that she has great judgement and leadership capability as seen in her 80% approval rating as govenor? I find it sexist and hypocritical to paint Govenor Palin as an emotionally weak female incapable of dealing with any crisis even if she becomes President on week 2. The left has one piece of criteria for a candidate to be capable and 'ready to lead' and that is that he or she must embrace abortion. That is what really drives this article and the false allegations that she doesn't spend enough time with her kids that are popping up in lefty blogs. No one would ever dare make that claim against a pro-choice feminist but since Palin is a 'feminist for life' that renders her incompetent. I have to laugh at how threatened the dems and the left are with this lady. She (and her very strong stay-at-home husband) set a great example about teamwork in marriage and how women can do it all. There are plenty of profiles in her experience so I won't labor through that here. The bottom line is that she has been quickly embraced by Republicans and Independents alike because she has proven herself to be gutsy AND capable. Every President surrounds him or herself with strong trusted advisors and experts and receives information for rapid response in every crisis. I suggest that this insulting and sexiest article be slightly edited to insert the name 'Obama' every time you have written Palin. Now that would be worth considering. Then, check out her poll numbers since the announcement. Voters are tired of “insiders” and professional politicians. She is one of us who has stepped up to serve her country. Finally we have a woman who reflects the majority of women today who is ready and competent to be Vice President and President if duty calls. The liberal media and the left are going crazy. That is why articles like this will continue but cannot touch her because she is the real deal.Oh, yeah, didn't Obama give some kind of speech or something last week or something? I have to give it to Senator McCain. Brilliant pick!

asbestos: I'll have to disagree with that. While I think you might be correct in your assertion, when you multiply these examples of sexism by the number of women it would be applied to (yours: 1 women; other: ? millions?) I don't think there's much comparison anymore. manbearpig: There's not much difference. But… considering that the primary problem with Obama until now has been a question of experience (well, other than his middle name being Hussein, of course) then McCain's choice seems pretty questionable, given the very real possibility that he could die naturally before completing his first term, and he'd be, what, over 80 by the completion of a second? It seems in a way to be saying “Okay, never mind, experience isn't really that important, after all.”

The whole “experience” debate is silly. Under our system of government, there is only one job that gives you both executive and foreign policy experience, and that's the one McCain and Obama are running for. Nevertheless, it's a hardy perennial: If your opponent is a governor, you accuse him of lacking foreign policy experience. If he or she is a member of Congress, you say this person has never run anything. And if, by chance, your opponent has done both, you say that he or she is a “professional politician.” When Republicans aren't complaining about someone's lack of experience, they are calling for term limits. That's why the important point about Palin's lack of experience isn't about Palin. It's about McCain. And the question is not how his choice of Palin might complicate his ability to use the “experience” issue or whether he will have to drop experience as an issue. It's not about the proper role of experience as an issue. It's not about experience at all. It's about honesty. The question should be whether McCain — and all the other Republicans who have been going on for months about Obama's dangerous lack of foreign policy experience — ever meant a word of it. And the answer is apparently not. Many conservative pundits woke up Friday morning fully prepared to harp on Obama's alleged lack of experience for months more. Now they face the choice of either executing a John Kerry (“I was for experience before I was against it”) or trying to keep a straight face while touting the importance of having been mayor of a town of 9,000 if you later find yourself president of a nation of 300 million. We all know that modern political campaigns choose their issues from the cafeteria line, after market-testing them and then having them professionally framed. Rarely, though, are we offered such a clear and unarguable example. How could anyone truly believe that Barack Obama's background and job history are inadequate experience for a president and simultaneously believe that Sarah Palin's background and job history are adequate? It's possible to believe one or the other. But both? Simply not possible. John McCain has been — what's the word? — lying. And so have all the pundits who rushed to defend McCain's choice. This is especially damning to McCain because his case for himself (besides not being Obama, a standard under which many of us might qualify) has rested on his honor and integrity. The North Vietnamese couldn't break him, and neither could the Brahmins of his own party in the Senate. He was a maverick who always told it straight. So much for that.

