LJWorld.com weblogs Journey to Mongolia
Juuuuuust Kidding!
Well, our car blew up. In the middle of the motor way. Steam spewing out of engine. I guess it wasn't just a faulty sensor. Luckily all of this came to light before we left Glasgow, and we were merely on the way to a lovely dinner with Andrew's relatives. Even though the car had just been checked out, there was an hidden leak in the cooling system behind the engine, and we really were overheating. We managed not to damage the engine in any way, but we did blow a head gasket. This may sound like a horrible thing, but I believe it was a blessing in disguise. That head gasket was in pretty bad shape to begin with, and probably needed replacing anyway, and we're lucky that it didn't go on us while we were driving through the desert sun. Once again Collin and the crew at CLN Motors in Glasgow came to our rescue and did all of our work at way more than a fair price. http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e... All the people at the shop have been incredibly friendly and wished us the best on this journey we're about to make. It was quite interesting to me to be able to see our engine get taken completely apart, and then put back together again. I also now know what a head gasket looks like! In addition to this we found the leak in the cooling system, and all systems are go for the good car Enterprise. http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e... http://media.lawrence.com/img/blogs/e...
After picking up the car this afternoon we decided to take a nice long drive in it to make sure everything was in working order, and it appears that we'll be good. Now that we've replaced nearly every part of the engine, with a bit of luck we should make it to Mongolia without any major car troubles...at least any that we can't fix ourselves. We had another lovely visit with the relatives this evening, and after doing a photo shoot out front of their house we made a drive up to the beautiful Loch Lomond. It was stunning to see the green mountain sides dipping down to the water, as a thick mist began spreading itself along the surface. We hopped out of the car to re-strap our bags on the roof rack (we loaded up the car with all the extra weight to do a double check on the car), and we had the pleasure of a Scottish Midgie attack. Brutal. All three of us (Tasman included) made a large racket, and I still feel like I'm getting the occasional bite. I fear that my massive bush of hair is harbouring these awful creatures so that they can enjoy a late night snack. I also fear that the last sentence is certainly not going to help me with the ladies. We're uploading pictures right now, and in the next couple days we should have a link to our pictures on the website (www.teamflatlanders.com). It's time for a brief sleep, and we'll get back to you when we hit the mainland. Stay tuned dear readers.
