Saturday notes: Paul Pierce bounces back; Cole Aldrich sees mop-up minutes

Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce, center is fouled as he shoots between Indiana Pacers guard Paul George, left, and center Jeff Foster in the first half of an NBA basketball game in Indianapolis, Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012.

Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics) bounced back from a dismal 8 for 34 shooting slump and scored 21 points on Saturday, but the Celtics lost their fourth game in a row — this time to the Indiana Pacers, 97-83. Pierce attempted the same number of shots as he did on Friday night (12) but he hit two more and went to the line twice as many times (10), making nine freebies. He added three rebounds, three assists (including this no-look pass) and a block. Pierce also turned the ball over six times in 35 minutes against the Pacers (full stats here).

Brandon Rush (Golden State Warriors) scored seven points with four rebounds, a steal and a block as the Warriors were “embarrassed,” 112-100, by the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday. Rush only made one of his shots (a three-pointer) but added four points in six attempts at the free-throw line. He played 25 minutes without a single foul or turnover (full stats here). According to Warriors blogger Adam Lauridsen, Rush was one of just a few Golden State players who helped make the game competitive — the Bobcats were ahead 38-25 after the first quarter, and questionable Warriors defense throughout the game was to blame.

• In his second game as his team’s backup point guard, Josh Selby (Memphis Grizzlies) went scoreless and committed three turnovers in six minutes on Saturday, but the Grizzlies defeated the New Orleans Hornets, 108-99 (full stats here). Selby’s playing time was spread out over bits of all four quarters, and each of his turnovers came in a different quarter. Starting point guard Mike Conley played 41 minutes, and former backup Jeremy Pargo stayed on the bench when Selby came out of the game.

Nick Collison (Oklahoma City Thunder) made his only shot attempt for two points in 15 minutes during Oklahoma City’s dismantling of the New York Knicks on Saturday. The Thunder defeated the Knicks, 104-92, but the score didn’t do the beatdown justice — OKC finished the first half up 70 to 47 and led by 31 points at one point in the third quarter. Collison added two rebounds, an assist and a block in a game where the Thunder didn’t need him to play his normal complement of minutes (full stats here).

Cole Aldrich (Oklahoma City Thunder) saw seven minutes of fourth-quarter run against the New York Knicks in a huge Thunder victory on Saturday. Aldrich scored five points (off of a hook shot and three free throws) to go along with a rebound, a steal and a block. He was also whistled twice for fouls and once for goaltending in those seven minutes (full stats here).
