Border War just not good enough to make top rivalry list

Sure, great rivalries are what make sports worth watching. The hottest rivalries bring to mind the year-long ribbing, the eagerness that comes before the face off in a square-jawed, bare-knuckled brawl. And that’s just in the stands after the half-time beer rush.Great rivalries go beyond the sport and tend to dictate more of a lifestyle. Think Yankees vs. Red Sox.Think Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens (for the three other hockey fans out there).Think Michigan vs. Ohio State.Think Kansas vs. Mizzou.Wait… No?According to the Newsweek Kaplan College Guide 2009’s Top 12 College Rivalries all the Muck Fizzou and Chickenhawk chants in the world don’t amount to a Guilford vs. Oberlin in this crazy world.Sure, Michigan and Ohio State are on there. Indiana vs. Purdue. Boston College vs. Notre Dame.NYU Tisch vs. USC Film School? Sure, why not.The list – released online over the weekend, in Newweek’s Aug. 18 print edition – documents rivalries in everything from historically black colleges (Howard vs. Moreouse and Spelman) to “Cinematic Enclaves.” (Hence the Tisch/USC feud). And in case you were wondering, the Guilford vs. Oberlin rivalry is listed as the “social activists” rivalry.Sorry, Border War. Maybe next year.
