How my heart grew three sizes, just in time for Christmas

I’ve been fairly jaded by Christmas music in recent years. It seems that every Tom, Dick and Harry with a record deal was putting out the obligatory Christmas record in a manner that reminds me of the opening scenes of “Love Actually.” It was sickening.

Long gone were the magical days of A Carpenters Christmas, and cooky Christmas performances.

This year I was having an especially hard time getting in the Christmas spirit. Everywhere I went, people elbowed each other to get to the checkout line, and a lack of funds seemed especially high with many disgruntled shoppers this year.

On top of that, I’ve got an oncoming winter storm to deal with, as I wrestle my way through the snow to make it to two small towns in the middle of nowhere, Kansas.

Needless to say, I have not been very amused this Christmas season. And just as I finally posted a “Bah Humbug!” to my facebook status, I came across this clip, and my heart grew three sizes:

I don’t know what specifically about this clip made me stop in my tracks and melt. I’m not a Jimmy Fallon fan, never have been. Maybe it’s the fact that I love The Roots. Or maybe it’s the harmonious picture of health in the clip. Horatio Sanz is now half his size, and has successfully kept the weight off for a while now. I did some reading and found out his secret: he stopped drinking. Also, Julian Casablancas is recently sober. But look how much fun (don’t you miss FUN?!) they’re all having on stage, recycling a song from what I call “the dark ages of SNL” and turning it into a beautiful masterpiece.

Maybe it’s all these things combined, or maybe it’s a song that just hits my ear right. Whatever the case, Merry Christmas, and may this song get stuck in your head, as it did with me. It’s got me feeling good right through the new year.

(hat tip to Aaron for bring this clip to my attention)