“The selection of Palin in no way reduces the amount of experience John McCain has.”Unless, as an old man with a family history of heart trouble, he dies while in office, the basic point of this thread and this story, before drowned under hypothetical BS.”It was the left that argued experience was not important when they tried to defend the Messiah's lack of experience.” If you say so. I recall quite a lot of that discussion back in 1999 and 2000, when the positions were, predictably, reversed.”They cannot now change their position and argue that experience does indeed matter now that McCain has selected a running mate with experience that rivals the Messiah's.”Clearly, they can. Whether it takes or not is another case. I don't like the idea, which is why I'm still leaning towards McCain. Obama is too much like Bush in all the ways that matter, at least the way that I see it.

Todd,Since you do post in the comments. Will you at least respond to my question. If Sarah Palin is too inexperienced to be Vice President, then is Obama too inexperienced to be President seeing as how his experience doesn't run much deeper than hers?Further, I would add, and I hope you agree, that the Presidency requires more experience than the Vice Presidency.Thank you.

Okay, that was just silly. All you eggheads can swoon over what a fine polemic that is. Jeez. It is hypethetical, and could just as easily have been writter about Obama. If she is unqualified, he is even more so. And if one of these dumb scenarios were to come to fruition, guess what? She would then have more experience to be Pres, than Obama does today!

I guess I have to ask, because this is written about a woman, with such stereotypes, would the same junk have been written about Hillary? If not, what would lead you to think this woman is any less strong than her? Or are you suggesting in this article that women should never be president? I seriously take offence if you think that all women react like what you've portrayed. Women can be strong without having nervous breakdowns. The women of this community rebuilt Lawrence after Quantrill's Raid because their husbands and sons were dead. Women can be strong, and can lead without collapsing into a puddle.

Great article. It illustrates exactly why women should not be elected as president. They are incapable of making good decisions. We must keep them in the kitchen where they belong; barefoot and pregnant. In fact, they shouldn't be allowed to vote either. Yeah, great article!

Let's just not mistake it as legitimate news or a legitimate news article. Call things what they are. Obama has more experience than Palin. He has run his campaign of 2500 poople for 18 months and has made far more executive decisions than Palin ever dreams of making. The Gallup poll has Obama at the 50% mark taken after the Palin announcement assuring a landslide victory over McLame. The American poeple aren't buying into McLame's sexist pick. He is a desgrace to everyone and to old to run things. He can't even run. He needs a walker. His service to America was from prison. Jane Fonda laughs at him with his excuse as he got shot down after bombing womyn and children on an Iraqesque show of failing military policy. McSame will takre Iraq back to the Vietnam years so hwe can relive his youth. Palin's husband thinks she is a loser and he operated a motor vehicle while under the influence. Peoople in Alaska can't stand her. This girl should be applying for the chamber position she is so inexperienced. He picks a mator of a small town as his mate. He picked her so he doesn't have pay for viagra. Will anypone see the RNC convention this year other than the Christian Taliban, no the answer is no. Obama Biden 98!

Wow, not even the GOP-squad commenting here may have actually read the entire piece. I guess they missed the part where Dems and Reps got together and picked Colin Powell to take over. As a non-GOP I applaud Todd's choice of Powell for Prez for the aforementioned fictional piece.Besides, who cares about all the doubt about any of the candidates' experience or lack thereof? Look at the current administration. Even with their vast military, political, and foreign policy experience they still managed to get this country into a fine mess. Just like America's automakers have shown and continue to show that experience isn't going to get the job done (right)!I'm not voting for the men or women who have ambitions to run the country, they're all politicians(pejorative). I'm voting for change. The direction we've been going for the last eights years sure as Hell ain't the right way. I'd vote for Ron Paul or Ralph if I thought either one of them had a chance to win. Unfortunately, we're stuck with a two-party system so I'm forced to choose(as always) the lesser of two evils.
