Larryville's Conservative, Boring Sister
Okay, so I am reading my hometown's newpaper website, The Salina Journal online (http://www.saljournal.com/) and I noticed that our Chamber of Commerce has paid for Ms. I-Can-See-Alaska-From-My-Backyard to speak here in February. Not only that, but check out the list of names of former speakers... I must admit that I agree with my boyfriend when he termed Salina as being "the conservative, boring sister of Lawrence" (although I am sure some people would prefer Salina's atmosphere to Lawrence's just for the Republican'ness alone).
http://www.salina.com/news/Story/chamber-speaker
"On Monday afternoon, the chamber announced that former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin will be the guest speaker at its annual banquet Feb. 5.
Past guest speakers have included former President George H.W. Bush, former First Lady Barbara Bush, New York City Mayor and presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former British Prime Minister John Major and former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft."

I would think that having to listen to that accent (oh boy, you betcha, geeze) would be more worthy of a Fear Factor stunt . Joe Rogan would jump out and say “man, I don't know how you did it, but you just won $50,000”

I sang the national anthem for the event the year Colin Powel was there. He was interesting enough to listen to but the rest of the event was less than stellar…Palin should be interesting as well…if you sneak in a six pack and play drinking games to her speech!
Also, my parents are super excited about the new Jimmy John's there….way to go, S-Town!

and the idea of drinking games during her speech is very appealing. in fact, it would be the only way i could soldier through it all.

My question is, where is Salina getting the money to bring her? Her fee, apparently, is 100K (this is what she is charging a conservative group in Iowa, apparently). Are they using stimulus money? an anonymous benefactor? $100 apiece tix?

If Mrs. Palin is so terribly irrelevant, why does she generate so much interest? Why do her speaking engagements draw thousands when a sitting vice-President can only draw a few hundred? How on Earth can some one so supposedly worthless write a book that's a best-seller before it goes on sale? If it's so painfully obvious she is a washed-up has been in American politics, why does the democratic party and the liberal media devote so much attention to her? Do they know something we don't? Could it be she scares the left? What else explains all their vitriol towards her?
Methinks thou dost protest too much.

paris hilton had an album that sold really well too but that doesn't make her mariah carey.

$75 for chamber members. $50 non-members…if tickets are available after chamber members purchase theirs. Not sure how many ticket are for sale. Moving to Lawrence from Salina may have changed me from a Wildcat fan to a Jayhawk fan, but it'll never change me from a Republican to a Democrat. I also might mention the Lied Center on the KU campus was packed for the Dole's and the elder Bush's visits. Maybe I'm not as alone as I think I am over here.

Hmmm … I thought our wonderful Lawrence liberals were the paragons of open-mindedness, diversity, and free speech . . .
God forbid someone invite a speaker with different values than your own. I know, let's call them names and try to diminish them! That will show how open-minded and progressive we are!

Oh Tom, you are such leach on society.
You post all this BS but you are really just part of the problem. Not once, whether you call your right-thinker, nancyboy, or just your own name have you ever offered a solution to any issue you have ever posted on. Sure, all the other neo-nazis like consumer1 might agree with your silly little comments, but no normal person could ever take any of your nonsense seriously.
Just once it would be nice to see you say that something is going right and that you are pleased with something. Not you, it could be story about parking spaces and somehow you would find away to blame Obama or liberals. It gets old. I realize I am on the other side. But, I think this fighting between liberals and conservatives is destroying this nation. I also realize I am talking to rock and that you are not going to change your ways. Hence, you are part of the problem and leach on this country by not working to find solutions. That is the bitter truth..
As for Palin, I think she falls into this unworkable position. Like old Tom, she is part of the problem and not really offering any solutions. She would rather string up a liberal voter then try to find a common ground. But, the good news is the moderates – the ones who break the tie — are on to Palin and most in republican party see that so I doubt she is serious player anymore……

I don't think “conservative imports” from other areas account for the success of the Dole lecture series in “lib'rul” Lawrence; both former Pres. George H.W. Bush and Sen. Robert Dole have brains and integrity.
I'd give Paris Hilton more credit in both departments than I would give Sarah Palin.

my mom was given tickets to the COC dinner when daddy bush spoke and she said his opening line was “i'm not going to talk about politics tonight, i'm just going to talk about my time growing up on the ranch”. she then said he gave a good speech that was also very humorous and she enjoyed it thoroughly. ms. palin on the other hand— you would've thought my mom smelled a pile of dog poo when i mentioned it to her. LOL
the thing about girlfriend is she seems to be of the same kind of celebrity that some people were accusing obama of being a couple of years ago… that infamous commercial that was aired in different parts of the country which likened him to paris hilton: famous just because he's famous. ms. palin (now correct me if i'm wrong because i am writing this from memory and not googling to try and facts-check) went from being on the school board to mayor of a town about the size of junction city. and then governor. she is a former beauty queen who is still a very nice looking woman who comes from this quirky family where they shoot large mammals for the fun of it, called her husband “the first dude” and name their kids really strange names. THAT is her reason for being a celebrity. what the hell does she stand for anyway— does anyone know w/out googling past articles or going on youtube and trying to access some former speeches? its one of those things where people align themselves w/ her just because.
i don't think she's a doofus though, she's crazy like a fox. if i could command the amount of cheddar she does for a speech i definitely would… i am not a fan nor am i a supporter, but i sure ain't mad at her either. i just wish the salina COC would switch it up and get someone besides either a conservative republican or a sports star as the keynote speaker… how about al gore? that'll never happen….
