How the Brits will celebrate Guy Fawkes /Bonfire Night

Image

Bonfire Night is held in Britain on 5th November. It was on that day in 1605, the Brits have long memories, that the wicked Guy Fawkes placed twenty barrels of gunpowder in the cellar under the Houses of Parliament. Fawkes was a Roman Catholic who was angry because he believed that King James, the son the of the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots should have more toleration of Catholics.

There was a group involved in this plot though only Fawkes is remembered. Robert Catesby invited others to join the conspiracy and one of them, Francis Tresham wrote his brother-in-law, Lord Monteage that it might be best to stay away from Parliament for the evening. Dumb and dumber. Somehow word got to the authorities about the plot, duh,

In 1606 Parliament agreed to make 5th November a day of public thanksgiving and ever since then the day has been celebrated with fireworks and bonfires.

Guy Fawkes Day Poem
Traditional British

Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot ;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'Twas his intent.
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below.
Poor old England to overthrow.
By God's providence he was catch'd,
With a dark lantern and burning match

Holloa boys, Holloa boys, let the bells ring
Holloa boys, Holloa boys, God save the King!

Hip hip Hoorah !
Hip hip Hoorah !

A penny loaf to feed ol'Pope,
A farthing cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down,
A faggot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar,'
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head,
Then we'll say: ol'Pope is dead.

I have given you a traditional Bonfire Night recipe if you care to celebrate along with our cousins across the pond.

Bonfire Bangers
1 lb. (450g) cocktail sausages
2 oz. (50g) cheddar cheese, grated
2 x 15 oz. (440g) cans baked beans
2 lb. (900g) potatoes, peeled and sliced
2 oz. (50g) butter
salt and pepper

Pre-heat oven to 375F, Gas No 5, 190C.

Put the cocktail sausages in a baking tin and cook in the pre-heated oven for about 20 minutes, or until browned.
Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, drain and mash with butter.
Mix the cheese into the potatoes and season to taste with salt and pepper.
Heat the beans in a saucepan and add all but 8 of the cocktail sausages.
Transfer the beans and sausage from the pan into a serving dish, cover with the mashed potato mixture, and press the remaining sausages half way into the top of the potato mixture.

Place the dish under a grill until the potato topping is lightly browned.
