A new report from the Surgeon General has found that 90 percent of smokers try their first cigarette by age 18. Ninety-nine percent of smokers start by age 26.

The Kansas University Student Senate will host a public forum Wednesday regarding the Tobacco Free KU initiative.

The forum will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union, prior to the 6:30 p.m. Student Senate meeting. KU human resources director Ola Faucher will present information on the initiative and take questions.

As its name implies, the Tobacco Free KU initiative endeavors to ban all forms of tobacco from campus (currently you can smoke on campus, but not in or near buildings — that goes for e-cigs, too). Tobacco Free KU’s target implementation date has been pushed back a couple of years, but is now July 2017, according to the last report I did, in December.

In the meantime, advocates are trying to get the word out and drum up support for the initiative before university administration actually approves a firm policy and puts it into effect.
